This is what I find so funny about Simms. There's an art to it, like anything, but pressing is a pretty rudimentary part of the game and isn't all that difficult to do.

With the way the game has evolved, especially in terms of most teams playing out from the back, it just has to be a part of a striker's repertoire in today's game. Unless you are a proficient goalscorer you just can't get away with choosing not doing it.

You could say the same about trapping the ball but he manages to not be able to do that too.

Just looking around the games last night, we weren’t the only team in our league scoring from a team messing around at the back. Easy pickings if you can press properly in this league.

If he doesn’t improve this side of this game, he’ll be here for 4 years instead of 2.

Tbf if Bassette shows good progress i'm not against Simms going for the cash to be used elsewhere, but that presents another problem in that if Simms continues as he is then he won't be worth anywhere near as much as he was the summer just gone, which makes him barely worth selling. But for his value to rise he needs to play to get better... tricky one actually but atm its all about results so he sits on the bench after last night as far i'm concerned.

He has the physical attributes to be a dominating centre forward at this level, but not the drive or work rate.

He has to realise that to be a top forward he needs to get the most out of himself .
Look at strikers like Vardy ,Kane ,Vik as examples of driven individuals.

Bit harsh. Lots of the best strikers have many goals due to scuffs, deflections and mis-hits. It’s about being there to have a go. Lots of Haalands goals look fairly ugly but they all count the same.

As much as I like him I don't think BTA is a particularly talented footballer. However his work rate is remarkable and very much makes up for the fact that he isn't great technically.

Well the reality is godden did work tirelessly for the team.

Asante pressed relentlessly last night , you'd argue the press contributed to the 2nd goal and asante was involved .

Bassette will bring similar qualities in time , ellis simms doesn't give us the energy from the front and isn't particularly good at holding it up , so I imagine that why he's on the bench

Id have him on just to show up the other lazy fuckers TBH. Agree technically he’s poor, though not Tavares levels, he’s likeable and hard working and that goes an awfully long way right now.

Trouble with Godden was that he was way too slow to be effective in the press whereas Asante is on you quickly which makes the defenders rush clearances...you know sort of like what teams have done to us numerous times

Vik was one of the hardest working forwards I've ever seen in a sky blue shirt . It goes a long way within a side and helps move a side up the pitch

But the problem Simms has is Robins likes a particular type of striker and the signings of BTA and Bassette points towards that criteria. Hard working, likes to press, maintains high intensity throughout the game etc.

I think it's a good think to have a bit of variance in your strikers but but do I feel due to the lack of dynamism lost in midfield in Hamer and O'Hare Robins is probably now looking to his forwards to do the high energy, pressing, and creativity stuff up front.

Simms hasn’t got a minutes fight in him

Leeds away (last season) he was excellent as the lone man. He's just off form. He missed 2 good opportunities against Norwich first half which he would of buried last season. Played well at Watford and then lost his place (inexplibably) against Spurs & Swansea.

He definitely does and that probably wasn't in the script when he signed, or even at the beginning of this summer.

I think part of the problem is that Robins possibly hoped that the midfield in terms of style (not necessarily the same players) would've been similar to that in the PO season where it was able to move the ball up the pitch very quickly as a unit, had excellent passing range and also contained individuals that were capable of moving the ball up the pitch themselves with intent.

The problem is we've certainly lost that in Hamer, and as much as I like Rudoni he doesn't do it quite with the same high-intensity as O'Hare does, so as mentioned, the responsibility to take that mantle lies with our forwards.

So yes, Simms does need to adapt his game if he's going to feature heavily this season otherwise i can see him permanently being resigned to the bench.
