Great ball from Palmer, basically told Simms where to run and that was essentially the difference tonight. Good finish from Simms too.

I maintain Palmer is the best passer of the ball in attacking areas that we have. Weight of pass is almost always perfect
50% of the time you are correct about Palmers passing. The other 50% he gives the ball away.

Are the odds that high? He started quite, well first touch was poor but he battled to win it back then seemed to think fuck it ive done enough and disappear for an hour

I mean, I’m going on like I’m his agent now so I will stop now but have to correct made up stats posted as facts. 81% pass success rate.

Wilson MOTM for me. Was great, particularly in the first half.

Defence was pretty solid and I thought Dasilva had a good game. Torp was excellent too.

Only disappointment was Tavares who couldn't beat an egg nevernind his defender. Lightweight.

Quite a few empty seats around us so some did buy for the points.

Oh no, not stats. What we’re talking about is key passes. The ones where we have promising forward situations when he tries the ridiculous rather than the simple. A prime example last night when we broke and Sakamoto was completely free but Palmer tried to thread the needle to Simms. Attack over. Of course he can roll a five yard pass to someone hence the stats. It’s his key decision making that is the issue.

Palmer isn't the best passer in the squad but he sees, and sometimes makes, passes that no one else in the squad can.

Of course those kind of high risk passes have a low completion rate.

Kevin de Bruyne has one of the lowest pass completion rates in the Premier League. And no, before anyone says it, I'm not comparing Palmer to de Bruyne ffs.

de Bruyne is far better than Palmer.

Wilson did well. Thought Kitching was superb. Dasilva did well.

Torp, Eccles and Rudoni has to be the three on Friday. Miles above Allen.

BTA was very poor first half but showed some good movement to make a couple of chances second. He’s certainly an upgrade on Godden.

Agree with all of that but wouldn't be surprised to see him go with Allen over Torp.

Can't see them starting after playing 90 last night but Kitching and Dasilva did their chances no harm whatsoever.

Been saying this for ages. He doesn’t have the ability to play in the Championship and needs to drop down to League 2 to start playing regularly.
Don't want to hammer him but he is the type of player we bring on when we are winning, he hasn't really shown that he is the player to come on and change a game since he scored 'that goal' he is a fringe player at best and at his age now he's not a kid either so wouldn't be surprised to see him out on loan or let go

Wilson 7
Latibeudiere 6 (much better at CB)
Thomas 5
Kitching 8 motm
Da Silva 7
Eccles 6
Torp 6
Palmer 6.5
Tavares 5
Thomas-Asante 7
Wright 6

Van Erwijk 7
Allen 6.5
Rudoni 7.5
Sakamoto 6.5
Simms 7.5

That's about right I think. Torp was a lot better tonight, but was still only ok. Asante worked hard all match and looks a good signing as he gives us a range of options through his versatility.

This is correct.

Last season he was finding Simms and wrights runs more than anyone else.

I struggle to understand the hate for Palmer from some. He is what he is, if you want energy and simple passing you've got the likes of Allen 🤣

Ben Wilson will never set the world alight but then again does not make too many costly errors. I know it’s damming with faint praise but he is a No2. With his persona around the squad I would keep him over BC on that basis.

To be fair, at the level we are now and the next level we aspire to be - it isn't unreasonable to want a player who can find your forwards and have energy and mobility.

I do like elements of Palmer, but last night was an A Typical display. Great assist, but then enormously frustrating periods of losing the ball in basic areas.

He's good enough as a squad player in a promotion team as he offers a completely different skillset.

I remember him turning the wrong way in his own half and losing it last night but you will get that with the way he plays. He's rarely keeping it simple.

It was a good ball not a great ball. It was a little over hit and in front of Simms who had to stretch and did well to control it.

The weight of his through ball passes is almost never perfect. Which is why we don't score from many from them in comparison to the number his tries.

He's a decent squad player, but isn't good enough to push us to autos as a starter.

The desperation to put down Palmer gets more and more bizarre. I find him as frustrating as anyone and wish he would get basics done more, but people trying to make out the assist was overhit, or simms did all the work for it etc etc is just really weird.

Not hate
Hugely frustrating when he loses the ball so cheaply in really dangerous positions

I’m not sure he’s anything to be totally honest. Would honestly be surprised if he’s still a professional in a few years. Above anything from a technical point of view he’s so unbelievably slight and lightweight for a footballer
Surprised that while recovering from his achilles injury his training programme didn't include a lot of creatine and weights. If he wants to compete physically at a professional level he can't carry on being 8 stone dripping wet.

Not saying he needs to become like the Hulk but he needs to be able to be able to fend off challenges and not get pushed off the ball.

Not discrediting Simms… I just mean it would’ve been so easy to play that pass into feet (by which time the defender closes down).
Simms wanted it feet, would have been a back foot touch into space then for the shot. The defenders wouldn't have got there.

Actually I thought the pass last night for goal was overhit and Simms did brilliantly off balance with a very decent first touch to create chance for a shot. Palmer has clear talent but needs to tone down theatrics a tadge.

Which is fine if that was the only option, but often he either turns down or doesn't see a much easier progressive pass in order to keep the ball and, at times, seems to be waiting to deliberately try that Hollywood ball that has a cat in hell's chance of coming off, almost because it will look great the one time in ten it comes off.

It's choosing flair over efficiency, and can only be classed as poor decision making.

It was over hit.

Simms was stood square on rather than looking to run on, hence he was slow to react to it. The difference is the ball Palmer played is down on the history books as an assist for a goal, because he encouraged the forward into the space past the defender where he had a clear shot on goal.

If you think the coaches ask it to be played flat to a striker who then has to figure out how to beat defender to get space for a shot, rather than play it into the space where striker can run through clear, then I don't know what to tell you.

Thought it was good by both
Defender not so much

As I said earlier, it looks as though Simms wants it to feet, a backfoot right foot touch forward into space, to get the shot of next touch. He's in space, you only need half a yard.

He's holding his run to stay onside.

I said it was a good ball, just not a great ball.

Agreed, the defender lost sight of simms and gave the room for the ball to be played in. Again another reason the ball was the right choice as if it was played to feet the defender has time to square up and block route to the goal.

that's what happens when players try progressive passing

same thing happens to bruno only he has players making better runs for him

As I said earlier, it looks as though Simms wants it to feet, an outside right foot touch forward into space, to get the shot of next touch. He's in space, you only need half a yard.

but if he plays it too his feet he's outside the area with a defender still in front of him

He's really not. His touch would have taken him to about where he a had the shot. Anyway. A big backfoot touch into space.

He's done incredibly well just to get his foot on the end to control it. If he misses it, everyone would have said Palmer (slightly) over hit it. A good ball not a great one.
