Coventry City have rejected a formal offer from Wolves for star striker Leon Clarke.
The Sky Blues League One rivals tabled a bid last night, hours after the 18-goal centre-forward handed in a transfer request.
City have rejected the cash offer which is understood to fall below the club’s valuation of the 28-year-old who is at the peak of his playing career, but have indicated to Wanderers that they may be interested in doing a cash-plus-player deal.
Wolves boss Kenny Jackett has a glut of strikers but is looking to freshen up his forward line up in the push for automatic promotion.
Including Nouha Dicko, who he signed from Wigan yesterday, Jackett has eight other centre-forwards on his books including Iceland international Bjorn Bergmann Sigurdarson and Scotland international Leigh Griffiths.
The others are Lee Evans, Jake Cassidy, Liam McAlinden, Eusebio Bancessi, Ibrahim Keita and Kevin Doyle.
However, Irishman Doyle’s £40,000-a-week wages would rule him out while Griffiths does not seem to fit into the Steven Pressley mould.
The City boss is looking for an experienced head to replace Clarke rather than a young talent, which would appear to rule out Cassidy and McAlinden, both of whom are only 20, 19-year-old Evans and fellow teenagers Bancessi and Keita who are yet to make a first team appearance.
Although Sigurdarson – the half brother of former City midfielder Bjarni Gudjonsson – is only 22, he has played almost 50 games for Wolves (scoring seven goals) and at 6ft 1 would appear the closest match to replace Clarke.
He cost Wanderers £2.4million when he arrived from Lillestrom in July 2012 and his agent said in November that he was keen to move on if he wasn’t getting regular first-team football.
