We never had a choice between James and Grimes.

We did have a paper thin midfield group and he was available on a free long before Grimes was mentioned.

We obviously knew we planned to sign a top end CM this window so the club were right not to bring a lg1 midfielder in just to appease sections of yrs fan base. I don’t think James would get in our midfield pre Grimes and certainly not post Grimes.

You can’t just keep adding players and cost though. We obviously knew we planned to sign a top end CM this window so the club were right not to bring a lg1 midfielder in just to appease sections of yrs fan base. I don’t think James would get in our midfield pre Grimes and certainly not post Grimes.

He might not have got in.
But at the time we were linked Sheaf was injured, our midfield options from the bench were Allen and Kai Andrews and Torp couldn't last, and this is being generous, 60 minutes.
So no ones saying he's some world beater but at the time an addition with experience wouldn't have gone amiss.
Obviously I'm not advocating a 2 or 3 year contact, no one was.
