Academy graduate says he will weigh up his future away from Sky Blues over the summer

Coventry City's Cyrus ChristieCyrus Christie insists he hasn’t made a firm decision about his future but admits he’s got to make the most of his situation and progress his career at a higher level if the opportunity presents itself this summer.

The Cov Kid was the subject of a formal bid from Mark Robins’s Huddersfield last August and linked with Bolton and Sunderland in the January transfer window, as well as Spurs prior to that.

City offered the Academy graduate a new deal earlier this season but he has chosen to run his contract down to see what other offers come in.

“Nothing has been decided yet,” said the 21-year-old, whom manager Steven Pressley admitted would be difficult to keep if the Sky Blues remained in League One rather than gaining promotion.

“I have got the summer to weigh things up.”

City’s on-going situation playing away from the Ricoh Arena in front of paltry crowds at Northampton, and the prospect of the playing budget being reduced again this summer, clearly have a bearing on his decision.

“I need to sit down and have a talk and clarify the future of the club because it’s not the most ideal situation at the minute,” said the defender, for whom City will get a compensation fee for because of his age.

“These things happen in football. I’m not going to beat about the bush and say I’m going to stay, but anything can change.

“I’d love to stay but I also want to play at the highest level and when opportunities come around sometimes you have to take them because they don’t always come back round again.”

He added: “Hopefully people will recognise I have done a good job for the club over the last three years I have played.

"I can’t thank the fans enough for all their support in the 120 odd games or so I have played.

"It has been a fantastic experience with a lot of ups and downs but it’s been a great character building lesson for me and the rest of the lads, and I just want to thank the fans for all their support for me, which has been fantastic.”

That support, he admits, has wavered in some quarters in recent months.

“I have come in for a bit of stick recently,” he said.

Asked if he feels that’s down to a dip in form or the prospect of him leaving, he added: “A bit of both.

“With the situation I am in some change their tune with me a bit. Most of the fans have been great but some have cast doubt over me and my performances, but I have been playing well and doing a job for the team and that’s all that matters.”

He certainly couldn’t be accused of not being fully committed against Wolves when he threw himself into several full blooded challenges.

“I have to give 110 per cent,” he said.

“I’m still under contract until the end of June and it’s not in my character to pull out of challenges or not give my all for the club.

“I was here when the club were relegated from the Championship, even though I was injured for the last few months, and it wasn’t good to see and we didn’t want to drop down again.

“We’re here at Northampton, which is not the greatest, and it would have been even worse if we’d gone down.

“I was never going to jeopardise the club’s or players’ futures. I grew up with half the lads in the team so I always give everything, and I will continue to do so while I’m here.”

Christie certainly hopes to chalk up one more appearance for his home town club when they travel to Bramall Lane on Saturday.

“It will be a great atmosphere and I am sure we’ll take a big crowd,” said the marauding full-back.

“We’re safe, which is a massive relief, and we’ll all be relaxed and it should be a good game of football.

“Hopefully some of the younger lads will get the chance to showcase what they are about for next season and show the gaffer what they can do.”

What a shock as he's 'out-of-contract'?

What a shock. A Coventry kid don't want to play for his own club. Just can't understand why :thinking about:

Is it cos we're shit and (just about) in the 3rd division & playing in a 4th division dump?

....Or is it cos bigger better clubs are willing to make him a millionaire overnight and will offer him a contract he could only dream of at City?

My guess......and its only a guess mind.....its probably a bit of both. :D

He wants to stay but the contract offer he received from the club was pretty much what he's on now, so it has left him with no option.
The club want to cash in on him and tried off-loading him in January but he refused to move.
(From the horses mouth).

Well...I don't blame him....I wouldn't want to move to uddersfield when there are potentially far bigger clubs interested....

Good luck to him. He's done well for City....I personally think he's a little over-rated, but would love a club like spurs or sunderland to sign him on £20K per week for 3-5 years only to discover what I already suspect.....

Good luck Cyrus.

Sheffers moved as our owners wanted to cash in on him. Christie won't be offered much money as our income is so low with playing in Northampton. Bit different this time.

@ RFC....Even bigger shock....HE'S not out of contract........................................Yet!

I'd love to know what point you are failing to make here. Are you saying he's not out of contract in the summer? Explain yourself. Why is he thick for saying it's a 'shock' that he's looking to leave?

If this is true (and pardon my inability to take internet rumours as gospel) then you can hardly blame him.

For what its worth, I think some of the stick directed towards him has been a bit harsh this season and only really ramped up when it was pretty much confirmed he wasn't staying.

I remember some bloke next to me at Leyton Orient away, telling everyone who would listen to him that "when he's playing like this, why keep him". He was the best player on the pitch for us that night and our only real attacking threat as that outlet on the right.

Obviously not the finished article but good luck to him. Always seemed a likeable lad and pretty grounded.

I personally could not give a fuck, let the c**t go sit on the bench somewhere else with more money in his account and no future for a second rate full back

Yay! Savosdad is back! Remember that time you bottled a bet with me for charity about winning another game all season (before we went on to win 3 more). You were so adamant we wouldn't as well. You're the exact kind of fan who would put me off going to games if I had to sit next to you, 2the constant whinger".

Did you complain about the defending in the 6-2 win last ever game at Highfield Road.

Cheer up mate, worse things happen at Sea.

"Fuck off son, you should've got an A. You might as well give up and sign on now, you'll make nothing of yourself in life you nauseating little twat."

Yes but Sheffers was in huge demand, and went to a club that had just been relegated from the Premiership and went for huge personal terms. Cyrus will no doubt go to a lower championship team for lower championship wages because it has greater prospects and resources than a lower Div 1 team playing to 1,600 fans. Yes its about money but SISU have ensured that we don't have the budget to compete to keep him.

If he thinks he can play football at a higher level then good luck to him.

Personally I think he's overrated. Be interesting to see Aaron Phillips at RB next season.
