And the runner up is...?? (6 Viewers)

As mentioned on another thread, all City fans know the well worn stat of us having by far the longest record of all 92 clubs without a top 4 finish in any division since the 1960s. But which club has the second-longest record, after us?

Stato ahoy!

Rochdale got into the L2 playoffs in 2009 or 2010 I think...

Rotherham got promoted last season so can't be them either

i thought it was us and one of them that had the worst record, till as you say a few seasons ago. which then made us the worst

Sorry I've ballsed this up - it's a top 6 finish, not a top 4!!

Rotherham finished second last season.
Rochdale finished third in league one in 2010 after 41 years in Leugue 2 / Third Division / Division 4

I'm almost sure we're the only team left in the FL who haven't seen wembley since 1987, all other teams have in some way or other.

Now that is shit.

So let me get this straight:

1. We haven't finished top 6 in any division we've been in since the 1969-70 season which was 44 years ago. Who is next after us for this one?
2. The last time we played at Wembley was in 1987, which was 27 years ago. Are there any clubs that haven't played there longer than that?

I can't be arsed to research it, but I'd bet a fair few quid there are teams that have NEVER played a competitive game at Wembley....

....As for other clubs with a severe lack of top 6 finishes...no idea...

The answer to the Wembley question is Fulham, who last played there in the 1975 FA Cup final.

Teams never played at Wembley: Doncaster Rovers, Hartlepool Utd, Hull City, Lincoln City, Rochdale, Rushden & Diamonds, Walsall, Wrexham & Yeovil Town.

yet all have achieved a play-off or promotion since 87.

We are surely the only team left since 87 who have experienced F$£% all to celebrate?.

Very sure that Yeovil had a play-off final there a few years back, and Hull definitely have.

I wonder how many teams have only had 2 relegations in half a century?

Still id rather have been a Rochdale fan in the last 40 years.

Exactly. I am sure that plenty of clubs in the FL would love to swap histories with us. Hpw many of them never have and never will play in tr PL?

Which is great if you have been a fan for 40 years but for anyone who started supporting in 1988 or later (which is everyone under 26 for a start) there has been no success just a slow decline.

Interesting that you have to use Rochdale as a club who's supporters are worse off than ours. Despite holding the record for most seasons in the lowest division and most seasons without playing in the top two division in recent they have reached the play-offs three times, including a Wembley final and an automatic promotion, on the flip side they also suffered relegation. Compare that to our 2 relegations and a move out of the city.

Before you even consider that most Coventry fans would consider us a 'bigger' club and expect a greater level of success than a club such as Rochdale you could make an argument that their supporters have had more cause to celebrate in the last 25 years than us.

And of course there is still the chance that next season we could both be in the same division.

History is all well and good and of course something to be celebrated but as a fan you should always have the hope of better days ahead. At the start of the season you should have the feeling that this could be the year when something happens. How many Coventry fans still feel that way at the start of the season?

Thems the breaks though isnt it? Generally you become a fan of a club through location or family ties not because you want to support a team that wins stuff.

Im lucky that in my time ive seen us in the top flight and seen us play at Wembley twice. However unless you support one of the Big Boys then there's no guarantee of success.

An interesting fact is 52 out of 92 league clubs have won a trophy in the last 8 years, just goes to show how barren our sucess has been let alone getting a top 6 finish.

I don't buy that stat for a second....

...unless you are including those well know & keenly contested trophies for "best dressed physio" & "tallest animal mascot" etc.

It's bollocks. There are premier teams who haven't won a trophy in that time.
