ACL and the City Council announcement (22 Viewers)

It has been difficult keeping quiet, having information and not being able to share it. The Coventry Telegraph will have more I am sure about what has happened this afternoon.

We have been working hard to do what any business should do when faced with such a serious challenge as ACL has faced with Sisu’s rent strike. I am sure that many of you will have heard the news that Coventry City Council has made an agreement with Yorkshire Bank for the Council to pay off the debt Arena Coventry Limited previously owed to the Bank. The Council will now make a loan to ACL of £14.4m, which will make repayments to the Council at an interest rate much more affordable for ACL as a business.

You will have other questions about how much, how long, what rate of interest etc, at the moment I am unable to answer as they remain under commercial confidentiality.
The agreement gives ACL’s already strong business even more stability. It means that the Board of Directors can plan for the long term with more confidence than ever. The people of Coventry will also benefit as the interest on the repayments made by ACL will be available to the Council to spend on goods and services.

This is a decisive move by the Council to secure the long-term future of the Ricoh Arena as an asset for the City of Coventry and a decision which ought to be welcomed and applauded by everyone posting on this forum.

I am already receiving calls and messages asking me what this means with regard to the situation with Coventry City Football Club. The short answer is that nothing has changed. CCFC, under the ownership of Joy Seppala and her Sisu staff including Tim Fisher, has a legal obligation to pay its stadium rent.

The Board of ACL has already issued a Statutory Demand for payment, the deadline for which has long since passed, and is now looking at its legal options. These legal options include petitioning the courts to grant an order to wind up CCFC and starting off the process of placing the Club into compulsory liquidation.

Nobody wants this to be the outcome, but the clock is ticking and now is the time when Joy Seppala and her colleagues need finally to take responsibility for their actions, pay the rent which is lawfully owed, and come to the table with the Board of ACL to present a realistic business and financing plan which will safeguard the future of CCFC.
And why wouldn’t they want to do this? The City Council has just presented them with an opportunity to build a better business relationship with an outstanding business which is in an enviable and sustainable financial position. Everyone at ACL is absolutely committed to seeing the Sky Blues play at the Ricoh Arena for many years to come.

My appeal to Sisu is therefore a simple one; please come and have a sensible conversation. And please stop trying to blame all the Club’s financial problems on the stadium rent, while drawing misleading and inaccurate comparisons between the rent paid by CCFC and that paid by other Football League One clubs, none of whom enjoy the benefits of a facility comparable to the Ricoh Arena.

From the Higgs Charity’s perspective as a shareholder, we are completely in support of the Council’s move today. I am sure there will be speculation also about the Charity’s intentions in relation to holding on to its stake holding in ACL. Some of you may even feel that this would be a sensible time for Sisu to make a realistic offer to assume the Charity’s share.

Again our position is unchanged. The trustees are proud to be part of ACL and we’re committed to the Arena for as long as it takes. We won’t be bullied or harassed by anyone trying to take our share in the business for less than its true value. But, if any third party makes a sensible and realistic offer, then we will of course give it the consideration it merits.

Once again I apologise for the length of this update. I would of course have preferred to share this sooner but I am bound by the obligations of the law and of confidentiality on this hugely sensitive matter. As ever, I am happy to answer questions where I am able to do so.

Shrewed move!
Removes completely any threat of ACL going bust.

Now it's up to sisu to show their hand.

council are evil

who cares if ricoh is state of the art,we only want the football part of it so lower the damn rent

The lower rent offer is still on the table what this removes is the real threat of SISU forcing ACL into admin and getting hold of the Arena on the cheap and flipping it for a quick profit. Ball is now firmly in SISU's court.

Question PWKH:

"But, if any third party makes a sensible and realistic offer, then we will of course give it the consideration it merits."

Does mean the Higgs charity would consider selling to anyone who has the money to buy your share? Or is that '3rd party' CCFC and only CCFC?

are you sure? if so great news and thanks for the info,i thought perhaps they had gone abck to wanting full price

what about the money missed so far? they want that?

and whats so wrong about sisu getting hold of the satidum and selling it? we could get high investing owners out of it

the council owning it is still bad for ccfc imo

So, SISU need to find some money then. They were holding ACL to ransom. It seems that ACL does a better job of managing thier debt than SISU. To me, it makes no difference where we play in the city boundaries. SISU have been playing with fire.

Can you tell us when the Ricoh sponsorship runs out and whether ACL are in negotiations with anyone to sponser the Ground going forward?

As a fan of The ground and the club I would love to see it given a name that is associated with Coventry i.e. The Gasworks Stadium or the Three Spires etc. If it had to be a company for sponsorship income I'd love to see a local name i.e. Jaguar, Jewson e.t.c.

Trying to look on the bright side of things, and bare in mind I know pretty much nothing about this situation.

The Council part own ACL. They can't give money directly to CCFC. So they 'loan' money to the ACL to ultimately help CCFC?

Like I said in another thread although people are saying "Well its SISU's turn now" Until we know what ACL are planning to offer (a) the offered rent amount or (b) a small rent amount due to what is a cushion agreement with council. Then nothing is really sorted yet!

not sure i follow hill83

they help ACL from going under so they can continue to demand rent

not sure how it will benefit city

yeah and yet some will side with the council and act like they care about the future of ccfc

I dont understand your point here? SISU owe rent, the council have listened to a company that is doing right by Coventry the City, they have supported that by loaning money....why shouldnt SISU pay what they owe and AGREED to, then negotiate a reduction.

What has the council done wrong?

As we understand it the offer is as was reported with the owed rent being paid over 10 years. Problem with SISU getting the stadium would have been if their intention was simply to sell it on immediately to a third party. Not selling football club but the arena complex, This would have left CCFC still as a tenant but to who and a major city asset in the hands of who? This way the complex stays as a City asset. The club has a much reduced rent out of it which is good news for CCFC going forward.

The money could allow ACL to offer a smaller rate if they felt kind.. Due to not having to worry about repayments to Yorkshire Bank but ultimately a small rent to the council they could probably get away with offering CCFC a smaller rent amount..

Has it been considered if SISU don't like all of this and decide to place us in admin, cut their losses and leave town, blaming the council on the way out? What then? We're docked 10 points, lose managers, players and left with no one out there who wants to buy us. Far fetched perhaps, but who's to say SISU won't do this?

The rent is too high compared to comparable stadia. It needs addressing and this announcement changes nothing. I would hope any new rent deal will be backdated to the start of the dispute. Both parties need to meet in the middle somewhere, surely even ACL recognise the current rent is way above market value, particularly when no revenue streams are made available to the club. If I rented a house at over market value I would expect full control over it and wouldn't want someone else sporadically using it or another business being allowed to trade from there with no recompense to myself.

say that again when there is no CCFC

Lets all celebrate the club getting creamed by extortionate rent.

The council and ACL are playing the game.. and a shit one if you live in Coventry. Trying to convince people that the Ricoh is an asset to the City.

If anyone in and around Coventry thinks that the Ricoh is worth anything (jobs or money) to the City without a football club...you're as gullible as they hope you are.

Not much of an asset though if there isn't a football club in it.

This way the complex stays as a City asset. The club has a much reduced rent out of it which is good news for CCFC going forward.

The club is essentially in admin though-SISU have long wanted out and need to find a willing buyer. All 'debt' is owed to SISU investors so there would be zero point in placing the club in administration. Involvement in the ground makes the club a lot more appealing to buyers and is likely at the heart of withholding the rent.

say that again when there is no CCFC

Again...that is SISU not the council.....we owe rent why the fuck should sisu not have to pay it? I just cant get my head around the anti council feelings.

And blaming the council for the demise of CCFC.....you must be on crack

Masterstroke by all those involved, wonderful news for the City of Coventry, ACL and the future of CCFC, thats assuming the owners really want to Cov City football club. This now removes all and any excuse for SISU not to agree the very generous offer ACL has made to them.

Yes, it's a weird one If SISU do want out who on earth is going to buy into a club when the stadia they play in is unaffordable?

Pretty much what Robccfc said.

ACL go bust if 'we' Sisu don't pay rent in full. Council don't want this.
Now ACL can't go bust but can still offer lowered rent?
As I say, I'm literally guessing, but it gives ACL the option to lower the rent and stay in business, a business which is co owned by the Council themselves.

Win win for the council. A company they co own stay in business, the city keeps the football club.

Always look on the bright side I say.

This is now the million dollar question - SISU's gameplan of getting the Arena is now sunk so what do they do next? Do they liquidate the club? Unlikely as they wouldn't get much back and to do so would simply be an act of spitefulness. They may decide to stay and run the club on a commercial footing - again unlikely as they have already put a huge amount in for no return which leave them selling the club for a sensible amount, not a Pound but more than liquidating would get them but a lot less than the amount they have invested. Club would be of interest to people especially to anyine willing to work in partnership with ACL rather than against it. There i plenty of scope for joint development around the Arena which would be attractive to investors.

I'm glad you mentioned them putting in a huge amount. They have, many don't believe it for some reason.
