I agree but birmingham, manchester, liverpool all have offices for large companies like the big four and have incredible city centres (the latter two anyway), so it’s not London or bust.
Must be something that can be done with localised business rates, grants, industry specific relief, to get some businesses to set up shop. Like who could be stolen from birmingham

Problem is loads of people will say it's a shame but won't have visited in years. I don't think I've been in since the 90s!
There's not really a lot to draw people into the city centre. Since I moved back I think apart from gigs at the Empire I've been into the city centre once, and that was an in and out visit in a lunch break to drop a parcel off that could only be done in town.
When this sort of thing gets brought up you get 'it's the same everywhere' but it really isn't. Sure there's loads of shitty high streets but there's lots of places where and effort has been made to turn things around with some degree of success.
Always found it odd that with so many students in and around the city centre there's zero nightlife, place is absolutely dead.
It is what you make it. Some people don’t even appreciate how good the buses are running in and out of town. We enjoy our visits to CV1 on match days , some great old pubs and a couple of new real ale establishments, the old cathedrals lit up and some fabulous 15th century buildings scattered in amongst the newer stuff. Plenty of places to eat, albeit many chains but you won’t starve.
Ironically we have said recently that it does miss a quality sit down fish and chip restaurant …..a la fishy Moores, unless we have missed something.
For City fans young and old , I hope you have all made at least one visit to the Sky Blue Tavern, it’s excellent and the food is good.
Oh and for people on a budget, you can visit The Herbert Art Gallery, the new cathedral and the transport museum for nothing !

Me and the wife would walk in to town from Earlsdon every other week and go to the Town Wall Tavern as we always enjoyed the atmosphere, occasionally we would drop into the Windmill for a change. TWT now closed and probably not opening again so we don't bother and just stay around Earlsdon or go to Chapelfields. As much as I try I cannot think of any other pubs in the City Centre that would appeal to us.

Gatehouse and Hops D’amour worth visiting. Shame about TWT , great character place, used to do well from the Belgrade until the last couple of years when perhaps the programming at the theatre became a brain numbing succession of Girl power, Black power and shows featuring mainly Indian characters and scripts.
We have tried the Gatehouse a couple of times and never really took to it, will definitely try the Hops D' amour and the Town Crier. Went in the Stag when it first re opened, good to see it open again.

The chain is in trouble and have been closing sites elsewhere, it's under a CVA at the moment. Looks like it owes Shearer Property Group (the CL landlords £700k in rent).
If my experience of visiting town over the Christmas period is anything to go by, I'd imagine their trading figures over that period were exceptionally poor.
It's a real shame as that unit is a nice centre piece to CL.
Expect lots more of this over the next few years as the government fundamentally fails to address the costs of living for people and businesses.

The main problem is our economy has been on pause for 14 years. Cost of living is just a factor of that tbh.

I wouldn't say on pause more functioning as intended, i.e. to extract wealth from the not wealthy to ever more wealthy e.g. through monopoly privatised utilities and services, rampant landlordism, unfair practices from financial institutions. I am not convinced Labour is intent on doing that much to address any of it.

Nah, growth basically stopped in 2010 and never recovered. Not just here TBF but I think post GFC we’ve needed an economic reorganisation, be it socialism or liberalism and it’s never happened. Osborne, Hunt and now it seems Reeves all still tied to the pre 2008 consensus.
Although, I saw something the other day that showed that accounting for extra hours worked and NVIDIAs ridiculous share price rises the last year or two the US economy would be as bad if not worse than the EU so maybe we’re just post growth.
Yeah it's going on SCS been closed down and reopened with ownership change, Tetley tea the same, somebody's losing out in that scenario.

I was out just before Christmas and pretty much the same. Obviously no students but even so, I remember the weekend before Christmas used to be rammed everywhere.

No I really don’t think they do. That culture of old has really receded. Back in the day you had to go out to see and meet people and there was very little to do at home for most folk. Now our homes have become entertainment zones in their own right. It’s also so expensive to go out unless you have a night at the ‘ Spoons ‘.

Me and my mate were talking about it and listing off the places we could go back in the day on a random night out and expect them to be packed: Dog, Campbell, Colly, Planet, JJs, Ikon, Pink Parrot, the list just kept going on. You could count on one hand these days.
