The one word that would describe our start to the season. Such a clear and painful lack of aggression to our play which means we’re affording the opposition far too much space. I also haven’t noticed a coherent press in any of our games yet. I still believe we have the talent in the squad to be challenging for top 2 but we absolutely need to be more proactive in terms of how we’re playing. It’s all pedestrian currently.

Absolutely they worked hard to close us down and we did the opposite, you have to put the hard work in to win games but for some reason or other we just aren’t doing it at the moment.

The last 20 mins we weren't passive. When it got feisty a few tasty tackles went in, Wright was ready for a fight etc.

It still wasn't great but it felt at least like we were involved at the game at that point. Not just standing around watching the game happen.

Why can't they apply themselves like that for 90 mins?

is it the mindset, or the coaching?

Genuine question, I don’t know the answer - I did however note for the first time today listening to MR’s comments he sounded different, not as confident about his answers, almost as though he didn’t really understand

We looked totally different in pre season, now we seem to have reverted back to last seasons worst bits.

I'll praise us when we play well. Happy clapper like you, buzzing that a 70 million quid squad is playing worse than when we got promoted. Tedious
Who said I'm happy. Just don't feel the need to repeat the fucking obvious. Anyone can see we at minimum need midfield and hopefully defensive reinforcement. Let's see where we are Sept first before pissing the bed.

Really tough game today, great point..They were well organised and closed down the space when we had the ball. 1st half well off the pace, looked shaky and disorganised, rudi seemed to have no confidence in a lightweight Torp and inept Eccles, how many times did he play us into trouble. Lati was decent all game . Wright was bizarre, did not look interested, the chance he missed was criminal. Its blatantly obvious that we need a competent midfielder to play off Rudi , subs proved it as we looked better with Palmer although a sub for me. Sort the midfield out and we will not be far away.

Good points, but how many more multi-million pound signings can we afford?

careful, we don’t need any more aggression and empty violent threats on here tonight…
So you agree with me? But at the same time you're trying to be trendy in not agreeing with me, weird. Just let people voice their thoughts before acting like a hard man on a internet forum.

true to a point though, no need to have a meltdown unless we get past the transfer window with no additions in midfield - although I, amongst many, would probably liked to have hit the ground running rather than a stuttering start and playing catch up, again

Difference between knowing what is needed and constantly bringing up the same points making new threads covering the same ground. Then you act the victim when people point out that there is a week left of the window. What's the point in moaning now. Odd too how you have been on all summer about how shit you think the defence is yet they have actually been pretty solid and not the main issue. Now you pivot to moan about creativity.

Weird getting angry at someone with an opposite opinion. Very strange, I bet you sleep in the 'spare room'
properly weird comeback.

I'd say moaning we need players isn't really nuanced opinion. It's a vague notion that doesn't really need multiple posts. But whatever you keep it up 👍

At one point today Rudoni was screaming at the defence and midfield to move up and press when Bristol had possession but I totally agree with your point

For me the main problem at the moment is when we don't have the ball.

Our press is not man for man and Stoke and Bristol especially always seemed to have a spare man they seem to find with a couple of passes around our front 3 and our midfield and defence then set up in their defensive positions allowing the opposition normally a free run into our half or final 3rd.
All this is meaning we are not winning the ball back high enough up the pitch which then means we have to pass it around the back for ages looking for any glimpse of space through a packed midfield/defence rather than having any opposition players out of their defensive positions if we won the ball back higher up and broke away.

Get the gist of what you’re saying, but going on a full man-to-man press is very risky. That’s why a common strategy is to press to make the opposition play into a space where you have a numerical advantage. We don’t do that at all (I think that was one of Dennis Lawrence’s influences previously), we just run at the ball from wherever. If you watch, we don’t even cut off the passing lanes a lot of the time - you may as well have some traffic cones placed out there.

Well said mate. I think we are all crying out for some passion and aggression to go for the ball, win 50/50 challenges and just basically work hard as a team. It requires everyone to do that, but some are too passive, lacking energy or motivation to do it. That leads to all the disjointed play and lack of cohesion. Even if we lack creativity, working hard and being brave shouldn’t be too much to ask for.

Hopefully mate. We need to learn how to play away from home though.
I think we will, I still think top 2 actually and probably as Champions. Turn Norwich over next week and we’ll be where we need to before the first (fcuking hate them) international break. October is a lovely set of fixtures and when I think we’ll go through the gears.

Under MR our away form always seems to start slowly. If I remember right even in our League 1 winning year we didn't win an away game until December! After New Year however we always seem to win regularly away from home. Is that just a coincidence or is it there something in our set up that directly causes this?

3 games in. Give them a chance. They will sort it out. I agree we are 1 DM midfielder away from being very good.

Last season at this point everyone was laying into Simms. I can't be arsed to dig up the thread. Things will come good.

The first three away games it felt like you were watching a Southgate side. Ultra cautious with the ball going backwards and sideways more often than forwards, and there seemed to be no serious attacking intent. With the attacking talent we have you would hope we would want to start with real intent, on the front foot, and looking to win the game.
Although how their goal was allowed to stand was baffling, as the player on the floor was clearly stopping Dovin, setting his feet. Better 2nd half with a great control and finish for the goal from Palmer. I know he has his critics but in the 3 away games we have only scored twice, and he has scored one and made the other.

Mike Dean on Sky said the goal should not have stood.

I do sometimes question what goes on in training, and of course we shouldn’t be party to what goes on, but I do find it weird that time and time again we either don’t know how to press or how to beat a press, you’ve got to be able to do one or the other and we can’t seem to do either sometimes.

I’m not calling for Robins’ head or anything, I’m just concerned about what goes on in training with the midfield, it doesn’t seem to have progressed in any way over the last few seasons.

Why not just start a game the way we finish it? Surely give it a go? It isn’t painful football but we were second best for 60 minutes of that game. Frustration setting in amongst (Some of) the fans. I prefer getting behind the team rather than call the players stupid ****s.
I thought Bristol were dirty and Bristol fans agree that the ref was poor. But we got the most bookings. We also had fewer fouls even though there were clear infringements.

We could have won with Asante’s chance at the end. That’s how teams end up being promoted. Play poorly, win matches.
