CET: Carsley in charge for swindon and bringing new striker in on loan... (3 Viewers)

COVENTRY City are looking to bolster their play-off firepower by drafting in another loan player ahead of Saturday's Ricoh Arena clash with promotion rivals Swindon Town.
Development director Steve Waggott is hoping to add more quality to the Sky Blues squad today to enable the player to train with his new team-mates and prepare for the weekend, and the signs are that a striker is his priority to help with the final promotion push.

The Telegraph also understands that interim boss Lee Carsley is expected to be in charge for the visit by the managerless Robins with City not expected to make a full-time appointment until early next week.

“It would be nice to bring in an extra body and we will be talking to one or two people today to try to get something done before the game against Swindon,“ confirmed Waggott.

“I've said to Lee that we will help in every way we can * that's why we brought in Aaron Martin until the end of the season and recalled Cody McDonald from Gillingham to bolster what is already a strong squad.

“We will work as hard as we possibly can and I've already made several inquiries regarding players.

“We will do our best but as Lee Carsley said earlier in the week, we only want to add someone if they can add extra strength to the squad.“

Centre-half Martin, meanwhile, has already made the desired impact as he looks to complete a hat-trick of promotions after joining the club from Premier League Southampton this week.

The 23-year-old defender made an impressive debut on Tuesday as he helped City keep a clean sheet to secure three crucial points against Saints' neighbours Bournemouth.

And his first impressions of his new team-mates are that they are more than capable of getting back to the Championship in the last eight weeks of the campaign.

“I am massively impressed by Coventry,“ said the 6ft 3 inch tall centreback. “The way we defended and the way we counter attacked was brilliant and we need to keep pushing and maintain the high standards.

“I have learned a lot from getting back-to-back promotions, knowing how hard you have to work and literally day-in, day-out looking after yourself to make sure everything is right. You have to be the ultimate professional if you really want to go up. There's so much you have to sacrifice to do that but it's so worth it in the end and I think the boys here are more than capable of doing it.

“If I could get another promotion on my CV it would be brilliant * three in three would be amazing.“

Martin has already shown he's got the quality to help City achieve their ambitions with a busy but assured display at Dean Court. “It was great and the best thing was to keep a clean sheet and take three points away from home which made it a really nice start for me,“ said the Isle of Wight-born player who started his career at non-league Eastleigh.

“There was plenty to do because they came right at us for pretty much the whole of the game, especially the first 20-25 minutes when they were pressing us high.
But I thought we dealt with it well and they are the patches of pressure you have to get through, and these are the games you need to win if you want to go up.

“I got a phone call last Friday and I was chomping at the bit to play some more games so I came up to Coventry on Sunday night, trained Monday and started Tuesday.

“It is a little bit difficult slotting in to a new back line, so it's a case of getting used to different players and how they play, but they are all good lads and have made me feel really welcome. And they showed against Bournemouth that we'll only get better.“

“The way Leon Clarke took his goal was absolutely brilliant and it does so much for the team to score just before half time. It raises everyone and for us to come out in the second half the way we did was really positive.

“They should arguably have been in front with the clear cut chance they had but you have to take your chances when you get them and they didn't. They put a lot of balls in the box but we defended really well.

“The manager told us at half time to try not to drop too quickly and make sure we keep getting the ball back and when we did to relax on it and hit them on the counter as well. And I thought we did that really well.

Martin praised the way caretaker boss Lee Carsley helped close out the game out with his choice of substitutes, sending on a third centre-half in William Edjenguele as well as the David Bell and Cody McDonald.

“The gaffer got it spot on with the subs, especially when Bournemouth sent their big man Steve Fletcher up front because William did well just sitting in front of him and stopping him from flicking it on. They were great subs who did so much for us when they went on.

“I'm looking forward to playing at the Ricoh and we just have to work even harder than we did the other night. If we can play like that and stay solid I think we can turn things round at home.

“I played quite a few games in League One and last year in the Championship as well. This league is where I learned my trade so I know it well and hopefully I can help Coventry do well while I'm here.“

No surprise re Carsley - the club's glacial speed at managerial appointment means that I'd be surprised if the new manager arrives before next weekend.

A bit surprised about having another new striker though - Cody has just returned and Philiskirk has joined, so we have those two plus Clarke, Elliot and Ball - and Sheffers plays as a second striker sometimes - how many more do we need?

He's lying obviously. We have not brought in anyone called Martin. We are not playing Swindon on Saturday. We have not recalled McDonald from Gillingham. Mark Robins has not left. And who the hell is Lee Carsley? I just can't believe anything this lot says anymore.

YEah, we do seem to have plenty of people who could do it up front, but Ball and MCSheff can't and McD seems like he's never going to get his chance to prove himself. So, really we do need some more fire power up front.

this laon could be huge

if we pull of a premier league coup it could be enough to get us over finishing line

wonder if hes after a power house or poacher type

harry kanes already gone to leicester, maybe we could go for man citys guidetta guy

Striker needed as cover, so thats good news. Hopefully we will have another DMG. Dont think we'll ever be that lucky again. Dont mind about Carsley being in charge for Saturday. He's doing a good job so far. 3 2-0 wins and a 2-1 defeat isnt bad for a caretaker. Hope he is at least being considered for the job. Not saying that he's my pick atm, cus he's played 4 games, so its not really a full reflection of what he will do if he gets the job, but after what he's done, he should at least be considered. If he isnt given the job, he needs to stay here, cus the next time the manager leaves, i think he will be ready to take over on a permanent basis

I get the feeling Carsley has alot more about him than some previous caretaker managers e.g. Heath, Shaw etc and will go on to be a highly competent manager. That said, I think it's too early to give him the job this time, though I'm hoping he can retain a role somewhere in the new manager's structure so that he can be ready to step in next time.

dont expect a big name striker. At this stage of the season can you imagine many teams letting a player who could particularly have an impact for them going out on loan? I think its more getting another body in for options. weve got Clarke but there are currently question marks around everyone else. Philiskirk - can anyone say theyve seen enough of him to say he is the guy to fire us into the playoffs? Elliott - injured. Sheffers - isnt really a striker, he can play there but again relying on him? then theres Ball who seems to struggle with injuries so I think it is pretty wise of us to get another striker in as cover - just dont expect another Mcgoldrick!

Philliskirk was bought in until the end of the season to have a longer look at. Elliott is out for the rest of the season. Ball is seemingly injured all of the time and hasn't really impressed.

Yep, another striker would be a welcome addition.

If we go 4-4-2 though, I would like to see Cody and Leon given a go up top together. McDonald has got match fitness and goals at Gillingham now and Clarke is still banging them in. Could be a good "big man/little man" combo up top for this league, maybe the L1 97/98 Dublin and Huckerby? ;)

I don't think your being fair on Philliskirk.

Why would they have sanctioned his transfer (for 5 months) if he wasn't good enough?

He's a player for the future (as our departed manager said) and they probably don't think it's time for him to be in the first team.

It's nothing to do with him being shit, just not his time yet!

Yeah someone who scored 20 odd goals in the Dutch Premier League last season is really going to drop into League One

was only an idea mate, he hasnt gone anywhere this year has he? sure he played in carling cup

if hes not doing anything right now it might be an option for short term loan

but if not there should be some prem teams out there with young stars that are willing to play in league one

lets hope waggot comes through

if we do play 4-4-2, I dont see it being with Macdonald. Elliott goes out injured during a period where we are playing 4-4-2, MacDonald comes back and still doesnt fit into the system and doesnt play. Elliott was an ideal man to play with a Clarke or McGoldrick as he battled, chased, and created space - therefore opportunities for our main guy to score goals, which they have been doing. Macdonald wants to be the guy scoring the goals himself.

Its been 1 game, away, at a decent side in the division. Of course Carsley was going to revert back to 4-5-1 regardless of McDonald coming back or Elliott being fit.

Far too early to say that we won't be playing 4-4-2 again this season just because Cody can't play alongside Clarke (no evidence of this yet) and because Elliott is out for the rest of the season.

I agree there!

4-4-2 is an option that he'll keep in his bag of tricks.

Just because they start at 4-5-1 doesn't mean they'll neccesserily stay that way for the whole game.

It all depends on what is happening and how the other team is playing agianst us in their starter formation.

As we saw with Robins, the formation changed with choice substitutions and a good percentage of the time it affected the match in our favour.

We've predominantly used 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 & 4-4-2 this season and all have had varying degrees of success and failure dependant on the teams we're playing.

So having players on the bench that Carsley can use to change formation is paramount!

He needs Cody on the bench to do this as does he need players like Thomas, Barton and Edj.

He proved this the other night when he brought Edj on as a third CB.

Edj held up their experienced striker for the whole time he was on the pitch, he did exactly what Carsley put him on there to do!

So saying Carsley will never use 4-4-2 again for the rest of season is preposterous as you have no idea what the teams we go up against are going to do against us!

And as Sterling said we have no evidence to say Cody wont do well next to Clarke.

He hasn't had the chance yet so again don't judge until you've seen them next to each other!

Elliot is apparently out, phillskirk is never gonna play and all we have attacking wise is l Clarke and Cody. Macca can play up front, but I can see why we want/NEED a new forward

Didn't say he was shit.
Not good enough yet or not ready etc.
You can't count him, otherwise he would of been in the squad by now
