Goal Analysis (6 Viewers)

Still frustrated after yesterday’s poor showing, I’ve just watched the highlights on TV. Probably a mistake as I’m even more pi55ed off.

First goal image:
5 players in a line on edge of 6 yard box (looked to be Bassette going towards our goal). Scorer on his own, another guy on his own on pen spot. Both free to pick up any balls that drop (which happened and they scored). Not sure what Milan’s doing here.

Second goal images:
Chap picked up the ball on half way. No one within 20 yards of him, until he got to the edge of the box. Slotted home. 2-0.
Asante not tracking, neither of the 2 CMs coming across to cover until it’s too late. This seemed to happen all half.
Could Thomas not come across and tell Milan to push to press the ball here? Shows no awareness and no communication. Concerning.

IMG_1697.jpeg

Milan then pointing out the area the guy had the freedom of.

Now if I can see this watching from the stands and the highlights on TV, surely the horde of coaches can?? Yet these (and other issues) are happening from game to game. And also don’t seem to be addressed mid game.

Big concerns for me. Other teams who started slowly (eg Luton and Norwich) now picking up wins.

Your spot on on - it’s so basic. I’d been calling the 2nd goal issue for at least 10 mins before so obvious to see. They have live feeds, iPads, the lot and did nothing.

there is issues behind scenes - questions can robins sort it again when seemingly isolated this time.

there’s some really worrisome trends now, once players start arguing, showing limited effort etc that’s a slippery slope - sadly players always win. Robins needs to tell a lot of home truths, then stick with team for 4/5 games no matter. Fed up of garbage tiredness excuse.

2nd on is on Torp. (Not BTA)
Said it on another post.
Should have come over and engaged player with ball. MVE was even telling him to do it.
Left him with a 2v1...

Completely agree.
Someone mentioned on another post the body language of the players as they came out for the second half. Torp came out on his own!
I remember watching Unseen twitter vids last season, the players would wait until everyone was there before walking out. Small things, but suggests potential lack of leadership and/or togetherness.

Torp is just not up to it for me. He’s been hear nearly 9 months now. He’s regressed.

sadly he and Eccles are our only 2 fit midfielders for Leeds away.

Countless times throughout the game I couldn't believe how much time and particularly space the opposition had. Big part of that was playing a centre forward out on the right, and a knackered Wright out on the left.

Came in January last season and had a stop start pre season.
There have been signs of improvement so I'm not going to write him off just yet but as has been said ad nauseum by my self and others not bringing in another midfielder has really given us,an issue.

You can also see from these pictures that spending millions on another keeper makes no difference here. Southampton will have a keeper who was Arsenal's number 1 for a few seasons, it won't make any difference to their inevitable relegation.

Needed to invest in the outfield players first.

Our right hand side was horribly exposed for the entirety of the first half and Robins did nothing to change it. It was utterly baffling. BTA doesn’t look like a winger to me and is looking like a bit of a confusing signing at the moment seeing as Bassette has jumped him as the reserve striker.

no wonder our CMs are getting a lot of flak, if they are now expected to cover for BTA when he decides he's playing as a CF not a winger. the 2nd goal was BTAs fault. expecting CMs to leave the centre of the pitch empty to track wingers up and down the touchline all day is just crazy.
MVE knew, which is why he was having a go at BTA a few times.

The effect Fadz had on young defenders was crucial. He could direct, organise, rally and castigate as necessary. Doyle did the same previously.

The role of a decent keeper is in a way similar.

Fadz is obviously too old, but it is clear that there is no on field leadership or organisation. I would wager there is little dressing room leadership similarly.

Big voices lost in Fadz, Gus, Ady, big Dennis and so on have had a massive impact. Out form over the last 8 months is shocking.

it used to be Mark and Ady in the touch line, now it’s mostly just a despondent Robins on his own.

Is Doug, as many self-made guys are, a bit of a megalomaniac who doesn’t like other strong voices in their organisation? Maybe that’s a tin-foil hat reach but in any case some strong, positive leader men are needed in the club.

Just my thoughts.

Think it's unfair to blame BTA for that, doesn't look like a lack of trying, it looks like a down the middle centre forward being played wide right and assigned defensive duties that he doesn't know how to carry out.

He wasn't coming down the touchline and on *this* occasion, it was clear in plain sight and on live viewing that Torp should have engaged.

I do agree however that there were huge problems down this size and it was not working having BTA there

it would help if you tried, though. and at least stood in the right place.
you can see on the pic above that he's barely jogging back.
not good enough.

We have 4 players who can play as down the middle strikers, 2 who can play wide left, probably just one who can play wide right, and a smattering of central midfielders.

How do we square the circle?

WBA top of the league with the top goalscorer. Fair to say they’ve got the better end of the deal so far.

if he can't/won't play as a winger then he doesn't start.
if he can only play CF then fine, he's 3rd in the queue for that at best.
no idea why we bought him. especially buying bassette at the same time. total waste of money that could have been spent elsewhere.

i'd play tav over him, tbh. at least he knows where the wing is.

They're also pretty good at feeding him with great balls into the box. Something we don't do. I think all his goals except one have been close range similar to yesterdays 'tap in'. Right place at the right time, expecting a ball across the face of the goal.

We're not good at providing great service to our strikers.

BTA should be in there covering, he's left Milan 2v1.

However, once he's out of position, either Milan has to press with Thomas, Binks and Bidwell all shuffling across one man, or Torp has to get across and close the man down.

Get James in. Stick with this side:

Dovin
MvE Thomas Kitching Dasilva
Eccles Sheaf/James
Saka Rudoni Wright
Simms

and drill them to within an inch of their life.

Got it in one! Never make formation or tactical changes mid game, yesterday was typical for it, they were overloading down their left and BTA never moved over to his right to shut the door once. Either he is not being told or he's not listening

I think that's why everybody was so pissed off and boo'd when the second went in. We could see for ages before that mve had 2 players on him every time.

Robins did nothing about it.

Any other team would have stopped the game and re grouped to prevent it from happening.

Torp not good enough. Drop Rudoni deeper, BTA central as the 10, Tats on the right.

If not that, then for Leeds away I'd even consider Lati in with 5 at the back.

We might need one of these many coaches to be head coach and it’s his responsibility to collate all the data and be the one to give orders through the game. Leave Robins to concentrate on tactics etc, much like Adi did. None of these new people have the presence to take control ,it seems.
This shambles can’t be allowed to continue, yesterday was just embarrassing as the fans could see the issues but the staff can’t.

Just wrong, he’s looked better this season.

I think to blame him for that second goal is too much. Is a central midfielder really supposed to be defending wider than a full back?

We don’t know what they’re being told tactically so we’re just guessing really, but to me that looks like poor organisation (coaching issue) rather than one individual player.

BTA should be in there covering, he's left Milan 2v1.

However, once he's out of position, either Milan has to press with Thomas, Binks and Bidwell all shuffling across one man, or Torp has to get across and close the man down.
BTA was following the LB Tymon who inverted into midfield. They then had Cooper drift out to the left along with Eom, continually creating 2v1s. It's very clever play by them but it was absolutely criminal that we didn't adapt to it quicker.

As @Nick said earlier, other teams have their keeper go down 'injured' to stop the game so that they can make tactical adjustments. We didn't even need to resort to that, the game stopped anyway for Allen's injury but we still failed to address it. Shocking.
