He actually played some quite progressive balls in the 2nd half but as I said, was more his application and the way he didn't hide that impressed me.

This is very true. Have a look at the Sunderland forum match thread for the first half, and contrast that with the posts in the second half. Champions League winners/ relegation fodder.
