That's a good question. Europe has to step up, and quickly.
A peace which rewards the aggressor won't be a lasting peace, we've seen that in Europe and specifically with Putin before.
So now it's about giving Ukraine the ability to dig in and defend itself until Russia realises it's an unwinnable war, even given Trump's about face.
Keep the economic squeeze on Russia and tighten it more if possible.
Over the next few years, use seized Russian assets and if necessary war bonds to fund the purchase of U.S. weapons to give to Ukraine, assuming that direct U.S. support is no longer available.
In the meantime, ramp up and rationalise European military capability so that when the time comes, Europe can be the realistic guarantor of any future peace deal, assuming that America is still in its pro-Putin isolationist phase.
What other choice is there?
Accepting Russian conditions is not justified by the current situation in Ukraine. Instead, sustained Western assistance to Kyiv has strong prospects of securing a stalemate that protects European security and advances Ukraine’s goal of joining the European Union.
