Not sure why Rudoni is getting high marks tonight. He worked hard, but nothing worked for him except 1 cross. His passing was off, as was his control, as was his crossing, mostly. Looked tired to me.

i like him, but he was a 5 tonight.

Best game Saka has had for a long time, mainly second half but still, great work rate and troubled them going forwards. couple of quality passes
Maybe because Saito was playing and didn't feel quite so homesick and raised his game to try and be the best Japanese player there, but yes he played very well got stuck in and showed some skills

Fair play to Kitching for navigating the early booking. Last season there's no way he stays on the pitch till the end but he seems to really have wised up under FL

He didn’t stay on the pitch last night either. He was substituted as we changed our shape for the last 20 mins.
He was a little fortunate after hauling their player down on the half way line and already on a yellow. Was subbed two minutes later

Incidentally who was captain after he went off?

Simms was the best plyer first half. Chased everything
Running is the bare minimum requirement for a footballer. He had one good run with the ball when he shinned it past their Centre-half, before a good left foot cross. Other than that he was completely reactive, jumped underneath every header and failed to control the ball and bring the midfield into play.

Quietly excellent is how I would describe him.

it’s early days but he strikes me as one of those players who just gets on with his job, does it well and makes us tick.
I think he's going to do for us what Liam Kelly did in League 1 when we won the league. But obviously to a higher Championship standard. Although I'd take 2nd place next season 😉

My thoughts
First half we panicked a lot at the back, hitting hopeful long balls up for Simms/Rudoni to chase, most would have a 5/5.5 from me
Second half and late on we changed it up and Saka moved more out to the wing (felt sorry for him first half as he was all over the front line trying to help out but kept having to sprint to the right wing to cover) 6.5/7s for second half and a few like Dovin/Grimes 7.5

Grimes 6 is the single most catastrophic ever mark in the history of marks
One misplaced pass all night
Didn’t get caught on the ball
Always available
Protected back line
6
Ffs

He misplaced 10 passes.

Protected back line? He made 0 tackles and 0 interceptions and Chair went by him regularly like he wasn’t there.

He lost all 4 duels he was involved in and got booked for a pathetic attempt at a tackle. Anything above 6 is crazy talk

Dovin - what a keeper!
Saka - brings control, doesn't give the ball away, at the bare minimum recycles. Almost back to his best.
Grimes - a lovely footballer. Easy on the eye. But does not do the Allen bit of harrying and chasing. Who does that now?
Da Silva - a good game (he types through gritted teeth). Like Saka good in possession
Simms - being the one up front must be the worst job in football. I was too far away but that looked like a missed chance in the 1st half.
Rudoni - one absolutely wonderful piece of ball control from a Dovin clearance, with his chest, facing away from the pitch. And he just racks up the assists in a way the the more visible and busy O'Hare just did not
EMC - additional penetration from the start.

The main change from previous games in this run was that we had much more control and were less reliant on the long ball from the back. Much of that was down to Grimes, but not all.

This was a tight game between two evenly matched mid-table sides, both of whom are on good runs in the league. It could have gone either way, but we had more chances, so just about deserved it.

Maybe he deserved more but our shape didn’t suit him at all until we swapped. He was obviously looking to pass through the lines a lot but couldn’t.

Grimes will be better once there’s a link man ahead of the press.

Bear with me on this, I’ll try to explain what I mean.

Opponents have figured that we pass backwards once pressed. I think we all agree on this. This leaves our striker isolated. The result is often a pass back to Dovin and rebuild, or a long kick

The solution, I think, is for the forward support (Tats and Rudi last night) to pull inwards rather than drift out wide as they do. They tend to almost hug the wings.

If the opponents press our line, the AMs should push to occupy a more central attacking midfield or top of centre circle position and therefore provide an outlet for the CDMs to pass through the press.

Allen does this and did it quite well of late. BTA was trying to occupy that space but doesn’t have the first touch to be effective there.

Rudi and Tats played almost as wingers last night. They need to pull centre when we are being pressed.

WRT ratings:

Dovin 7

Good stops but needs to learn to be on his toes to spot potential breaks.

MVE 7

Always 100% effort and will do well if Tats pulls a bit more central and then he can work on overlaps.

Kitching 6

Some poor passing

Thomas 8

Plus 1 for goal and plus 1 for the blatant shove over of Cook to get to the ball. Is that Cook that shoved Gus and got him sent off when we first came up? I think it is. He’s a tugger. Tbf the goal should have been disallowed, but F’em.

Binks 6

Did ok - didn’t see anything brilliant from him.

JDS 6

Same as above.

Grimes 7

Remember the Damned United and Taylor saying to Clough that he needed to sign Dave McKay to sit in front of the defence to pull the strings. Grimes is our Dave McKay. Still settling in but I can already see how he will make us tick. Someone needs to be his stuntman for when he’s out or we will end up being lost without him. Eccles or Toro need to watch him and play exactly like him.

Rudoni 7

Needs to pull centre rather than sit wide. Not too bad last night.

Tats 6

Same as above.

Torp 5

Off the pace. Lost a lot of 50/50s and was easily pressed back. Just a bad day at the office.

Sims 6

Getting better - should have scored. Needs to come deep now and again to provide an outlet from midfield.

Subs

EMC 7

Like the way he puts himself about. Most wide-men / wingers are slight and intricate. EMC shoves 6 ft 3 defenders about. Like it.

Eccles 6

Ok.

BTA 5

Almost forgot about him. Strange choice to replace Sims to lead the line. His aerial ability was poor and his first touch with back to goal (ie what target man should be good at) was lacking.

Wow 7 for EMC, he only touched the ball 7 times. 1 shot, 2 passes, 1 header, 1 dispossessed, 1 unsuccessful touch, 1 unsuccessful cross. And was offside.

Serious question - is it your intention to run vendettas on all of our players. Last week Dovin, this week Grimes. Don't entirely see what you are getting out of it.

Yes but he put their big lunk of a defender in his place. Gets a plus one. Fed up of our players getting bullied and none of them having the minerals to stand up.
