Coventry City XI (7 Viewers)

I was thinking that for a bit of fun, we should all pick our favourite Coventry City team based on the best players to have played in each position, post them on this thread, then I can add up the amount each player is picked and post an all-time Coventry City XI, as voted for by the SBT community. Each player must be picked in their rightful position though - So best goalkeeper, best right-back, best left-back etc etc.

I will leave this thread open for a few days before I put the final team, to enable as many people to put their team on as possible.

Here's my team:

GK - Steve Ogrizovic
RB - Roland Nilsson
LB - Stephen Warnock
CB - Mo Konjic
CB - Martin Cranie
RM - David Thompson
LM - Stephen Froggatt
CM - Mustapha Hadji
CM - Gary McAllister
ST - Dion Dublin
ST - Robbie Keane

Cheers
Scott:)

Unfortunately i'm only 23 mate, so didn't get to see the likes of Wallace, Hutchinson, Bennett etc which is a shame. What's your XI then?

Did the bench include Lee Fowler, Fabian Debec, Craig Pead, Steve Walsh and Chris Burchall?

It just makes me weep after years of mis-management - Derrick Robins would be turning in his grave if he could see what's happened to his beloved club!

Pearce is the missing link for me. I see you've picked him Scammer. I was tempted, but always feel that I'm influenced by his Forest and England form as opposed to when he was at the City, because if I'm honest I never predicted he would go on to be anything like the influential player that he became.

I know where you're coming from, Rob. Interesting that you put Warnock at LB - a loanee that we played mainly LM and quite rightly won 'Player of the Season'! Just shows that the LB position has always been a bit of an enigma for CCFC. I also considered Chris Cattlin and David Burrows, but will admit that Psycho's Forest/England career did influence me somewhat!

For sure it's been a problem. I was reluctant to put Fox in and never rated Burrows really. Could have selected Pearce or even Downs for nostalgic reasoniong. You're right about Warnock mostly being in midfield for us, but it was a chance of including a decent player who played well for us and is now always a LB - bit of a cop out really. Perhaps if we revisit this next year we will put Hussey in as he was the one player who I thought showed bags of potential under AT and couldn't understand how he had been overlooked in favour of O'Halloran. He gets forward, looks strong and can pick a pass.

The best I can remember seeing:

GK. Glazier
RB. Oakey
CB. Holton
CB. Gillespie
LB. McDonald
RM. Hadji
CM. Mortimer
CM. McAllister
LM. Hutchison
CF. Dublin
ST. Wallace

Subs:

GK. Ogrizovic
DF. Konic
MF. Yorath
MF. Carr
CF. Regis
ST. Keane

I reckon that team could give any side a run for their money.

Sorry that we're veering slightly off-topic here folks, but I can't be arsed to start a CCFC LB thread! I remember Burrows having a particularly strong spell under Strachan until he was absolutely torn to shreds by David Thompson - another player close to making my dream team! Chris Cattlin or 'Spider' was very consistent and under-rated in my opinion - he marked George Best out of the game on his debut. Fox reminded me of Pearce on his debut, but I don't think he's progressed as much as I thought he would. Downs worked really well under Sillett, linking up with David Smith and Cyrille Regis in those little triangles we used - I just don't think he was strong enough physically or in the air, and he was too left-footed.

I too was impressed with Hussey at the end of the season - he should get better under AT, especially with the diamond midfield.

PUSB!

If SISU would have stuck to their guns, that team could have got us into the play-offs.
