I am outsider on this one. Haven't seen us against Swansea for quite a while for one reason or another.

But it looks like

- Sheaf is on his way out (and may not fit with what Lampard wants - maybe a quicker style of play).
- Grimes is older than Sheaf and apparently a leader. He is (if you guys above are correct) of comparable quality to Sheaf but a different sort of player.

This is all makes sense, but is Grimes going to do all the donkeywork that Allen has been doing very effectively. In a Torp - Rudoni - Grimes midfield who is going to be the grafting defensive midfielder? Grimes sounds from the above to be Mr Flashy Passer.

Wonder if that the future role for Torp - who is one of the niftiest at dispossessing opposition players
Grimes plays the role Allen has been playing but can be more progressive than Allen. Most of his passes as short and aimed at ball retention in a CDM role. It's just that unlike Allen if the longer ball is on Grimes can play it.

If I was the Swansea chairman, I'd be saying that the final condition of them agreeing to sell him is that he doesn't play Saturday.

He hasn’t signed yet ffs, when will our fans ever learn

Oh Matty Grimes is magic
He wears a magic hat
Swansea begged for him to stay
And his agents working flat (out)
For now he plays in white
But he’ll maybe play in blue
And if Doug offers him a fatter wedge
He’ll sing fuck Swansea too

Interesting that he’s handed in a transfer request when THREE WEEKS AGO he posted this…

Jheeze you’d be pissed as a fan.
This would make me feel like when Marlon King said he wasn’t leaving and then ditched us

Damn, I miss the days of you offering out handjobs for unrealistic signings that actually come off… made the forum a more happier and funny place

Personally I didn’t like his technique … it was like he was constantly struggling to get it into reverse on an old 1978 ford cortina.

Seems to me like grimes potentially changes the dynamic of our midfeild where we currently see lots of laterally and non progressive passing, meaning someone like kitching needs to rampage forward to break the pattern of play, else everything is down the wings (eventually). I'm expecting much quicker transition, hitting the channels, or Simms, making use of our forwards and wingbacks to overload defensive lines. If this is actually realised, watching city could be much more fun.

Grimes does a lot of short and sideways passing though as well as the longer passes in the videos people have posted

No doubt. I don't mean he's going to ping a killer ball everytime we get possession, but currently not much of that happens (not successfully anyway), with Sheaf doing a reasonable job of it, when he's on it.

Seems like grimes is likely more capable of doing this though. I really hope so!

He frequently receives the ball from the CB's and things start from him. As you say he does the basics but when the opportunity arrises can hit the long telling pass.

Reading up a bit that’s exactly the role Grimes plays for Swansea, especially this season, almost as a third CB with fullbacks pushing on but playing from deep. Apparently Swansea fans think he’s a bit better further forward but he’s definitely a defensive midfielder. More so than anyone we’ve got from the looks of it.

So could this be the way we move from having a 532 to a 433 with the CM able to drop to make 3 at the back allowing the full backs to still push up

He’s a defensive midfielder positionally. Not in his style of play. He’s better on ball than off

Grimes at 6
Torp and Rudoni interchanging 8’s

EMC and Wright on the wings
Simms at CF

That’s an incredibly technical, ball playing midfield three and a very fast, agile, direct and full of movement front three.

So much potential to play into space (over the top, through CB/Full back open channels) and counter teams.

And with options on the bench (Sakamoto, Bassette, BTA (if he stays), Allen) to make direct changes or even change shape.

And that’s not even considering Sheaf, who despite his poor form, is one of the best midfielders in this division - when playing the right role.

If this is the first signing in the King era with no future profit/sell-on in mind it could be an interesting summer.

Maybe the mooted investment has come on and Lampard has cart blanche for a full on promotion bid before Doug sells up

Have I missed something. We have a song and a few formations but no player yet. Could just be his agent getting it out there. Now it’s gone public could be counter bid city.
