Can we achieve an average points per game of 1.74 across the remainder of the season?

With last nights win again Blackburn fresh in the memory I thought I'd do a little digging around to see what the average points per game is in order to finish 6th in the Championship and therefore make the play-offs. Turns out the average is 73.9 which equates to 1.61 per match across a 46 game season.

Based on those numbers and factoring in our current average of 1 point per game we need to achieve 1.74 points per game across the rest of the season to achieve 74 points.

I get that there are hundreds of factors that could and would influence the remainder of the season but do people think it is possible?

If we don’t make any signings in Jan, we’ll fall short again because the squad is the same size if not slightly smaller.

The minutes will accrue quickly for Eccles and Sheaf who averaged 73 and 82 minutes per game last season.

We’re short in numbers and one good performance doesn’t make us world beaters - we’re lacking in leadership across the park.

I’m not really setting the bar that high. I would realistically take a to 10 finish now.

If the season so far is anything to go by, its shit or bust.

Similar size, but a lot more depth. Unfortunately, without Sheaf we usually look like a completely different side. And as we don't have adequate depth in that midfield position, the season really does seem to hang on the fitness of a guy who spends half his time on the pitch gingerly shaking his ankle.

There’s lots more depth for our forward positions, out wide and upfront. The rest of the team is lacking in depth though. We’ve got numbers at CB, but Lati is also covering RB and CM with Allen missing.

The forward positions having depth makes a lot of sense because in-game substitutions tend to be wingers, strikers and AMs.

It's not the changes in game we need to worry about, it's the fitness of Sheaf, Jan to me is a pivotal point, we need decent cover for Sheaf, either our own man or a loanee, but that is fundamental to us progressing for the second half of the season

If we can manage Sheaf's fitness between now and January, resting him when possible to keep him fit for the majority of games, then we should be able to get ourselves into a decent top half of the table position, minimum. Then hopefully we can recruit in the CDM position in January (even better if we get some extra Gyokeres money) to have a proper all out push January onwards, utilising our squad depth in attacking positions to tear teams apart when fatigue sets in Feb onwards. Keeping Sheaf available between now and Jan is the key I think, and will also help to bring on Torp as he looks a lot better with Sheaf on the pitch, and has had very few minutes with him so far.

We don't need to do anything too drastic form wise just yet (although a nice run would be a bonus), if we can look to win most of our home games and pick up the odd point away from home we should be set, then we just need to go on a bit of a run at some point to get us right in the mix, and a strong finish should get us into the playoffs. Remember, the year we won League 1 we didn't win a single away game until end of December, so if we can become a unit at home to keep us ticking over until we find a way to win a few away too, and we'll be grand. None of our home games bar Sheff Utd at home look too difficult between now and the end of 2024.

Need to win two out each four from now on.

Show we can do that consistently between now and Jan and I'll be confident we've got a chance.

At some point we'll go on a run (hopefully!). I think the previous 2 seasons we had a run of 4 wins on the bounce at one point, that really catapults you up there. We only really need to be midtable within touching distance all season, with one well timed run, and then finish strongly when we're hopefully playing teams with nothing to play for. Christmas period, for example, on paper is a good opportunity to get at least 3 wins out of 4.

It’s certainly possible if we can regularly put in the sort of performance we did against Blackburn on Tuesday.

It won’t be easy though. To put it into context 1.74 points over a whole season would have meant that we finished fifth last season. I reckon that there are at least eight teams, including us, who are capable of finishing in the top six.

Too early to panic but it is a tough League. For me it is the same as always. One game at a time, after Easter is when you know what is required.

Unless there was a deal that was close in the summer (Simms for Billing?) I don’t think we’ll sign anyone permanently. Torp is another in a long line of January signings that’s failed to make a significant impact.
