on the very odd occassion i've had to cover someone and do the night shift, then i would just sleep for a couple of hours before work and would be perfectly fine through the whole shift or i'd just unplug the phone and go home, but obviously get back to work before the next shift start :D

I work nights on a shift rota and it can be difficult. This is what I do. I go to bed late the night before and sleep in the morning as late as I can, then later have another couple of hours before work. A shower before I go and brushing my teeth help loads as it freshness me right up. I wear baggy comfortable clothes. I take in films to watch and music to listen to. Loads of munchies too just to snack on and keep me occupied. I drink loads of water to hydrate myself throughout the shift. I tend to avoid coffee after 2am or I can't sleep when I come home. If I'm struggling around the 4.30 time I have a fizzy drink.
Sorry didn't see this last night as you're probably tucked up in bed now lol.Hope this helps in future though. Do you work alone or in a team? can make a big difference.

Don't eat or drink anything with caffeine or sugar.. and whenever possible, make sure you go to a quiet room and rest your eyes.

Keep Regular Hours

Do your best to keep regular hours. It's often difficult to do. You work overnight and come home to find things that need your attention. When you deal with these things on a regular basis, without getting the proper sleep, your health can be affected and your work performance will diminish. Try coming home and staying up for a few hours before you go to sleep. This is the way people who work nine to five do it. Take care of anything you can during those few hours you're up, then go to bed and sleep your eight hours. Wake up with enough time for coffee, dinner, and whatever else people who work regular hours do. It's important that you maintain a regular schedule. Insist on it.

Staying Awake at Work

Bring something to work to entertain yourself. Staying awake on the night shift can be difficult, even if you are used to working those hours. Depending upon the job you do, you might want to consider bringing a book or a personal music player with you. If your job involves a lot of sitting around, your body will naturally slip into a relaxed state. Your mind may wander. Boredom will set in, and sleep won't be far behind. Unless your boss is very open-minded, sleeping on the job isn't recommended. Do what you can to occupy yourself, especially if your work doesn't keep you constantly busy.

I hope this helps. :)
