Don’t they also still smoke fairly heavily? That is a known appetite suppressant also, though the other lifestyle factors probably play a role.
It’s their attitude to food and the way children are educated about it, pretty strict meal times etc.

I think a high calorie and high fat diet was normal for people who were involved in heavy manual labour work. Those jobs have gone, everyone is more sedentary now but the traditional diet has remained.

It really doesn’t take long to batch cook. Is it laziness and the desire for instant gratification plus lack of education.
Those dishes and big portions have been normal for a long time. You could probably start just by reducing the portion sizes of these meals.

When we stayed in Munich and went to a few beer gardens it struck me how families reserved whole tables and each person just nursed their litre of beer for the evening. If you sold beer by the litre over here it’d be carnage.

Educate people on how weight gain and loss really work then make it much easier to self exclude yourself from junk food facilitators.
The first part already exists, its tiers 1-3 of the NHS weight management service. Consultant I spoke to put the failure rate of this approach at over 99% in people who were concerned enough about their health enough to have navigated the system to the point they can access those services.
Tier 1 Preventative programmes: Public health interventions aimed at prevention and reinforcement of healthy eating and physical activity messages

Tier 2 Weight management services: Lifestyle weight management advice. This may be given in Primary care as part of on-going personalised care. Weight management services delivered in the community led by a health care professional (e.g. dietician) trained in obesity. This may also include additional support by commercial weight management services. These commercial programmes will be well defined with scientific leadership and with clear protocols.

Tier 3 Specialist care: 1:1 management by a medically qualified specialist in obesity. This may be community or hospital based +/- outreach and delivered by a team led by a specialist obesity physician. Patient management will also include specialist dietetic, psychological and physical activity input. This will include group work and access to leisure services. There will be access to a full range of medical specialists as required for co-morbidity management

Tier 4 Specialist care: 1:1 management provided by specialist obesity medical and surgical MDTs with full access to a full range of medical specialists as required. All patients will be referred to Tier 4 by a Tier 3 service. The difference between the medical specialty at tiers 3 and 4 will be a qualitative level of experience in complex patient management. All surgical procedures will take place in tier 4.
How would you implement the second part? Its everywhere. When I started work back in the 90s I wouldn't go past a single 'fast food' place on the way to the office, let alone a drive through. Now I go past 6 and thats just places that serve nutritionally poor, calorie dense breakfasts, you can at least double that on the way home.

We've been suggesting the same things for decades as the problem has got worse and worse, what makes you think that is going to change?

As above, make it easier to exclude yourself from accessing that type of food. By and large the health professionals giving weight loss advice have never had to try it for themselves and just don’t understand the difficulty.

For the last year I’ve been losing weight but the office culture is still to bring in loads of doughnuts, cakes, biscuits etc then frown at the people who say no to them. So of course most people are on a hiding to nothing trying to lose weight in this country.

As a resident fatty, carbs rather than sugars and fats are my Achilles heel. Probably no bearing on your arguments here, but as someone who might benefit I thought I'd share my perspective. Personally I refused weight loss drugs that increase metabolism. Trying to do it myself, if I hit a brick wall I might need to reconsider, but felt if I relied on them to kick-start, that I'd be reliant on them forever.

It isn’t a good look though, is it? On top of free Taylor Swift tickets, VIP police and escorts.
When I get my Elton John tickets I’ll let you have them.

What’s not a good look? What are you even complaining about? That for an event designed to bring billions in and showcase Britain we shouldn’t have used the best Britain has to offer? That we should be offering titans of industry a Tesco meal deal and a trip to Wacky Warehouse?

And again you want Labour to cancel the Taylor Swift tour? What are you even on about?

Come on. SDS strikes again.

All the best to you with that

Pensioners will definitely be making a sacrifice and with no imminent apology for removing the WFP, sorry seems to be the hardest word.

Labour will just have it hope they’re still standing and haven’t died from a cold heart.

I always pop along to see an accountant when I need some medical advise

I read it as if he is on your side of the argument but again fails to understand what the drug actually does

He could say take this pill and you'll wake up tomorrow an elite athlete, still not taking medical advise from an accountant!

The drug is not a weight loss drug

The investments announced were already in place, the event hasn’t brought anything in. The budget looks like it will see more money move out, in addition to which Vauxhall are considering whether to retain a manufacturing base in the UK. Titans of industry shouldn’t need to be offered anything - the UK should just have business conditions that make it THE place to invest in.

Labour would not have cancelled the Taylor Swift tour - her mother would, but why should she had had VVIP police escort when the police had assessed it as unnecessary? Starmer, Khan and Cooper‘s tickets would have been worthless so wouldn’t have needed to be declared. Did you not hear about that?
