Highest transfer fees received[edit]
The club's record sale came in August 2000, when they sold Robbie Keane to Inter Milan for £13 million. The sale of Chris Kirkland to Liverpool for £6 million in 2001 set a British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper and the sale of Phil Babb also to Liverpool in 1994 set a British record transfer fee for a defender

Player. To. Fee. Date
1 Robbie Keane Internazionale £13,000,000 1 August 2000
2 Craig Bellamy Newcastle United £6,000,000 25 June 2001
= John Hartson Celtic £6,000,000 2 August 2001
= Chris Kirkland Liverpool £6,000,000 31 August 2001
5 Dion Dublin Aston Villa £5,750,000 5 November 1998

Progression of record fee received[edit]
Date Player Sold to Fee
August 1981 Gary Bannister Sheffield Wednesday £100,000
February 1983 Garry Thompson West Bromwich Albion £225,000
July 1983 Gary Gillespie. Liverpool £325,000
July 1989 Steve Sedgley Tottenham Hotspur £750,000
March 1993 Kevin Gallacher Blackburn Rovers. £1,500,000
September 1994 Phil Babb Liverpool. £3,600,000
July 1998 Viorel Moldova Fenerbahçe £4,000,000
November 1998 Dion Dublin Aston Villa £5,750,000
August 2000 Robbie Keane. Internazionale £13,000,000

Saw this and it brought back a few memories, however I had forgotten we sold Hartson for £6m, it seems we got him for free, is that correct?

EDIT :There are some deliberate mistakes, see how many you can spot (thanks skybluejelly)

I think he was a free agent.
Wasn't he on a 15K per game contract?

More importantly on Sunday we are at home to Crawley and support for SP & his Staff and what he's trying to achieve is far, far more important than this thread IMHO. PUSB!

Feel free to suggest corrections, I just copied it from the web. I'll pretend the errors are deliberate, and that the thread is actually guess the missing bits.

Garry Collier was allegedly sold for £350,000 in 1976.

why don't you start a thread on Sundays "home" game then and stop wasting you're time on this "pointless" thread.

A thread, telling the majority of us something we all knew. Good work.

You aswell, what's your problem ? It's a thread about Coventry, looking back on some of our biggest departures,
If you don't like the thread go and post in yet another "ACL vs SISU / new stadium / Seppala / Sixfields thread.

Some iof us like looking back on our history

Other than the threads the other day I don't know about him, good was he? Why the allegedly, do you suspect skullduggery?

We paid that much for him and he played 2 games. Dropped after the first game and eventually went to the Portland timbers never playing in England again.

We paid £250,000 on Dave jones at the same time and he didn't do a lot better. £600,000 wasted at a time the club had no money. Very odd times.

Very strange the Gary Collier episode. He was an excellent player at Bristol City, a mainstay of a decent team yet here he only played a couple of games, his debut at Stoke we got thumped 4-0, played the next at home can't remember who against might have been Middlesbrough, I think we lost and never played again, luckily America were trying to get a professional soccer league going and clubs over there were splashing cash about and we got our money back for him. Back to record signings we have been involved in a few Bill Glazier at £35000 was a world record fee for a goalkeeper at the time and Allan Harris who was bought from Chelsea just after also for £35000 was some sort of record. We were also the first club to pay a £100000 for a full back when Noel Cantwell bought Wilf Smith from Sheffield Wednesday. Then Arsenal paid £200k for our Jeff Blockley, a British record for a centre half, I think Gary Gillespie's £325k to Liverpool was a record and Phil Babb's £4million move to Liverpool was definitely a British record for a defender. Robbie Keanes £6 million transfer from Wolves was a record, maybe a world record fee for a teenager. So we have had our moments , will they ever return ?

Jesus Wept, your post is a reminder to anyone who talks down our club. We were a big developing club in that era, Gary Collier et al. Massive potential, regular crowds in excess of 30,000. I get annoyed when our fans talk us down. Someone only has to get it right here, on and off the field and watch us go.
I've heard a story about Gary Collier. At haltime away at Liverpool (the history books say we lost 0-4) Jim Holton said in no uncertain terms he wasn't going to play in the same team as Collier. As you said, Collier never played again for us. Despite having a brilliant reputation on signing. These stories get told, I don't know if it is true, but I've heard it a few times.
Bringing it back to now, the insult of a proposed 12,500 stadium. How can any self respecting City fan even contemplate that. An insult.

Pretty much every team does, Man U sold Ronaldo and Beckham, Spurs sold Bale. As long as we get a decent price, and the money stays with the club, then I'd be happy with that.

No one tends to come in for our worst ones ;)

It's about the net effect on the team.

I'm still gutted we sold Gallagher. Roy fecking Wegerle in return!

I remember when we sold Kirkland that was a record for a goalkeeper at the time. I heard a rumour at the time that the bank took a large chunk of the money, and might even have been pushing for the sale. No idea if that's true it was just a rumour - sounded plausible though.

Carzy to think he only played 24 times for us. It felt like a lot more !

Gary Bannister is surely late 80's not early 80's isn't he?!

Bang on the money. 31,000 for a home game last season, and the muppets at Thursdays forum would be satisfied with a 12,500 fallacy.

If you really feel that way why do you not ever respond on football threads.

And the next time we are, If we are at home I will gladly buy you a beer until then you can buy your own as you obviously have no friends

Another thread ruined by a grade one knob.
