We obviously wanted to sign a couple of players today, and for whatever reasons they didn't materialise. I'd prefer us not to spend over the top, or get in some last grasp of the straw who won't make it anyway. We've kept hold of Andrews and Dausch, not sent them out on loan, so maybe, just maybe, the management team believe they can plug up the gaps, and develop, before we go again in January.

Get what you are saying, but that feels slightly harsh. Have time for most of our midfield, with the exception of Allen (and even he isn’t bad as a sub 15 mins from time). The key problem is the depth which really exposes the rest.

I have time for our midfield too, 90 odd minutes at least once a week….. but Sheaf is a class above the others, Rudoni has impressed so far playing deeper, but the others have been average at best, and certainly not promotion winning quality, plus as several others have said, Sheaf seems to be the glue that holds the midfield together and raises everyone else’s game, so are we relying on him playing every game and being 110% all the time to get the others to perform? because that isn’t going to happen….

without him we lack quality, it has shown so far this season, and it needed fixing, but yet again it looks like we’ve failed to learn a lesson which could come back to bite us.

I’m beginning to question Doug’s desire for play offs 3 out of 5 if he’s not going to back us where necessary, and if it was because we missed out on one player, we really need to look at why we hadn’t identified more given that happened before the start of the season, weeks ago

Whatever those reasons are they boil down to incompetence.

Some absolute cranks on here, Sheaf who is apparently critical to this season's success yet played in 5 of the last 6 games last season, we lost those 5 and drew the 1 he didn't play in.

No denying he's an excellent player but jesus wept he is not going to be the difference if injured between success or not.

I think it’s not that he has to play, more there’s nobody to replace him when he doesn’t

Just checked and Stamenic signed for Forrest on the 21st June, over 2 months later no replacement found. Appreciate we only hear snippets of what actually happens behind the scenes, but seeing how quickly the BTA & Bassett deals were done, makes you wonder what have the recruitment team been playing at all summer with the midfield

But presuming you are saying it’s quality not quantity then one signing wouldn’t make a difference? Getting in a midfielder would not cover the others that you don’t rate as highly. I think they’re good players, but an extra signing adds that depth in the midfield to support us through a long season. My big issue is simply the depth rather than the quality of the current players. I think we’re agreed either way that someone should have been brought in over the summer. This has been a long term problem.

I’m sure plenty of targets have been identified. Getting the deals over the line is a completely different matter.

I can't agree with that, is it frustrating? Yes, but after seeing what we've built in the last couple of years, I wouldn't say it's incompetence. We've signed good players, and it seems the right ones weren't available in our price range to go for this window. We need to trust in the recruitment team and go again in January.

you don’t need to presume as I literally replied to your message saying it’s both!

ideally we’d have two more top quality midfielders in giving the option to play two or three from Sheaf, Rudoni, Torp, Eccles and two others, but at the minute, Eccles and Torp are relied upon too much - both good championship midfielders, but Torp hasn’t shone yet and Eccles still hasn’t pushed on to that next level, and they both lack consistency - that’s not likely to get us promoted this season I don’t think

Sunderland gone absolutely mental signing players since the window closed. Looks like 3 with another to be done.

One of them is a DCM that played 6 times in the Champions League last year ffs.

What if January is to late, we should of been signing decent players before tonight, if we don’t make the top six again this season we risk losing any decent players we have now

It looks as if Lati is going to be a key player for us this season.

We all seem to agree that we need to strengthen midfield, CB and RB and in Lati we have a player who can cover all of those positions.

I don’t understand why he seems to get so much criticism from some on here. He may not be the second coming of Jude Bellingham but he always seems to give his all and put in a sound display in whatever role we give him.

I never get the impression that he ever complains about being moved about and not having a settled position in the team. He always strikes me as a good professional who does what is asked of him.

I will now put my tin hat on and wait for the incoming flak! 😆

Anyone remember the Blair Adams signing from Robins first time with us in league one, have I imagined that he just appeared in the match day squad and was then announced, wasn't announced before?

(Just trying to give hope to you all that we have spent 10 million on someone whose gonna appear tomorrow 😉)

OK so looking at where we are compared to day after transfer day last year.
GK improved Moore our Dovin in.
Defence lost McFad who couldnt get in team with 4 at the back, lost experience and a leader, so slightly weaker.
Midfield lost Kelly, Palmer and OHare replaced with Torp and Rudoni so overall slightly weaker. Wide positions have improved significantly. CF now have back up available. So altogether the squad is 2 players larger, we are slightly weaker Defence and Midfield but stronger GK and forward line. I think we are a little better off but there are clear gaps that will need to be addressed in January.

The issue is having spent so much money to still be light in central midfield is disappointing. It’s too soft a midfield for a side with top 6 aspirations I think.

So we now have only one creative midfield player. Rudoni will need to play 90 minutes of every game until January as there is no replacement and play well as we have no one to bring on to change a game or replace him.
someone has fucked up big time whether you like it or not. That midfield is bottom half championship

Agree with this. To have spent so much and have such an imbalance in the squad isn’t good enough. Top half is more likely this season.

That or we need Torp to substantially improve in the next few months. Still, at least we’ve spent millions on a goalkeeper and some attacking players.

That balances it out, right?

Depends who stays fit. We still look better than most but if Sheaf breaks down for a significant period then we've really left ourselves in a spot of bother.

Not signing Browne regardless of the outcome of the Stamenic transfer is looking like a serious mistake. Needed to be aiming for both of them, not one or the other.

Instead we have to again hope that Sheaf stays fit for the whole season…and he’s already missed the first month with injury.
