I'm starting a New Andy Thorn Thread! (1 Viewer)

Well a couple of threads yesterday went well off topic and ended up discussing my favourite (or should I say least favourite) subject.

Many will know my views on thorn. Inept beyond belief, defeatist, clueless, lacking any motivational ability and utterly incapable of communication. He is, beyond question, the worst manager this club has ever had born by the fact be is now unemployed and will never again be employed in football.

Yet, and yet the adulation he received by many on here is far more than given to Pressley and robins. Thorn wasn't a cheap option - he was a caretaker for 11 games and had a mediocre points total in that time. The fact is that if he them hadn't been given the job full time there would have been uproar. He was compared to jimmy hill, its the best football seen in decades, he's the man who can spot a player - a master talent.

The truth is with a real manager in charge we would probably have survived. A real manager had to be worth more than 10 points. The first half of the season completely finished us.

Can someone, anyone, explain how people were so badly wrong in their judgement regarding this utterly clueless individual.

Now people will say why dredge this up. Fair enough but this to me is worthy debate as I think in decades to come two things will be big talking points - how the club ended up in Northampton and how an unqualified inept buffoon managed to get away with being so popular when he was the worst manager in the clubs history.

I guess at least one affliction, therefore, you cannot be accused of is talking to yourself.

It's a little backward to see people who leap on everything Grendel ever says then complain about the same old shit.

To answer your post Grendel, I think the problem was the "honeymoon" period in his time as caretaker. I was at the 3-0 win at Portsmouth, and was very impressed with what I saw that night. Attacking, exciting football. And I'll admit I had high hopes for the following season. Then the summer came, and the players that entertained the sba at fratton park that night, were gone. When we lost 1-0 against Leicester on the opening day, and saw 5000 of their fans leaving happy, I knew then I'd made a very bad judgement on Thorn, and am happy to admit, I was very wrong.

That's a very sensible post - I wish many more realised the same.

I knew with him in charge we were done for. I've never admitted this bit I actually wanted us to lose games I watched as I new he had to be sacked to have a chance to survive. Fans had to turn against him - they never did. I think there was a coupe of games won around Christmas and I remember cursing and wishing we'd lost.

That's very honest. I did wish him to do well, but after a while lost faith in him. Not the team, just him. When stories circulated about AT being hungover at training etc, I wanted him gone.

He was a scout not a manager. Did Sisu not know that?
No experience so no chance of continued success.
A few good results at the right time for him but more luck than judgement.
Once Sisu depleted the squad this nice guy was out his depth.

Robins was lined up as manager - the fans saw thorn as an antithesis to sisu and automatically adapted a "love thorn hate sisu" stance. I guess its similar to how ACL and the council have got away with it really.

I will add my thoughts. He was a useless sack of shit. I said it all along....my view hasn't changed, and I honestly believe if we had had Robins or a.n.other we would have stayed up.

Still its amazing that so many people on here would rather talk about the same old shit all the time rather than a tongue in cheek review of the clown. Perhaps I should get back on topic and talk about fans at Sixfields......Noooooooooooooooooooo

Bit of a leap of faith to bring ACL/CCC into a Andy Thorn thread but I guess that was the whole point of this pointless thread.

If its pointless why comment? Go on admit it, its because I started it and you had to take a look....

To blame our relegation only on Andy Thorn is pretty fucking short sighted. The team was pretty poor that year.

Well yes moff that was partly the point of this. Now we get 10 threads a day saying the same thing - sisu lovers go to Sixfields and are spineless scabs - no one wants to talk football issues last or present any more.

this thread was started (apparently) as some threads went off topic and then you take it off topic. genius.

I think he was better than Reid who I rate as our worst ever manager. Just saying :D

I heard an interesting interview with Reid on Five Live a couple of years ago about life at Coventry. You'd have more sympathy if you'd heard it.

I actually thought Coleman was a worse manager than Thorn. Coleman had the players and money to get us back to the prem but fucked it up.
Thorn had the shit players and had to deal with Sisu withdrawing funds.
Im not a Thorn fan but felt at the time he was hard done by.

Thorn wasn't a manager; I think any football fan, and probably even himself, would admit that.

Yes he had a very good start as caretaker and predictably got the job full time.

But the fact that the bookies had him as favourite for most of the 'recruitment' stage shown that he was always going to get the job. Even if he lost every game as caretaker he was the cheap option; cheaper than any out of work manager would have been I say.

He was kept on too long, but he's gone now. Can we move on??
