I think there is better awareness of it, whereas before it was just naughty kids. With it being a spectrum, and so many different ways it manifests itself, it's a difficult one to deal with.
Having said that, I do also think that there are a small number of parents who take the diagnosis and use it as an excuse for their kids doing whatever they want. While i don't doubt the diagnosis, I do think some parents could do more to help their children by telling their child off when they do something they shouldn't.
There are some kids who will literally just go around hitting and kicking other kids and their parents do absolutely nothing saying "it's because they're autistic so what can you do?" but if another kid gets annoyed and hits them back they're the first demanding that child be punished. Even heard of parents making formal complaints against teachers because they've told a child off for such behaviour. That's beyond autism and into 'naughty'.
In cases like that it's basically that they've never got out of toddler mode where they expect the world to revolve around them. If you don't teach them that behaviour has consequences then you end up with kids like that who think nothing of hitting others. I don't doubt that's more difficult to do with an autistic child, but it's going to make their adult life exceptionally hard if you don't.

The autism link was based on fraudulent science that should never have made it through peer review. As for the statistics, I think we've simply developed a better understanding of behaviours that were once dismissed as being 'anti social' as higher functioning autistic traits.

Maybe at the least effected edge but as about 30% of autism diagnoses are essentially non verbal those are surely accurate. When you looks at the rates of increase in the USA it is staggering. The table below is from an offial CDC website.
