Murphy - new contract offer (7 Viewers)

In view of his current form - despite the goals against column ;) - surely now that we're safe -( I know mathematically not, but effectively), we could start contract talks. I'm suspicious of delays:thinking about: (call me a cynic) and would think SP would want to get this nailed??

He seems the most likely to sign from his form and comments in the media. Seems a no brainer really. Unless Burge is a lot better than I thought.

Would have thought it'd depend on how stupid his current contract is (I'd imagine the answer to that is 'very'!) and how realistic he is in accepting he got lucky then, and he may as well sink back down to realism now.

And, of course, how far below 'realistic' we now have to go!

Incidentally on the radio, Jim Blyth was said not to rate Murphy in the slightest. I struggle to understand why, tbh. I know he's no De Gea, but he seems as good as we'd get for this level?

Agreed. He left Scunny pretty quick on relegation, but you'd hope that a couple of years older and in L1 will temper his expectations somewhat. I guess it depends what's on offer and from the rumours and hearing him speak, it doesn't look like anyone's circling. Unlike say Moussa or Christie.

SISU won't offer him a stupidly high contract to stay - but as long as they offer him something akin to an average league one keeper, he'd be well advised to grab it with both hands and stay. I do fear that someone else could step in an offer Franck a decent deal though...Forest could be one who would be keen

I'd assume we offered him a half-decent deal to turn his head. Used to buy into the 'well at least we're tight on wages now' until I heard one or two (from very good sources) that made my eyes water!

Indeed - but I suspect those days are done. Personally, I think not making him at least an offer at the moment is tantamount to an insult - even if it's not a very good offer we could at least be talking. I don't see this going well, I'm wondering if we're a bit closer to the edge financially than SISU are letting on and that's why they're not talking about contracts at the moment. Just a theory though, no evidence!

Don't think he'll re-sign I really don't

Depends on his options. I can't see any Championship clubs coming in and we're a decent shout for a play-off place next season, we might actually be someone's best option for a change.

Edit: Just remembered a factoid: I believe Murphy is the only player in the squad on a pre-Fisher contract. Make of that what you will.

Of course they are.

But then it boils down to the savings on his current contract that would happen naturally, v. his expectation being raised by his current contract and the club's expectations being lowered by... well, you know what ;)

FWIW I think he'll go. Even if we offer him par, I think he's had a good enough season to get some kind of offer from a more secure League One side, or even a lower level Championship side, for more than we'll offer him... even if what we offer him is reasonable.

We are?!?

Pre-season optimism has kicked in early this year.

(we've finished there or thereabouts last two seasons (touch wood) if you add on the 10 points, I don't see massive quality changes and in theory we have a bit of cash to bring someone in)

Bugger me, has someone else popped in and taken over your keyboard for this thread over the other?!?

That's my take on it too. On the plus side he's settled, so a reasonable offer might entice him, especially if it's for a few years. On the minus side if I was him I'd feel a little unloved at the moment by the way it's being handled. No one likes insecurity, even if it is an occupational risk.

Although the club hardly gives the impression of a settling place!

Although that said, Pressley bought into it. I often wonder just what the hell they said to him to make him so keen to take the job and stick with it. Not like he was out of work at the time or had a low stock.Posiively for contract renewals, somebody's either remarkably persuasive, or there really is a vision to buy into(!)

Absolutely. I can only think that SP thought that he was buying at the bottom of the cycle! ;)

I guess all of the talk about players might be somewhat of an irrelevance, simply holding onto Pressley should perhaps be the main priority. In truth, I'm not certain that we will.

Such as?

Personally I think Murph is replaceable - bawls out the defence every time we concede but doesn't inspire a huge amount of confidence as a giant in the box. He too often parries/punches instead of catching

Could be something as simple as total freedom to experiment .

IE;well let you imprint your total Ethos on the Club so long as you take the players we let you have ,significantly self generated ,which he's accustomed to and maybe just maybe attractive dollar.

Quoting would reveal my source, although it was about as good a source as you could get.

£8,000pw for a player you really wouldn't have dreamed of being on £8,000pw however!

PleaSe can you PM me the details? Promise I won't reveal it to anyone on SBT. Unless it is Roy o'Donovan.

our myopic controllers,
not owners,
because we are not allowed to know who they are,
will be suitably parsimonious, not for any other reason other than that of using us, (CCFC), as a debt pit,
that is only in my opinion, of course,
now, who's got that Cayman Islands tourist brochure ?

And what has that got to do with Joe Murphy?

Very true, media reports suggest that murphy, baker and Clarke were on an average of £8k per week (£416k), which is 20% of our £2m wage bill. How low will he go, given that the average wage in league one is c£1.5k per week and in the championship c£4k per week.

Without wanting to go full Fisher, you'd hope the introduction of FFP has made demands a little more realsistic.

Clarke was worth £8k/week IMO can't put a price on goals.

To be fair to Murphy, he signed a one year deal when Scunthorpe were promoted, giving Scunthorpe an option to increase the length of that deal had they stayed up. Of course his agent was also fully aware of the details of Westwood's contract and what his likely decision was to be.
For everything that's gone on around the club, the playing staff and management have always said they have been paid on time that is always a plus for the players. Had there been issues with being paid we would see the results detoriate very quickly on the pitch. You only have to look at the performances when the bonus structure was apparently changed...

Its worth noting that Baker has also said he wishes to finish his career at the club, even though he is fully aware that certain players are likely to leave on Bosmans and that we will have a fight on our hands to keep Wilson.

Given that it's all about money for any player, I suspect he may well get a better offer elsewhere. City are unlikely to offer much to Murphy or any one else out of contract, so it would not be difficult to tempt him away. Whatever happens, we are not likely to have anyone better than Murphy in goal next season. Burge is clearly seen as a capable and cost-effective replacement.

It is very possible that a Championship club could offer Murphy more money just to sit on the bench as an understudy, and since money talks he would be sure to accept such a deal.

Yes we would love Murphy to get another deal.
Is the money there with more cost cutting likely?
Will there be any contracts there next season?

He seems the most likely to sign from his form and comments in the media. Seems a no brainer really. Unless Burge is a lot better than I thought.

Won't next years FFP have a major bearing on player transfer fees, wages etc as 60% of naff all = naff all to pay out competitively ???

I'l be really suprised if Murphy goes. Chill out people, there is time yet for players to sign.

I would love him to stay, but as the club have said that they will not discuss contracts until the end of the season, doesn't that stance leave Murphy somewhat in the dark and if I were him I would at least be looking for potential employers for the next season if a deal cannot be done with us.
