Anybody actually play in a team? (7 Viewers)

Just wondering (as I look forward to the new season!), what posters actually play in a team, league or otherwise?
I'm now pushing 72 but played until I was 45, having played 11-a-side for a team called Jet Blades and then for a few years, crazy 5-a- side. I played in goals and if I say so myself, I was fairly decent. When I finally "retired" from playing, I refereed 5-a-side games for a year or so.
I don't claim to have great knowledge of who should play where, what formation etc. Being a goalie, I just got on with my job! If I had that great knowledge, I'd have gone into management!
So, come on. Who actually plays and what position?

Played Sunday League until my early 30s then moved up Manchester way, Had no desire to join another team but found a session called Turn up and play that I've played up here for 6 years to try and keep fit... but I ruptured my achilles playing a few weeks back so I think that's me done now sadly.

Played regularly through my 20’s and 30’s at a reasonable standard.
Have played vets now for 7 years - really enjoy it in the main. Haven’t got the energy to chase around 17 year old whippets on a Sunday morning.
Full back is my position of choice now.

You have my sympathy.
My dragon did a Type 3 Weber to her ankle about 20 years ago. She still gets a bit of grief from it and can still feel the screws (and the scar is still quite livid).
Probably serves her right for throwing herself off that kerb in the first place

First preseason game today. Probably going to scrape through about twenty minutes, but let's see! I'm a left footed CB, but will be trying to play more as a 10 this season whilst I play out the twilight years of my career!

Used to play years ago, every Wed (military) and Sundays. Played the occasional Sat game but it took up too much time (had a young family).

Played constantly for years…waaay too much.
I’ve signed on for another season of over 45s. The standard is ridiculous. There are quite a few ex-pros playing. Lee Trundle was involved at one stage.
Unfortunately the over playing has taken its toll and arthritis in the hip has curtailed my playing time…I’m having physio but I ain’t holding my breath.

Nice to see some "oldies" still playing! As I said in my original post, I gave up playing footie many years ago, but on top of playing into my mid 40's, I also completed the Three Peaks Challenge for charity, used to go pot holing and took a load of youths caving. Done some daft things when I was younger, but don't regret a single minute! Now pushing 72 and still feel like a 60 year old!

Played in the Stratford Alliance through 20s and 30s. 44 now and still play vets. Keep saying I’m done and then go again. Coach my kids team too which I’m starting to enjoy more than playing these days… it doesn’t take several days to recover!!

Tried the walking football the season before last - it’s really difficult. You have to unlearn most of the stuff that’s been second nature to you over the years. For example you can’t really play the ball into space for a team mate to move into, instead you have to pass it to pretty much where they are. The number of times I’ve played a “killer through-ball” only to see it gently run out of play when the geezer on the wing “walks” as if he’s had an accident in his trousers while attempting to catch the ball is laughable.

See I think this will be up my street , but what’s the rules regarding tackling ?

No tackling from the back or side, it's virtually a non-contact sport nowadays but as @JimmyHillsbeard said, 'you gotta unlearn a lot of stuff', which can be frustrating to begin with but you get used to it after a while.

Played Sunday League at a very low level for very long time. Still play five (approx) -a-side with many of the same lads, almost forty years on since we started as a regular kick about.

I'm even slower now, but the benefit of never being that good, means that I haven't got much worse.

I love it. It's probably the one thing that has kept me (relatively) sane.

Still played 5's at Powerleague up at Woodlands until about a year or so ago. It's decent up there if anyone's looking for a decent standard, friendly (as it gets) 5-a-side league. We used to play against a team with Andy Gooding, Ricky Bains and another 1 or 2 from that academy squad, they were shit-hot for that level haha. Some good team names...there's was a Tea & Busquets...Balsallona, Only Put Matip In. We were Borussia Teeth

Haven’t played since 1997 due to two ACL ruptures. But things have changed. I remember happily defenders being trained to lump balls forward from the halfway line. I also recall from the University team, our goalkeeper having to stub out his cigarette on the post when the opposition attacked

I played at the connexion in the nets when I was at secondary school for a bit, then again once I’d left school for a few years, but we stopped that when teams just wanted to turn up for a fight.
we were ok but not one of the top teams.
I lost a wicked England keeper top up there as well, blue one.
Then I started at powerleague with some other guys. Did that for a few years until we were turning up with only 3 players each week, so having to scrabble around for people to play for us - writing was on wall then.

haven’t played since and I do miss it to a degree.

I never played 11aside/Sunday league as had other commitments but I wish I had. Only time I ever played it once I left school was on the pitch at ricoh for a staff match. I did ok - played right back. Didn’t get subbed.

one thing I do notice now is that whilst I wouldn’t exactly say I was fit or had much stamina when I played 5aside, compared to now - jeez.

Switched to indoor 5s with a great mix of older cunts like myself and younger lads from the local 11s teams looking to maintain fitness. Still (just) at it at 63, with the help of steroid injections in my knee and ibuprofen pre-match. It's the best fun you can have with your clothes on, so I'll keep going until I can't.

Player in a 5-a-side league for years, twice a week at one point. As I slipped into my late 30s I couldn't be arsed with how competitive/aggressive some teams were, some lads were just there to kick lumps out of people.

I've stopped now and have been just playing a 5-a-side pick-up game once a week with a nice bunch of lads. Way better atmosphere. In my 40s now and injuries definitely linger

Passing the ball is undoubtedly the biggest problem many of them have!

I'm heavily involved.... ran for Warwickshire in the inter-counties the last two years.

Going to Pyrenees in a couple of weeks to run in the World Masters Mountain Running (v40, uphill race)

And do a lot of domestic level races..... won the short race at the Welsh 1000's in June, which is my highest claim to fame (although running in the inter-counties was an insanely higher level!
