Loved Sillett but think that was a big error on his part.
In fairness to Downs he was the epitome of a player who gave his all but was very limited. It was always going to be a case of after the Lord Mayors show in regards to who’s boots he was trying to fill.

If we had somehow kept Pearce our cup winning team would also have been top 6 in the league from 1987 to 1990!!

Smith was too lightweight and hated being tackled. Would actually be a lot better in this era I think, but went hiding when he got roughed up or confidence dropped. Said on here before he used to live with my nan so was made up for him when he broke through into the first team. Made a decent career at Grimsby after with Livvo who was his best mate.

Didn’t Smith play on the right? It was normally Nick Pickering in front of Downs.

He may have had stints on the right I cant recall but he definitely played on the left. I can remember one day when it got particularly vitriolic against him and it was right in front of me and I was in the old Sky Blue stand.

I first saw Smith playing in an FA youth cup semi final against Man U at HR. He was the standout player on either side, so I wasn't too surprised when he made it into the 1st team. When he did he was very good. He would kind of drop his shoulder then just beat his marker for pace, and he was a very good crosser of the ball.

Unfortunately after about 18 months in the team he had a bad spell, lost his confidence and became a target of the boo boys which then made it doubly harder for him. I remember reading in the 'Staying Up' book that Strachan commented that John Salako had very brittle confidence and that being on the wing he picked up on every negative comment aimed at him. I think the same applied to Smith. He had the odd cameo moment after that but unfortunatey was never the same player that first made it into the team. '

I remember Smith’s debut- Sheff Wednesday in 87/88, it was probably the best debut I ever saw, they couldn’t get anywhere near him..

and you’re right about Salako, Strachan said “Richard Shaw and John Salako both got relegated with Palace- Shaw got over it, Salako never really did”
