It is possible to support another team or is it? (3 Viewers)

Here's a thought & I'm going to get slaughtered for this.

It is possible to swap your allegiance to another club (if only temporary), it's not for everyone I know and it doesn't have to be exclusive, but it is possible.

I've been a CCFC fan ever since I could chew bubble gum in the 60's (Remember the bubble gum cards) & that will never change.

However, about 23 years ago we (A few work mates & myself) decided to follow Atherstone United during it's FA Cup games for a bit of a crack, little did I know that it would turn out to be their best ever run and they reached the 2nd round proper only to be knocked out by Crewe at Gresty Road.

The point is, we had a great time, especially some of the away games & I have to say every goal they scored was celebrated as if someone in Sky Blue had scored it. When it was over it was over and I've never watched them play again.

Anyway the moral of the story is if you find yourself kicking your heals on a Saturday, pick a local side and start following them home and away and you might just be surprised.

p.s. Atherstone United were put into liquidation in 2003 and came back as Atherstone Town in 2004

I get your point, I'll be going to watch Salisbury city if cov move to Northampton, but I won't be able to cheer a goal with same vigour as I would a skyblue goal. I wouldn't class myself as a Salisbury fan, more a follower. Ctid

Fine if you wish to support another local club I would say.

Completely different if you switch to a rival club.

Supporting another team, NO. It will always be Coventry.

However, going to watch another side now and then or following a smaller, local team (more to boost their coppers more than anything) is fine IMO and something I do on a regular basis. I'm at University and regularly go with friends to watch their respective teams all over the country when I can't get to Coventry matches. I've been to away games with Leeds fans, Bristol City fans, Portsmouth fans, Liverpool fans etc etc and its more for the love of the game and days out on the piss if nothing else. For 90 minutes you could say I do support those teams as I join in with the chants and do find myself celebrating goals in the same vigour I would do Coventry goals, but have I ever genuinely cared about those clubs past those 90 minutes like I do Coventry? NO.

I don't think any of us will be able to truly "support" another team with the same passion we do/have done Coventry City.

I've mentioned this before, but I'd only go and watch England games if CCFC no longer existed.
I'm not really a fan of football, I just support Coventry and England.

Nope. There's supporting a team, and there's going to watch a team.....you can't change what's in your heart.

Went and watched Sheff Utd games for a bit with some Sheff Utd mates(in between City matches), but although had a good day out, the score didn't matter to me and nothing about it tugged at my heartstrings. Only means anything with City - nothing can replace them (although can get excited - if that's the right word - when England are playing important games:wave:

I'll split time between Leamington and Wakefield this year. May give Coventry United a try too.

Of course, if CCFC are back in Cov that is where I will be. I'm the opposite to hill83, I enjoy watching football at any level. Agree it doesn't feel quite the same but you can still enjoy it and get behind a team.

If you can get to see your team easily you're not likely to support another. Hence anyone living in Coventry has had no reason to support anyone else. But it wil be a different story if CCFC aren't playing in Cov. There will be easier teams to get to than Northampton and if you go often enough you will become a fan - it is as simple as that.

Going occasionally you won't and that is the difference. A lot of people will never support anyone else but there will be a big number who are drawn to another club - just to get a more enjoyable experience all round.

It hasn't been enjoyable to watch CCFC for at least ten years. This season was the first decent one for a long time and then SISU go and f*ck it up.

Particularly with Scottish football. What's the fun in knowing the result before you start.

I used to go to england games too but I've lost the enthusiasm for them also. Too nicey nicey these days. I know they under achieve but I'm used to that its the atnosphere that's gone and sadly I think frever. England away is still good but too expensive for me to do regular.

More likely I guess I will go to horse racing and boxing more instead of another team

I started going to watch Accy Stanley towards the end of last season. It was interesting to see how difficult it is for the poorest supported club in the league to survive, and helping them towards that makes it feel quite personal. Standing with their 'Ultras' who really are a massive and well appreciated part of their club and community, is in stark contrast to how it feels as a fan of a 'big' club like City, where I'm just another entrance fee paying mug. I can't celebrate their goals as wildly as I do ours, but it'll for for me.

Would never support another club, wouldn't feel right. I do have some mates who follow mansfield town and ilkeston town, so have a soft spot for these two equally down in the dumps clubs....and to be honest have had a good laugh with said mates when i tag along with them.

What about supporting/following a team in another ball game? Coventry City are the life long team in my heart, but growing up in Sydney I played rugby union & followed the local team passionately but rugby league is the big sport on the east coast of Australia & all he kids at school had their own team to follow, so did I. I'm off to watch rugby league & the mighty 'Green Machine' (Canberra Raiders) play St George Illawarra 'Dragons' in Wollongong on Saturday with my kids. Each kid follows one of the teams.

I also spent a lot of time watching the Sydney Swans playing Aussie Rules & they when they won the Grand Final in 2005, they broke the then longest drought in the code of 72 years since a win. They had since won again in 2012. I can still 'fire up' at any game I watch involving a team I follow including my kids teams.

However, the thought of following another English football club is repugnant & I'll never do it - don't even consider following Sydney FC or the West Sydney Wanderers.

One thing I cannot lose - I'm Coventry born!

You and me are both in the same boat.
I cannot watch CCFC in the flesh but I do support them financially every year thru purchase of merchandise. (NOPM until return to Ricoh)
My main concentration now is Brisbane Broncos and I attend several live games at Suncorp, where the facilities are superb.
I do not watch AFL as I do not really understand the rules, but I do look out for Brisbane Lions results.
As for the A League, I support Brisbane Roar simply because they are located in Queensland. But, never get the same passion as following CCFC.

Coventry born- CCFC until they are wound up, if that happens its the end of Football for me.

The only 'other' side I could support is a Coventry side that is formed post liquidation.

That said, Weymouth have always been my 2nd team and will continue to be so.

My dad was a Burnley fan, that was his boyhood and nearest club before he moved down to Coventry in 1939. He as a Yorkshire man also had a soft spot for Huddersfield Town who were the top team in the country in the 30s. Took me to HR in 1960 and when Jimmy Hill arrived he became a big fan, season ticket holder, etc. etc.

Died in 1988 of cancer in the old Whitley Hospital. Always a bit of a wag but when told the inevitable prognosis by the doctor he said to him "at least I seen the city win the cup" brings a bit of a lump to the throat that.
So yes you can change teams, you just add another to your favourites list. Would I change, no, but there's a big difference nowadays, in the old mans days you could go to any ground, pay a couple of bob squeeze in and watch a game, today it is £25+ and as much as £50/£60 at some grounds, makes taking your nipper to a match difficult
