Rats in garden (1 Viewer)

I’ve seen a few rats in the garden during the day over the last couple of weeks and neighbours in the area have been saying the same for some time.

I’ve read some tips online about keeping the garden clean and free of debris etc. Our garden is fairly tidy but there were some brambles over hanging the fence from a neighbours and I saw rats eating blackberries from them, so I have cut these back.

Anyone had similar issue and got any advice?

had an issue a few years back and posted on here... some of the replies were spicy!

Tried loads of stuff but in the end had to call in the council pest control. sorted the issue now though

Best/only bet really is to get professional pest control in.

I also had them under my shed once and tried a few baits and stuff you can get online but they didn't work

I should add, I had a look at the council website over the weekend and it’s a 6 week wait currently. Also, we have two terriers who are yet to catch one or seemingly even deter them.

If they are not nesting on your property not a lot you can do. But the nest will be close by as they don't travel far. If you remove food sources then maybe they'll bother someone else.

Still got rats at the Coventry house

Luckily, my missus got them as part of the divorce settlement, along with the house.

You bought them from a pet shop and released them, we know the truth Otis. You probably should have taken their cute little collars off first though... 😄

How dare you!!

I think you will find that Jack, Scruffy, Nibbler, Bob and Gnawy, were street rats that just followed me home one day.

Not my fault I had a hole in my pocket and some Dairylea Triangles that must have fallen out as I was walking.

Rats like any other mammals will only come if there is shelter and food.
Remove and clear any possible nesting places and ensure no variety of food available, keep bins shut, no wild bird food accessible, no left out pet food etc
Check drains and sewer links to ensure of no nearby collapses.

This. It'll include any standing structure in the garden, garden waste piles/compost bins, shady area under fences and bushy plants/shrubs that'll stop rain getting into a nest (as well as predators).

I have two young female cats who are prolific hunters, and are doing a fantastic job of keeping the rat problem under control in our cul-de-sac. Either a terrier-type dog, or a young cat, your problem will be solved. 👍🏻

I do actually like rats, as pets, they’re incredibly intelligent and hilarious to watch at times. Not everyone’s cup of tea though, granted.
