Was Roland Nilsson our best ever Right Back ? (5 Viewers)

I didn’t see Thomas play but did meet him after a game in a restaurant once and he was very nice.

Nillson was better than Borrows (who was one of the worst crossers of ball that I have ever seen).

David Phillips would have been a brilliant modern type full back.
Respectfully disagree on Borrows v Nilsson, but I think that’s a great point about Phillips. He did actually play there a few times, most notably of course the Cup Final

It’s Roland Nilsson for me. Such a calm and assured player who rarely put a foot wrong. I tend to think of him as the Beckenbauer of right backs.

He was such a nice and humble man as well. I once had the opportunity of having a good chat with him at a corporate hospitality do and he even called me “Sir” 😆

Brian Borrows (“Mr Consistency”) and Mick Coop were extremely good players as well.

I have to go with Brian Borrows. That’s not to run Nilsson down but Borrows could do it all, he oozed class & could score great goals sometimes too. With a touch more pace, had he been at a “bigger” club, and dare I say it had he have had more ruthless ambition, I think he’d have had a shot at playing for England.

I remember him being well into his 30s v Forest in ‘95 & Collymore was scoring for fun & was full of hype, Borrows played at centre half and never gave Collymore a sniff, he was just class.

Only player I ever saw get the better of him was, randomly enough, Ian Ormondroyd at Villa when they beat us 4-1 in 1990.

He’s my favourite ever City player, could go on for ages about him- but for me he beats Nilsson, also for longevity of course. Let Wednesday have Nilsson, we can have Bugsy 💪

Bugsy also scored an absolute belter against Villa at Villa Park the following season - curled all over the place as if a Brazilian had hit it 👏

My dad would argue not just our best right back but our best ever player!

I've been with my dad when every member of the 87 team has walked past, as well as Vik, Huckerby etc. and he has not batted an eyelid but when Roland turned up at Legends Day the other year he was awestruck - the only time I have ever seen him stop and have a photograph with any footballer past or present
