Is O’Donovan worth a run in the team? (1 Viewer)

With us currently needing a forward I was wondering is it worth giving O’Donovan a go? I’m not saying for us not to sign another forward but as he is being paid anyway, and being realistic about who we could sign I think he is maybe worth a go. To be fair to him I don’t think he has had a decent chance since he arrived and I’m sure he would try harder than Eastwood.

With the chances being made and his pace he could do a job.

Inclined to agree. Two managers last season didnt rate him highly enough and even with our current forwards he is 4th choice. Worth the risk last season on a free but didnt work so move him on.

It's an unusual situation with O'Donovan. I saw him play in preseason where he struggled to impact against Treacle Town. From what I beleive his only other proper appearance was against Rotherham.
Obviously they made a decision based upon his training performance and behind closed door games but like you have said he is still being paid and is it fair to judge a player lacking match fitness at the start of the season?
Personally I would have given him the odd sub appearance even if only to justify to the fans that he is not of a high enough standard but as far as we are aware we have a young striker in the team who we signed from a Premiership team who has not been given a chance to show the fans what he is capable of.
The perfect opportunity for me would have been to give him some playing time when McSheffrey got injured towards the end of the season when there was no pressure in the games. I would have liked to see him play at the top of the diamond.
I think the fact that Thorn still refused to entertain the idea of playing (despite making the bench regularly) sends a clear message that Roy will not be in his plans going forward.

he's young and i think it's in his hands, if he keeps fit during the summer, trains hard and makes an impression pre-season (when he's more likely to get a game) then i'm sure he'd get a chance to play some first team footy considering he's here anyway. How longs his contract for?

I wouldn't really say he's young at 25. He's at the age where he should be about to peak in terms of ability (maybe 1 or 2 years to go max), so unless he steps up now he'll never be a good striker for the Championship.

With the younger Jukey already established ahead of him, and with the also younger Jeffers and Wilson waiting in the wings, I think it's time Roy moves on. Platt also adds a dimension that Roy cannot and Eastwood beats him for pace. With all of those on the books and with us in the market for at least another one for me he's surplus. Plus his lack of appearances thus far clearly shows he either doesn't put in the effort in training or the more likely option that his skills are not up to scratch.

His contract runs for 2 more years.

He is League 1 standard at best, so why would we keep paying him to sit in the stand. Hartlepool, Carlisle and Northampton have all been linked i say free the wage up and let him go...

He means Morecambe.

And I think you'll find he's probably the fastest player in our squad by some distance.

I don't get it...ok he was rubbish versus Morecambe, but so was everyone else bar Hussey. Whenever I saw Roy for Sunderland he didn't look entirely out of his depth, and although he was usually a sub and used out wide he did play some top-flight football not long ago. He looked quick for Blackpool against us, and one of their better players.
His Irish league goalscoring record stands good comparison with the likes of Kevin Doyle. I saw all his goals on loan at Hartlepool in L1 the season before last on TV and he looked quality-certainly on a par with countless other strikers in L1 who are now banging them in at this level (Morrision, Pitman, Jackson, Mackail-Smith). Indeed a full season at Harlepool with the same strike-rate maintained (no guarantees of that) would in theory have put him on 27 goals in 45 games. Given the support for the likes of Le Fondre on here now and Charlie Austin elsewhere in the past...surely Roy deserves a chance?

If we play the 3-strikers (as opposed to 4-1-2-1-2) that Thorn tried when he first took over, he would be very suited to the right-hand role. He'll get a chance in pre-season no doubt, from there I think I'm happy enough to back Thorns' judgement. He won't get frozen out whatever happens as that's not his way of treating players. Plus he seems a good lad-known for his work-rate at previous clubs, Claus speaks well of him, and he came back here 'cos he wanted to prove whoever released him (Strachan?) wrong. I saw him once where I work, seemed a genuine guy! Can't be on massive wages if he went on loan to Hartlepool.
