FA Cup Replays / Too Many Games Argument (7 Viewers)

The fixture nonsense stretches across Europe too. I’ve got tickets for Elche v Atlético tomorrow. They stagger the kick offs to suit the TV pricks. This one is 21.30 pm , ludicrous !

And the Spanish Cup final was held in Saudi Arabia

Agreed. But a thread on FA cup replays misses the point.

In my opinion, the problems began with...

A) The end of sharing of gate receipts in the league (1980's I reckon)

B) 1992 (When football began according to Sky)

But somehow, we still have Brentford in the top flight whilst 'mighty' Leeds are floundering about for years in the second tier.

Football will always find a way to confoud the moneymen.
The moneymen seem to be doing just fine at the moment.

My personal feeling is that extra time should be scrapped. If teams are level at full time - 90 minutes - then go straight to penalties! But what do I know ( or care! 🤣)

That’s an uncharitable take!

The attendance figures speak for themselves and the outlook for our cup competitions isn’t great and hasn’t been for a while. The replay would’ve been on a weekday and attendances suppressed, especially our away support.

For every glamour cup tie, there’s 2-3 ties where there’s not that much interest on both teams end.

I’d have probably gone to a replay in Sheffield on a weekday but would’ve likely had to take time off work which isn’t ideal. I remember distinctly thinking at Sheff Wednesday away last season that I’d wish the game had been decided then and there at Hillsborough either way rather than a replay at home.
Your feelings about the replay last season don’t seem to match those of most City fans as over 19k turned up at the CBS for the game. I think almost all would have gone home happy having seen an entertaining game and a 4-1 win for our team. Don’t forget that’s 19k customers all paying on the night, gate money plus all of the ancillary spend that has now disappeared with the replays.
I doubt that you were following football when the Cup as a competition was as important as the league. Therefore you wouldn’t have known the excitement generated by your team when they held the opposition away with a great cup fighting performance and earned the right to take them on at your place.Look at gates for Cup ties up until the advent of the PL. They were almost always higher than the average gate for a league game.
Unfortunately younger fans can’t compare the Cup now and then and see how it has been devalued. It’s all been done to appease the so called elite and so a great competition is continually downgraded.
Maybe it’s because you’ve never known what it once was that you continue to agree with everything that Pep, Jurgan and their friends at the FA do to damage the Cup.

I hate pens. Maybe cos I tend to be on the losing side as a City and England fan, but just seems so against the spirit of the game.

Hasn’t the devaluation come as a result of increased televised games?

I was born in 88 but I’m led to believe the final was a national event and was the only televised game all year. Or one of the rare ones?

every game is now available somewhere.

It's hard to describe what a huge event the FA cup used to be.
It was 'FA cup day' not just the final. Coverage started at about 10am and the whole country tuned in regardless of whether your team was involved.
Being a rare televised live game was definitely part of it.
I'd wager if someone had done a survey at the time, win the league or win the cup, there'd be a surprisingly high number choose cup
I doubt anyone would now

If you want to win the tie as a smaller club, your best luck is in extra time.

If you get the replay you’ll lose the 2nd game as they will take it seriously.

Go to extra time, win the game and make your money in the next round.

No replays from me thanks

Yeah at this point I’m taking promotion over the cup.

that being said those 2 minutes between Torp’s goal and it being disallowed are arguably in my top 3 football moments.

incredible scenes… instantly had the thought of how was I getting out of my wife’s birthday for the FA Cup final

Works both ways too.. Orient now in the 4th round after beating Derby on Pens. A game they would have probably had little chance in at the return leg at Pride Park

I was against it but now it's helped us avoid playing those shithouses for the 100th time in 2 years and putting the wankers out on pens, i'm all for it. I am a fickle, petty man.
