Good decision. I am not an ITK but it always seemed to me under Robins he was always on the point of leaving.
Superb athlete and just gets on with his job.
congratulations Bidmeister. 👍

Fan reaction to this onntwitter genuinely has me gobsmacked. We have some thick fans.

Desperate for a signing, get Pato Banter and a two year deal for our reserve left back. Hardly inspiring stuff. Should have just done this in Feb and most would have been ok probably.

One year too many

Don’t know why we felt this deal was required now, would have liked to see how easy it was to get Da Silva rid of first as we are crying out for a LB and Bidders would be a good reliable back up but if we can’t shift Da Silva then we are stuck

Talking like he's 35 - the guys only 31. 2.5 years is absolutely the right length.

As he gets older he will slow down.
For the last two seasons we’ve been crying out for a left back to come and take the starting 11 spot over the top of both Bidwell & Da Silva.

2.5 years for someone we are looking to move to the bench is crazy. It was like when we gave Liam Kelly, Godden & Allen long contracts knowing we were phasing them out

He has a good football brain. The first yard or two is all in the head. Some lose pace at his age others don't.

I don't have a problem securing the services of a player until they're 33. He is dependable. Good experience for the younger players to learn from. We've already taken most of the experience out of our squad.

He'll be 34 at the end of the contract.

It's hardly "crazy"

Is this a competition for people to be the most outraged for internet points?!

Why is it crazy? 99% of the fanbase have been crying out for some experience yet you want to get rid of our most experienced player. Makes sense.

He'll be on reduced terms and more than likely will be second fiddle to whoever we bring in at LB in the near future, so I don't really see what the issue is.

Constantly chopping and changing the side doesn't work. The amount of new faces the club will have to bring in between now and the end of next summer is already sizeable. Rebuilding half the squad season after season just doesn't work. Personally I'd rather the recruitment department concentrates on the priorities.

We also need the right characters at the club and Bidwell has been a top professional throughout his time here.

Chuffed with this. My favourite player. Always feel more reassured when his name is on the team sheet

Indeed. This squad is massively devoid of experience. Not sure why signing up one of the few experienced players we have until he's 34 isn't going down well with some people.

Especially as it seems we'll be playing 4 at the back. Just need to try and move Dasilva on and bring in another LB

Aware this wasn’t directed at me, but given my opinion is the same I’ll respond to each of the points:

1. I don’t see full back as a position I’m particularly arsed about experience. I also don’t think his experience makes up for his lack of ability which I think is massively over-egged.
2. Reduced terms, maybe, but he’ll still be taking a first team wage and we now have both him and Dasilva on first team contracts until 2027. You’re putting a hell of a lot of trust in the fact we can offload Dasilva - I don’t see who would be interested.
2. “Constantly chopping and changing” we’ve pretty much headed into this season with minimal change; part of the reason it’s been so frustrating. With the fairly major outgoings likely this summer, we know there will be a bit of a rebuild required and will likely have funds available to get a significant upgrade. As it is, we’ll become over-stocked at LB if that happens.
4. Character I’ll concede on. Always comes across as a top professional. I’m just not keen on his level of ability.

1. Think you've missed the point with this. It's not about having experience at LB as a standalone per say. It's about having experience integrated throughout the squad. Bidwell has around 500 apps in the Championship give or take. Not one player even comes close to that. Bidwell may not be a natural leader per say but he's an example younger players to follow in both how to conduct themselves in training and on the pitch.

2. You don't really know what will happen in 6 months time. Yes, on the face of it it'll be difficult to move Dasilva on given his wages, I've said this on multiple occasions. But, it might be one that we'll have to shoulder a significant portion of Dasilva's wages by loaning him out. It'd also be far more expensive to bring in a new back-up LB than to retain Bidwell which won't help in that regard.

3. Not really sure what you're on about with this point? We've basically changed our entire squad in 3 windows and heading into another window likely having to do near enough the same. That's the definition of chopping and changing. We need to be pragmatic in terms of prioritising our main targets and the areas which need the most support. Why would you add more to an already overloaded plate for a squad role which isn't all that critical?

4. Unless we have the budget of Burnley's or Sheff U's we're not going to have like for like in terms of ability for a supporting role I'm afraid.
