I don't know about this. He has made public his release clause. Someone in a panic on the final day needs to bring someone in and has £16m burning a hole in his pocket. Who else are you getting for that? It's a nice quick deal.
Hamer has a relegation release clause in his contract, but surely his price would be a lot more than £16m now?

The other interested clubs won't meet it at the moment and happy to sit it out until next summer and get him cheaper. Palace may choose to do that, you never know

You do know players have friends within Coventry don't you? It's not always some big conspiracy leak from the fucking tea lady
If players gossip freely to their friends about stuff, it will rapidly be common knowledge anyway. But you give the impression that you are cultivating a specific ‘source’ for inside information you can post, and which the club might want to keep under wraps. There’s a difference, and apologies if it’s only the former.

There’s no way we’re anywhere near ffp/par trouble.
No, but it’s a 3 year cycle so who knows what that picture looks like from now. It’s why Hull have been in a bit of trouble because their profitable season from 4 seasons (or so) is out of the reporting range.

It’s a constraint we need to be aware of so when people say we need several more signings, it may not be possible this season.

Palace is on the cards. They want him.
Makes sense, they missed on Gyokeres and there’s been plenty of Championship players able to make the step up as Palace learned with Wharton.

It’s a good move for him, I understand why, for example, Vik didn’t fancy his Prem options last season.

Would be gutted if he went, I’m a massive fan of Sheaf and have been since the early days. He’s also a professional off the pitch and at this point one of the ‘old guard’ considering the amount of change at the club. He’s a big figure to lose on and off the pitch.

£20 million though is potentially game changing money and softens the blow, as long as we have replacements ready to go, else it’s potentially another slow start to the season.

I really, really hope he stays and leads us to the Premier League.

Bit dramatic 😂

The club will have a contingency plan for replacing players
Of course, but our midfield is considerably weaker without him, I don’t see a new signing hitting the ground running that quickly.

This season is one we should really push for I think, next summer we’re likely to see a few big departures if we don’t go up (Simms, MVE, Wright etc)

He hasn't figured in many preseason games though and we've looked fine without him .

easy to say its an over the top reaction, the season starts in 5 days, no way we get a replacement in and ready for that.

look what happened when we lost Hamer at last minute.... 3 wins in our first 16 games and autos/playoffs effectively gone

not saying it will happen but a huge risk to let him walk (especially when he has 2 years left!)

It's a totally different scenario. Hamer was one of 2-3 players we totally relied on .
We 've got Rudoni ,Torp,Eccles , Allen and Palmer centrally and that's before we replace Sheaf.

I don't want him to go by the way

Could we accept a bit less on the bid agree to release him in Jan but use the agreed fee to get a replacement in now with the view of getting them upto speed by Jan when sheaf leaves
If we are in the top two come January there’s no way we would let sheaf leave, we would be shooting our selves in the foot.

fine doesn't get you automatic promotion.
fine doesn't even get you anywhere near the playoffs. not in this league.

we're either serious about doing it this year, or we sell our best players less than a week before the start of the season.
but we can't do both.

Agree somewhat, I think if we’re serious about going up this season, and this is the season to push, then we don’t sell Sheaf. Add one more midfielder to the fold to play with him and Rudoni and we are one hell of a force in this league.

Bollocks. We either go in 2-3 short with Sheaf or without Sheaf but the ability to flesh out the squad with quality. The idea it’ll derail our season is nonsense. We’re so much more than we were a year ago.

I think last season shown we wont spend the money for the sake of it, its possible we wont get a Sheaf replacement or any other positions we require if he is sold late on in the window

But he’s not playing now. We have Torp Rudoni and Eccles and are already down the road scouting others. In reality we’d be buying two and maybe get one at worst and having Rudoni a new guy and Torp/Eccles/Allen/Palmer is fine. I get the impression we were looking to be ready to go if the Vik money came in and this would surely just move the timelines up.

Much better to replace with a loan than panic and commit ourselves to four years of the wrong signing. Pragmaticism is needed.

I'm sure Doug won't let Sheaf leave unless a replacement has been brought in first.

And Sheaf definitely won't leave unless it means the squad is improved in a number of areas, maybe a new CM, CH, and LWB.

In any case, Sheaf is on a long term contract, so he's going nowhere unless it suits us.

I'm really torn on this.

On the one hand I think letting one of our best midfielders go days before the season starts is suicide.

On the other, he does seem to be out a few times a season, his value is at its maximum right now, and will allow us to strengthen in 2-3 areas.

Whichever way Douglas goes its a roll of the dice.

Agreed, their defence was the best in the league last year

You'd better go and tell Mikel Arteta and his management team quickly then. I bet they wish they had your insight into their squad that they work with every day.

Didn't Havertz score more goals than anyone in the second half if last season in the PL? I think I heard that but I might be wrong. Anyway these days it seems you can make things up and it becomes true like loan fees for example.
