I mean this is the nail on the head. I would honestly choose to win the championship and then stay in it the season after. The gulf is ridiculous and causing a real problem. The premier league for the bottom six is just a dogfight with heavy defeat week after week. Not to mention you have VAR. I think it’ll be a matter of time before the top six join a super league and from my perspective, we’ll be better for it.

There's almost a mini league forming of bottom 4 premiership and top 4 Championship driven by money earned through promotion and parachute payments. In reality we are pushing for position 5 and 6 play offs each season now. Autos is now well beyond us unless we get a massive cash injection.

It depends what is actually meant by Prem standard, could some of them play for Southampton or Sheffield United last year and not look out of place with that level of player, probably.

A good example of that was with our local lads Evatt & McSheffrey.

Ian was let go by QPR, who did not view him as Championship standard, he went to Blackpool in L1, got promoted & promoted again, where he played a full season... and that was him done with the Prem (bar maybe a sub app as a kid at Derby).

Gary was bought for good money to help get the Blues up, which they did, and he only had one proper season there (injuries did not help).

But they had their day in the sun!

Agreed. The fact that clubs actively aim to become a yo-yo is understandable, but depressing.

This is it exactly, I wish people wouldn't post rubbish as if we would win the league if we got promoted. A number of our players are as good or better than some of the recently promoted teams' squad

A rhetorical question....but can we really say Ipswich are premier league standard? Were Luton and Sheffield United premier league standard last season? Most of the Luton side are the same side that played in the PL last season.

Yes. By definition, if they’re too good for the Championship, then they are Premier league standard. Staying up is the real challenge, of course.

I'm not even sure we can include Maddison or Wilson, neither were good enough to step straight into PL, which leaves only Dann.

By your definition, a team that is promoted to the Premiership isn’t truly a prem team until they stayed up?

If you get promoted, you deserve to be there. The teams listed are not mathematically relegated yet.

Fleck ? Another example of probably NOT a PL standard player but fitted into a team and style that did pretty well in Sheff Utds first season back in the Prem

Ipswich and Sunderland (and Brentford a few years ago) have demonstrated that you can get into that top 4 with very good management

Agree a good manager has a major part to play, but both Brentford and Ipswich have a huge financial backing. Sunderland have done really well, this season fair play to them.

There's a fair difference between being a Prem club after getting promoted and not being of Prem quality after getting promoted.

When Leeds go up they will be close to having a lower end Prem quality side. But they're a level above the next best sides. The other 2 sides that go up will not be a Prem quality team but could have a few players to help build a side that can survive. They will be cannon fodder most weeks.

We are 12th in the table and watch our poor defence, weak midfield and largely ineffectual strike force most weeks, that's how.

And yes we have players to come back, as do most teams, let's hope they spark into form quickly.

The bottom line is we bought quantity rather than quality and need major change in the summer before we can seriously challenge.
