Ball carrying centre halves (4 Viewers)

Having centre halves who aren’t afraid to carry the ball is such a game changer in this league.

Our play off year we had McNally and Doyle who would pick up the ball and drive forwards, it makes other teams have to think. We haven’t done it all season so far.

2nd half today, binks was clearly told to advance the ball himself, made such a huge difference, arguably the only guy in the squad who can do it but was a massive game changer.

More of it please! Onwards.

I thought Lati was excellent today some great tackles especially first half and Binks was excellent second half down the left , but they were all ball watching first half especially for their second goal were binks tried to go with him but Thomas stood there watching him run through.

Thomas has done it about twice and fucked it up on the halfway line about 85 times.

It was an area we looked at this summer with Worrall and others and despite today's result we still need an older head

Mate this is just bollocks. Lati isn’t going to play the long balls over the top but that isn’t what we want him to do.

We had 520 passes today with around 60-65 of them being Lati. He did well in defence today and decent in retaining possession.

Nothing really to Moan about today for his performance.

Thought he did well today at keeping Morris quiet to be honest. Only issue today was him running up to press for the second goal which allowed space

I think he saw Eccles and Sheaf had vacated the midfield and tried to compensate . If Binks and Thomas had read the situation better then the goal might not have happened

I think Santos was slow and lumbering in last year’s playoff final that Bolton lost to Oxford. Should try to recruit better than him.

It's so important and when it doesn't happen we end up passing the ball sideways on the halfway line like we have in many games this season

I imagine as Maresca knew Doyle well he was aware of his potential. Not 100% sure but I also think Norwich tried to sign him this season before Man City agreed to a season loan. Given we paid £4 for Kitching it is then quite easy to see why Maresca would be willing to pay that amount. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him at Chelsea next season now as a permanent signing.

Don’t disagree with your view just more the profile of what I’d want. In that he’s massive, has experience internationally and Age wise, and is decent on the ball. Not always concerned with pace in the middle of a back three as expect them to keep a little deeper to compensate like Faz in 22/23.

I am in the same boat, I don’t think he’s particularly good, but hard to argue that with his last two performances.

Fair play to him, he’s certainly got the right attitude and if he can play in a way that doesn’t expose his limitations on the ball, I’m sure he could continue to do well.

Latibeudiere was the same v Preston. Some really good, aggressive defending. He is one player who is willing to get hurt for the team. He is also pretty good in the air, despite his relative size. If he doesn't win the header he uses his body well to make it difficult for the opponent. I know he plays a different position but he reminds me of Lloyd McGrath the way he defends.

Binks is a good player. I know he gets mixed reviews on here, and defensively he needs to improve positionally. But on the ball, he can be very progressive and has great distribution.

Also can’t fault his commitment, he isn’t afraid to mix it or put in a big tackle.

He’ll improve with time and be a good all round defender.

He was noticeably stepping forward in the QPR game too and helping progress the attack. Hopefully we continue with that tactic.

Binks also had a right go at the ref after their first goal and was clearly not happy that Kitching got booked for the foul ror the free kick just before the penalty but their player got away with a similar foul moments earlier.

And I think it worked because a few decisions went our way he he dished out a few yellows after that.

Don’t disagree he’s not as good as Binks on the ball but again, he doesn’t have to be. If you rewatch the match, have a look at how we progressed it both sides.

From the left we used Binks who created an overlap/underlap with Jack and as such he has to be strong in the pass and ball control.

On the right to offset this, Milan came close or Eccles who would often then use Milan.

Don’t need all the squad to be the same as each other. Different tool for every job and all that. Lati is a good reader of the game, vocal and is a good stopper imo.

Binks was at fault for Luton's second goal yesterday, how many goals has he been at fault for now?

I want a centre half to defend first, anything else is a bonus, getting the odd set piece goal would be good, but being a competent defender first is way more important than being a ball carrier IMHO.

If we’re gonna play 5 at the back you have to have a CB who can step into midfield otherwise you’ll be outnumbered.
