Sheaf (6 Viewers)

It's a shame we didn't sign Alan Browne on a free, I feel he would have been ideal if Sheaf went.
However, I don't believe we could/would have matched Sunderland in wages terms unfortunately.

Sheaf leaving has always felt like it could be on the cards - I would hope for at least 20M though - I'd be a little bit disappointed with 15M given some of the prices flying around for English talent this summer.

I'm not at all against selling him though and I think anyone rational knows there are some offers that will need to be entertained especially when they come from a Premiership team.

I would hope given our sophistication now that we have multiple reinforcements lined up behind such a deal and won't let this happen without those deals agreed and ready to go.

Im assuming the club know a prem club is about too or have said they will reach a valuation the club set. We will have potential replacements and will have others lined up to add depth in different positions.

Its just the nature of the business and although i like Sheaf we are getting maximum value for him on our terms. We don't get bullied anymore in the market and are getting very good value on previous investments. We still have players to add experienced CB, athletic LB and a mobile no 6 are 3 positions we can add quality depth and Sheaf may trigger those moves.

I do think Gus and Vik not moving earlier have effected our dealings but i still like what im seeing from the club. Its definitely on a path to success and its been said what the goal is, the key to this model is the recruiting and so far we don't look weaker for losing some very good players.

Don't really see a problem here, if the interest is true then we hold all the cards anyway. I'd trust the club to ensure we get the right price for him, if he has to go - hopefully 20 mil+. In which case, another incredible bit of business by the club, and new exciting opportunity to bring some fresh faces in.

I do think the fact it's 5 days until our first game and we haven't announced who is captain yet is probably an indicator that Sheaf is likely to leave unfortunately.

That's the exact reason

Robins is keen to make Sheaf captain and offer him a hugely improved contract.

Sheaf happy with this but of course wants to play premier league football, and with Palace sniffing around this is why its not in place yet

Nothing more than that at the moment though it's not to say he will deffo be off, just that Palace have a much firmer interest than the likes of Ipswich, and strangely, Brentford

Na not at all. Apologies if anyones taken it that way. If it was all but done I'd have made a thread having a breakdown, he's my favourite player..

Just that Palace have made it clear IF they are to launch a bid for him it will be at the price we want and Sheaf has seen the impressive development of Wharton at the same club.

Brentford and Ipswich were also sniffing, Ipswich Sheaf won't go, Brentford he would but they won't offer the asking price.

Hence Palace is the danger for us, he would.be happy to go, and they would be happy to pay (£16m with some add ons evidently)

This has been brought about by the no movement on Vik and Gus. The pot is now dry for us, and 10 days ago when Sporting paid the installment we were all set to be rolling in it

Now people seem to be umming and ahhhing around Vik, if we want to add the 2 CM, RB and CB, Sheaf will.be sacrificed

THey are totally different players
They are both Central midfielders, 'box to box'

Browne has played attacking midfield, sure, but more recent seasons for PNE had played more CDefensive midfield/CM.
So not 'totally different player's'.

Anyhow, it's all pie in the sky as he's not our player 😔

Can't see anyone spending £20m on Sheaf. £10m maybe. If Doug gets anywhere over £10m he'd be doing unbelievably well. Can see Palace looking at him though as fabulous on the ball but Sheaf aint the quickest. He could be tempted to stay given the improving team and chance for a shot of PL with us.... but money talks.

He was more so last season after Gus left, definitely made to play further forward by MR in some games at least.

Anyway, we need a goal scoring CM is more my point and sheaf isn't that player.
Perhaps Torp could step up this season?
I still feel Browne would have been ideal for CM.

Id say its less about money for Sheaf and more the level he plays at.

My obscure stats based recommendations to replace him would be:

Adama Camara - Paris FC - 27
Himad Abdelli - Angers - 24
Dave Van Den Berg - Zwolle - 24
Morlaye Sylla - Arouca - 26
Aimen Moueffek- St Etienne - 23
Hugo Vetlesen - Brugge - 24

We would have the funds to get 2

Depends how much we get for him surely? Most people on here were saying that we need another CM before the rumoured talk about Sheaf maybe leaving, so that means if Sheaf does in fact leave then we’d need 2 CMs in the eye’s of most people on here? (Me included.)

Vik will go, I’m certain of it. As will Hamer.
Hope you are right. More concerned about the latter (in that it will adversely affect Sheff Utd). Vik will go now, or next season - money on it's way regardless.

Yes would agree there. Really far from ideal as Sheaf knows the system and is proven quality but if the club really want to go for it this season his sale would fill all the remaining gaps.

Might not do us much good if it happens late
There’s FFP to consider and of course Jan/next summer.

Whilst there’s a lot of podcasters/YouTubers that fancy us to push automatics, I just don’t think we’ll be ready for that this season. There’s still gaps in the depth we have and positions that can be improved.

We’ll see just where Eccles (and Torp) is at this season, he’s had the benefit of playing with Hamer and Sheaf. He needs to go up another gear to replace Sheaf.

That tweet from the Peterborough chairman saying Doug to come back next year or whatever... Wonder if that's related then in some way?

I rate Sheaf, but for £15mill+ and we spend at least £10mill on 2 x cm, it's the business model we have signed up to and need to stick with if we have aspirations of long term improvement and success.

There’s no way we’re anywhere near ffp/par trouble.

In Lisbon today. Been up to the Sporting Stadium.
Chatting to a few staff.
Kids were in City gear. The staff said Vik is the best player they have seen at Sporting.
At their end, after the season just gone, they can't believe they got him for 20m. They were clued up about the add ins too.
They have a song that mentions them "pimping Coventry" for him too!!
They (yes, they are just stadium staff - I know) seem to think he is staying, even when I mentioned Arsenal/Liverpool. They said they are doing everything they can to keep him!!
