Football doesn't belong in the Olympics but it's lame that we can't sort a team out.

Lots of negativity from Welsh and Scottish fans. Can someone explain to me why? Genuinely interested as to the reasons.

Seems weird as there is already the Lions team in Rugby and all the other Olympic sports.

Seems a good opportunity to get some tournament experience to young players. As long as there is a good mix from the nations what's the problem?

Not fussed personally,I think having Golf and Tennis in the Olympics is daft as well tbh when they have multiple tournaments all over the world all year round.

I get that it doesn't really fit in the Olympics but the women's comp has tradition. Also quite enjoyed the men's final.

Either way regardless of if the tournament is valid, why do the Welsh and Scottish seem so against a GB football team specifically

I think because it would be heavily biased to England, but really odd as most cheer on all GB athletes in the Olympics.

Would be quite easy to make sure there are a decent number of representatives from each nation. It's u23s + 3 over age players.

Really cannot even begin to get myself interested in the notion of a GB team.

Zero interest to me and I think the rivalry between the home nations is such that I can't see much enthusiasm for it really.

City and England for me.

Other GB stuff in the Olympics, then fine, but football is a different kettle of fish entirely and like I say, there is such rivalry at play

Why is it any different than the Rugby? Worked ok in 2012

Doesn't that defeat the object of the Olympics though? And however unlikely, I'd get behind it if it was 11 Scots or 11 Welsh as they're representing GB. You wouldn't have someone lower ranked in Tennis simply because Amdy Murray is Scottish so the same applies.

Tbf Rob I reckon for international football in general we should combine the England & Scotland team... easy to find the correct name for them, simply take "Land" from England & "Scot" from Scotland...job done 👍

There have in the past been some concerns from the Scottish and Welsh FAs that it would just be a glorified England team. However-if you ensured that the team would have equal selection from the 4 nations then there couldn’t be much complaint.

The qualification is the getting to the semis of the U21 tournament isn’t it? Surely it should be a majority England U21s if they make it there.

don’t recall the last time the other home nations made the tournament let alone the latter stages

There would be complaint because the team would be shit

The only non-English player who gets in the squad on merit is Andy Robertson.

Kieran Tierney as well. If a properly GB team is too shit to enter then really it isn’t going to happen

Neco Williams and Brennan Johnson maybe for Wales?
Pickings are a bit slim for either country though really compared to the quality England would add

The big problem with the football is that it's one of the few (only?) sports in the Olympics where the big stars are nowhere to be seen, the closest is a handful of overage players that probably wouldn't start for the senior team. Instead of U23s go the complete other way and bring back indoor masters football, get Ronaldinho and the lads back in the mix.

A team for the Paris Olympics would probably been from this lot plus the 3 older

There is enough pointless football already don’t forget we get the excitement of the expanded club World Cup next summer just to make sure the top players get no rest and then you get poor quality tournaments like the one that has just gone.

Rugby is completely different in terms of rivalry within the game.

Like I say, football is completely different.

Anyway, each and every to their own, but I really wouldn't be interested at all.

I think its a useful chance to give young players tournament experience, Spain took it seriously and will see the benefits down the line.

I don't actually think fans will give a shit really but I had fun at the games at the Ricoh. Also the too much football argument doesn't really apply as its basically a youth tournament.

Interestingly, there has been talk over the years of a side representing Great Britain.and finding ways to do it (in the past it has been a no no due to the individual associations and if they merge it has to be recognised and continue UEFA or something like that!?)
I was/could have been involved in one possibility!!!

In my University days I was lucky enough to play for England and also British Universities mens football teams. (Late 90s/early 2000s)

We were at a training camp at Lilleshall and there was actually a meeting taking place with British Olympic reps and those from BUSA.

Standard was obviously an issue but British football sides had gone to World University games at the time and competed with the likes of Mexico and Korea who fielded pretty much their Olympic sides in the World games hence it being talked about at the time.

There was already a "British" association and structure in place at that level that would not have impacted the FA/SFA/FAW.

Didn't really get much further I believe though, again, due to standard!

Change the qualifying criteria or just ignore them,or include them?
