I'm all for giving the lad a chance - but I think it's fair enough to point out that it is a long shot, given the level he's coming from, which is a fair way down the non-league pyramid.

However I can think of another one from non-league who had a pretty decent professional career. Was in his early twenties when he signed for us from Enfield. Any takers?

And one more. Another striker. Started at Newcastle Blue Star, broke into the league with Wrexham from where we signed him, scored a few for us, and then was stuck out in wide midfield despite never, ever being a midfielder (we seem to do that a lot). Looked older than he was. :) Anyone?

Andy Morrell - decent player.

Furlong and Morrell, indeed. Didn't take long!

I thought they were both half-decent players - in fact if I remember correctly, they were both strikers whom we attempted to convert into wide midfield players. Very odd, particularly for Morrell, who I thought was a pretty good finisher, but didn't exactly have blistering pace or a bagful of tricks. Ho hum, what do I know.

Kerry Dixon, Vinnie Jones, Les Ferdinand, Kevin Phillips and Stan Collymore all came from non league clubs.

So there are some gems to be found.

And Furlong was subsequently sold to Watford for £250k.
He scored freely for them and iirc, they sold him for £1m to Chelsea.
Not bad for a non-league player

Think we must agree...there are lots of examples of decent non-league players we've bought.

Didn't we sign the Flying Postman from Swansea?
Anyway, once saw Eddie McGoldrick play for Ireland against Denmark ina WC qualifier (marking Brian Laudrup). Totally out of his depth - he started at Kettering Town by the way

Lets hope he comes up trumps on this one, its risky but i doubt its a random name they have plucked out of the air in the hope he comes good. (although we have clearly done this many a time!!)

I agree. So why not list some decent examples rather than Sean Flynn? I agree though Busst was OK.

I've got no issue with looking at non-league as a source of unrecognised playing talent & potential.

In fact ISTR Fisher (or Waggot maybe) saying this was where the club would be looking.

However, it is just one source of many..

There are but these were all by 21 I believe and it seems to me that scouting is probably alot more comprehensive these days than it used to be, so the chance of someone not being spotted by 27 it's gotta be very rare indeed.

for every stuart Pearce there are a lot more culpins & Bussts, hopefully he will be another Ian wright but the chances are that he will fail to cut it at a significantly higher level.

You mean Sean Flynn premier league scorer, and Dave Busst who was marking Eric Cantona on the day of his terrible injury.

Im with you ccfcway, I dont get the criticism of them either, nor of a player who is yet to even wear the shirt.

And Telfer played Champions League football.

Busst was ok but Flynn was pretty poor in MY opinion.
