A bit concerned about Murphy's ability. (2 Viewers)

Yet another example of City fans finding a player to pick on. I have seen all the games bar Tuesday night and in my opinion Murphy is a good keeper. Certainly i find him very good at commanding his area on crosses. At Bury he saved us on at least 5 occassions with excellent stops which avoided a cricket score. In my opinion we are suffering from having 2 relative novices at full back and a full back at centre back. Hussey and Christie whilst both good players are not that good defensively and ive lost count of the amount of times Hussey is done for pace by wingers. All players make mistakes, take Jutkiewicz as a prime example. He had 2 great chances to score on Tuesday night and missed them both... yet i dont hear an outcry from fans on here saying he is crap. But then fans have a 'hero' who is untouchable and this year it is an average championship striker who has a poor goals return and but for unquestionable hard work doesnt offer a lot to an already weak forward line. I dont expect this to change and Murphy will be constantly compared to Westwood all season but its things like this that partly show why we cant attract decent players as the fans lynch them after a handful of games in which they didnt play poorly at all.

Think its early days and give the guy a chance - he has walked into a threadbare team to follow on from someone many felt to be a skyblue legend - to some degree whatever he does isnt going to be good enough.

Got to disagree Tankie I think he is adequate at this level - what he isnt is a straight swap for Westwoods talents, but then KW was regarded as the best in the division by many so not likely to be able to step in those shoes.

Even KW made mistakes, had his faults and gaps in technique..... last season he fell short of the previous ones for us and there were mistakes. There are areas that Murphy maybe is more aware than KW, for instance his distribution of the ball from his hands. Shot stopping KW was head and shoulders above not only Murphy but also every other keeper in this division - we have been spoilt in that respect.

Frankly though given the team in front of Murphy I am not surprised that there may be an element of uncertainty in his play. Little disappointed that after 4 games there are calls for him to be replaced, but guess thats the general air of intolerance we find ourselves in because of the mess at the club.

Give him support and time

I think we should get behind all the players, we already in the smelly stuff at the moment and don't need to be getting on the players backs. Everyone is entitled to their opinion I know but the plain truth is the players we have is all we got to work with at the moment.
I am hopeful, just like every City fan I guess that things will get better on and off the pitch, yeah things might look bleak at the moment but nobody ever won or got relegated after just 3 games. It's a marathon not a sprint.

I still cant believe some people did not realise the value of having Westwood and often people scoffed at how many points he saved us.

Murphy I reckon is decent enough, however Westwood is / was a different level and influenced results, with a regularity that I dont think Murphy will achieve.

He's not a kid, he doesn't need time. He's made mistakes that have cost us games and I have every right to jump on his back.

I don't rate him and it's up to him to make me think any different.

I don't really rate you either, but hey.....

I am a keeper myself and have been for over 30 years. Have a lot of mates in sunny Scunny. Saw him play a few times. Never saw him have a bad game whilst he was with them. A GK plays better when he knows his defence. A GK plays better when he trusts his defence. He don't even know his defence or trust them yet. He is a good shot stopper. He commands his area well. As said before is de Gea crap now? Westwood is a good GK. Not a great GK. Give him a chance. Don't get on his back. That is the last thing we need at the moment. Half a team of kids and so called fans making them nervous. The team is pulling together and working as a team should. We need to pull together and get behind them whatever happens. If you got told you are shite all the time it would not be long before you became shite.

Perhaps the point is that we ever had to rely on having a very good keeper in the first place to gain us points and that folk panic when the keeper makes an error .............. says a lot about how we rate the outfield squad

As thread starter, I originally stated that some of Murphys actions worry me. I then went on to say that perhaps Oggy should be watching him closely and picking up on his "scarey" saves - e.g. pushing shots away instead of collecting comfortably - This would hopefully in turn, improve his game. I never once said that I thought he was crap. It's the old "Chinese Whispers" again.

I saw Westwood make mistakes frequently yet people chose not to highlight them as in the main he was a good keeper, still though in my opinion, vastly over rated.

Murphy is about as good as we are going to get with the current financial predicament the club finds itself in. Unless those moaning about Murphy can suggest some realistic replacements who will play for small wages and be equally as good.

who would you have preferred Tankie?

Hello Andy,
I cannot pluck a name out of the air, there must be several who would foot the bill.
But would have liked one based on ability, rather than "How cheap can we get one, the jersey fits doesn't it, he's big, and got two legs, hasn't he?" KInd of mind set that Sisu are operating under at the present time, as far as coaching the errors out of his technique, it may be possible in a young keeper, but trying to correct technical shortfall in a mature, experienced one, could be compared with teaching an old Dog new tricks.
my response is only my opinion, and i'm sure that others will Disagree with my somewhat negative appraisal of our new player.
I have to confess, that I'm still gutted at the loss of Who'm I considered, the best goalie I'd seen in our shit, so whoever, replaced him, would have a hard time convincing me, "A biased and unfair assessment" Yeah, you're probably right. only time will tell....
Respect, to all opinion..tankie

I know this is a bit late in the day and all that, but i dont think we should have released Quirke. He looked good to me.

We were spoilt with Keiren Westwood who was solely responsible for saving us approximately 10 points if not more a season. Makes the whole end of the Preston away game last season even more ludicrous as I feel very few City fans appreciated how talented a keeper he really was. To make matters worse, he is now warming Sunderlands bench.

I still think its criminal that he didn't get player of the season in his first season at the club. Gunnar only won it because he had a facebook page and accepted Cov fans friend requests. Pathetic.

As an ex-goalie myself, I tend to take notice of goalkeepers during play - how they position themselves, the way they control defenders etc - but recently, I have become concerned with the strange behaviour during play, of Murphy. In the Birmingham game, (which I watched live via a stream), he parried one shot which he could easily have kept hold of. Even the commentator said it was a "camera" save, meaning a bit of a showboat. However, the ball could have gone anywhere. As it was, it went out for a corner. Then last night (reading reports) it seems that both Palace's goals were the result of the ball being "parried out" by Murphy.
Has he got a problem with keeping hold of the ball? I think Oggy needs to get a grip with his coaching or we will be letting in far too many silly goals in future. :(

you cant go judgeing people unless you played at his level i think he's done very well for us sure he made a few mistakes who doesn't and you can talk your not a pro

Of course you can judge somebody. You don't have to have been a pro to be able to tell what is wrong. He finds it hard to catch sometimes, that is the same if you are in the Championship or over the park ;)

In fact I would say it is worse over the park on a Sunday, as you would usually have 2 meatheads still drunk trying to snap your legs!
