Years ago got a flight to Athens and then did some Island hopping via the ferries. Went to Syros , Mykonos ( commercial waste of time ) and best of the lot Tinos. Wonderful Island .

Love the Greek islands , done Corfu , Rhodes , Kefalonia and Halkidiki but never been to Crete .
Would you recommend it?

Probably best to leave this to the people that have been to more than one island but since you asked me -

Few people I know that are aquanted with greek islands consider Crete the best but it is the largest (by some distance) and it is cheap to get to. If what you like about the other islands is sunshine, beaches, tavernas it has all that and likely a bit more.

Some of the bigger settlements are a bit scruffy but Rethimno and Chania are beautiful and I quite like Heraklion with it's museums and Venetian architecture. If you like history there is Knossos and Zeus's cave, if you like villages Lasithi Plateaux is an interesting place, if you want to party and eat McDonald's - Malia is the place for you. You can jump on a boat to Spinalonga or Santorini (or Athens), go to the aquarium, visit water parks, go trekking in the gorges - there are certainly things to do the first 4 times you go there...

...but the beer is terrible and for that reason I can't recommend.
