Has there ever been a Cov player as wildly inconsistent as Haji Wright?

Patrick Suffo used to be the same. Could dance past players in some games and then look like a Sunday league player in others.

It's mindset though.

When he fancies it, he's up there with the best in the division. When he doesn't, he looks absolute pony.

He's throwing his chances away of leading his national side's forward line.

He was summed up in the first 5 minutes of the game. His first touch went out for a throw and then from the throw in, he won the ball back, ghosted past 3 players and had a shot from the edge of the box.

I think the obsession with him tracking back doesn’t help his game. I’d rather see him allowed to stay high and wide with no responsibility to work back.
We already have more than enough players who don't seem to have the responsibility to work or track back.

You can poo poo my response all you like, but even u8 footballers know that if a winger doesn't track back and do the defensive work it leaves the full back exposed in a 2 on 1 and targeted by the opposition.

This is so basic it's unbelievable, to suggest it as a tactic is wayyy beyond fucking rediculous.

My observation is just cold .
We can’t start on the front foot , as of yesterday again , a win in midweek gave us no impetus into the game & our constant trying to copy Englands, boring as shit type of football , is just that , shit .
We’ve lost the brains of our success & replaced him with laptops .
P.S
please Doug get some OLD heads in , that can see a game out .

It was so blatant in the second half against Wednesday that we was hiding and didn't want to get injured, with a keen eye on linking up with the new US squad under Pochettino.

How many times was there shit loads of space on the left when Bidwell/Da Silva had the ball and Haji was hiding and not making the runs. Was probably put off by Weds physicality and wanted to save himself for US. He'd occasionally spring into life when he had no choice but to get on the ball, but would look to release it ASAP. Why Robins didn't haul him off if he was just going to do that I don't know.

Standard 433 I agree. If we had bothered to give it some thought, we could have brought in a left sided CM and reverted to a 442 defensively, meaning Wright could stay high. Think from memory we tried this against someone with Allen covering LM in defence. It worked ok.

And yet he's our top scorer again

Still one of the top wingers in the league for attacking output this season. He is not the problem.
Again, he and the rest of the forwards are being scapegoated when the problem is so obviously our lack of chance creation. Of all the players taking the easy options, it isn’t the likes of Simms, Wright, BTA and so on. Watford away is the only game we can point at the forwards failing to deliver - 1 in 9 games.

When Lewandowski and Haaland get criticised for their international performances. They go from being in teams that create lots of chances to teams that don’t create a lot and that is reflected in their output in tough games.

Goal scorers will struggle to score if they don’t have the supply.

This.

I don't understand the criticism of him. He's had a few poor games but no more than anyone else. A goal in champ every 180mins is not bad.

I also think on Saturday he was doubled up on Everytime as he's our only reliable attacking threat.
Which is a result of slow and risk averse build up play. We seen what happened with England this summer, despite having world class talent available.

Pretty sure he's frustrated from lack of supply. He does seem that type of player, to get easily annoyed.

Was it against Wednesday, or the game before, that he tracked back all the way to our corner flag to make an excellent tackle and win us a throw in?

Against Blackburn and won a foul

He's easily our biggest goal threat, though if we play poorly he does. He's seemingly not the player who'll left a team that's down.

Imagine watching his performances this season and thinking the OP doesn't have a point because of a graph!

And ges not the problem, but he's one of them.
He's not the problem at all, one of our best players and probably second only to Sheaf in terms of importance to the team.

People only seem to be happy when he scores, and when he doesn't he's the scapegoat and should be dropped. Thing is, to score every game he would have to be the best player the league has ever seen by some distance and would be gone immediately. It's an impossible ask.

He frustrates me to watch at times too, but that's just the nature of his game. Get him on the pitch, give him the ball in the right areas and he will score goals, it's that simple.

Agree with others though, it's about the speed of our approach play and this season we've been so slow at progressing the ball through midfield we give the opposition time to smother him.

We need Rudoni to drop deeper to help progress the ball up field, he needs to be receiving the ball in his own half and getting on the turn, not hanging about behind the striker.

I've also been thinking that our slow build up play is causing us problems, and while I don't want us to go all out long ball I don't like relying on our defenders to control the ball at the back against nearly every team that these days presses, particularly given by definition defenders are generally the least creative players in any team.

I would like us to get the ball to our midfielders and forwards a lot quicker. If in doing so our possession stats go down a bit so be it, as we are probably more likely to score from a fast counter attack than through a period of sustained possession.

Sheaf and Eccles also need to be braver on the ball and put balls in behind defenders. They haven’t done this nearly enough and we’re never going to take advantage of the pace we have in the team if Simms, BTA, EMC, MVE, Wright and Bassette are not running onto balls. Looking at how well Vik was doing, he was constantly running onto balls behind defences from (typically) Hamer’s passes.

All too often, Wright gets passes behind him so he’s breaking stride to control the ball. Oxford (league) is a great example of what Wright can do when he’s running onto balls being played ahead of him.

There’s the issue of MVE and Bidwell either a) not trying to take players on and b) not getting the ball in the box when we have 2-3 players in there.

I don’t think we’re too far away from being a good team and do feel that whilst we’re not helping ourselves, we’ve been a bit unfortunate in some of the games. It’s not all doom and gloom.

I don't think Robins use of him has been particularly clever either. He's only played 90 minutes on four occasions. We know he's someone that can score late on when others tire.
