But we have to get the ball to simms in order to do that. Which today our midfield really struggled to do because we just seemed to hoof it up front and hope for the best.

Again. Lazy analysis. If other players believed a ball into feet to Simms was going to bring others into play and be the best attacking option, it would have been done more.
Believe what you want but I know full well that the belief isn’t there right now from the rest of the squad.
Check the amount of times it was played into him and the ball just bounces off, it’s not good enough.

Thought I’d have a look. Unable to find any pass stats to Simms but I did find a map analysis of our passes
As you can see we never went central with our passes and mostly played to the wing. Is Simms brilliant in his link play? no but we don’t use him enough. We just try to get him to run the channels.
And on the belief note I can’t argue the point but would hope the squad sticks together as they seem to in the behind the scenes we do see but I can’t prove anything in this.

I heard something similar about Simms at the start of last season, whether it was true or not who knows, but he improved massively as the season went on including his hold up play and lay offs so would be shocked if views hadn’t changed
Most players just struggled to consistently pass to their teammates today, nothing to do with doubting whether the ball would stick. Just a lot of poor/average performances

I have sympathy that it’s really not his game but given how he ended last season he hasn’t started well

Yeah he's not really an old fashioned target man. Likes realistic balls to chase and go marauding, or pulled back from the byeline for close range finishes. He's not getting either, but will probably go on another scoring spree when he does.

Clearly Simms didn’t get any service today.
I think that it was mainly due to a poor display by our midfielders but it may in part have been that Simms wasn’t making the right runs into space.
Whatever the reason we weren’t a threat up front and it was fair enough for Robins to try something different.

I do agree with the point about him being brought off. The subs are definitely pre-planned. Think about how we took Bristol apart at their place last season for about half an hour, then Pearson changed their setup and it stemmed the flow. I haven’t seen Robins do that particularly often in his time with us.

I think on his own, but it would be useful if the midfield could give him the ball in good areas, it’s no good hoofing it into channels and hoping he does something.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with this. Can't really see that subbing him off at the 60 minute mark each game really improves the team or is in any way to Simms' benefit. It feels more like Robins is doing it because he feels he has to give other players some minutes. It has upset some of the things that had fallen into place in the second half of last season.
That said, I am sure thing will settle down again in the coming months.
wev‘e not gone back to knocking simms already have we, haaland would of struggled in that game today, look where he scored all his goals from last season, he never had a chance today, if your not going to play to his strengths you can’t really have a go at him, get it into him in the box he’ll score

How is there doubts about Simms’ ability, he is a good Championship striker he just isnt getting the service. He’s being starved by our lack of a midfield, we need Sheaf back and another in by deadline day I think, but until Sheaf is fit I’d go Eccles, Rudi and Palmer

It’s true that Simms does not seem able to hold the ball up and bring other players into the game. Initially Wright was the same, and we have missed Vik who was able to hold the ball and occupy at least two of the opposition’s defenders. Wright is improving in this respect, but the number of times we lost possession today, through poor passing and poor control, made it very difficult to build any head of steam in the game.

Well this is bollocks, I am struggling to remember many occasions when the ball was actually played to him.
he made a right balls of one good chance and had no chance apart from that, impossible to judge, let alone write the guy off.
this is the kind of rubbish that was being spouted last season too, “waste of money” etc

The issue was a lack of energy, a heaviness, a lack of any momentum & lots of errors- I don’t think you could single anyone out- just an all round flat performance.
Simms is a fairly shy character who doesn’t exude confidence at all at times . I think the club have worked on this but I still wonder if he is as greedy, selfish and outlandish as a striker needs to be. I honestly think he’s hidden a bit these last two games and not made the runs that he needs to be making. He started last season like this and then came good so hopefully will repeat that sometime soon

Lets face it even Stevie Wonder could see last season that he isn't a striker who likes to play with his back to goal, his strength is running on to a ball but atm we don't have anyone playing these types of balls for him plus the fact generally he is running back and forth trying to get onto the aimless balls that do get played forward, he was subbed yesterday because the team wasn't working for him and theres no point in knackering a player for the sake of it, Asante needs a goal to hopefully settle him down and Hadji needs to put his braids back in because he was not very good yesterday and I thought it was his lesser twin brother playing in place of him !

Really feel for Simms he needs the service and ball played to him. He cant do anything if he’s not given a look in, he was getting the Tavares treatment

He got absolutely no service at Stoke. At Bristol City it was only marginally better. The guy does a lot of running to no avail. Sakamoto as much as we all love him is offering no support this season to Ellis in the press.
You can have the best forward in the world, but if you don't get the ball to them they will look rubbish.
Our main problem is a malfunctioning midfield. Playing a three, if only one goes missing the other two are going to have a tough time.

I certainly believe he would have at least made the keeper work, rather than practically kicking the ball out for a throw like BTA did.

Didn't he miss a similar chance when he was on the pitch? Him and Wright in quick succession I think?
Considering how poor we played, did have 3 gilt edged chances for the strikers during the game.

Robins said Wright should have been a further 10 yards up as he would have given an for him to BTA an option to square the ball .
