Cyrus Christie - I need to know. (11 Viewers)

Hi Guys,

Friendly Derby fan here with a quick question about our new boy, Cyrus Christie.

Right, the one thing I cannot understand with Christie is why nothing more was made of him whilst playing at Coventry in League One? He's been absolutely outstanding since joining us and has probably been our best player in more than half our games - if not 2/3rds of our games. He's making Andre Wisdom look somewhat average at the minute and I just don't get it.

He doesn't seem to lack anything. I know there was questions over his defensive ability but he's marked every competitor out the game and ran them into the ground doing so. He just doesn't seem to stop either, he's got an huge engine.

So, back to my question, what's different? How come he wasn't held up with a high reputation here... I need to know for my sanity.

He left our club so he is said to be shit by many of our supporters. Usual thing.

He is and always has been one hell of a player. Brilliant going forward and more than adequate when defending.

He had some great games for us ..but was part of a very weak defence.. That was often left exposed .i think he had made his mind up to leave our sack of crap owners and some of the fans felt let down .. He obviously feels confident going toward at Derby knowing that keogh is there to cover for him

Was apparently being looked at by premier clubs at one stage, Spurs was the main name mentioned. His form did dip part way through last season especially defensively. Overall I am not surprised at what he's achieving but he needs to maintain it right through the season. He is still young and learning.

He was poor in his last season here, clearly didn't want to be here. The other seasons he was pretty good.

I think it's a case of maturing as a player and playing somewhere where he enjoys his football is getting the best out of him.

I'd say it's down to knowing you're leaving with his situation with us. Brilliant player IMO, but once your know you've got a deal arranged, I imagine it's hard to put 100% into the club your at. Injuries etc...

All I will say for definite, is you have a player on a free (plus compensation) that will either help take you to the top of championship or up to lower premier league, so good luck to you and Cyrus :)

The last season he wasn't interested.

Always very athletic but his final ball wasn't very good, always said if he learnt to cross he would be great but so many times he would go on a great run and then put it out for a goal kick :(

I think it's the classic case of a good player being part of a average team, in particular a poor back 4, who's game is naturally lifted by playing with better players. He was left exposed more often than not as he was our main attacking outlet down the right and we didn't really have the players in terms of pace/defensive ability to cover for him when the oppo broke.

Always thought he was more an athlete than a footballer - physically excellent but technically lacking (crossing springs to mind).

Can imagine that in a good Derby side, some proper coaching and training with better players is what has caused his sudden improvement. The epitomy of a modern full back and glad to see him doing well for you.

Got all the attributes to make a very good player. Probably had too much too quick thrust on him at CCFC, due to lack of depth. Good luck to him.

The irony is he'd have probably been better suited to this season's system than last...

Derby have got in a 21 year old player who has already played over 100 first team games rather than having to loan a player from a prem team with no first team experience.

If they need anymore players we have a young lad named Jordan Clarke who is very versatile!

He was poor here and is good there probably because he has good players around him with you and crappy defenders around him with us.

Last few months of the season he wasn't really trying, his crossing was very poor but still a young lad a great athelete and wxpect him to play in the PL eventually

Funny we had another good player here who everyone slagged of got rid of him and he would be by far our best midfield player this season............

Oh yes he was our captain too.

Sounds like what I pretty much expected. I'll be honest, when I heard we was signing him I was sceptical to how he would fill in for Wisdom, who was very good for us. As the season has gone on, he's pretty much been in the top three players in every game he has played - he's been that good for us. He's tasked with dominating the whole right side at Derby as we've decided to move our right winger into a more free roaming role and it's worked well. He's got the engine to do that job sublimely. I think it helps that he's come into a pretty much settled side and he's had a full summer to integrate into our system and learn the players around him too.

I hope he can keep it up and win the POTY trophy, if the voting was tomorrow I'd guess he'd have 80% of the votes so hopefully his standards wont drop, but it's a long hard season.

Good luck for the rest of the season chaps, I will keep an eye out for your results.

We also have this great player called Danny Swanson .. You might want to put a cheeky bid in for him

You can't say that!

Well not without telling them that's he's a really strapping, big strong lad, with incredible muscles, who puts fear into the opposition and who tackles like an all in wrestler and that he never ever gets knocked off the ball at all, ever.

Very good player for us. Our biggest attacking threat and our 'x factor'. However, after getting into our first team at 17 yr old, fans got complacent and he soon worked out that he was too good for us and almost stopped trying and waited for a move to another club (had already attracted many clubs). Last 6 months here; he wasn't interested and fan's high opinion of him was warped, due to his lack of commitment and our resignation to his inevitable departure

He is a good player and was destined for greater things, his final ball needed work but his physical attributes were always first class. Sadly I don't think with the deal he signed for you on we will have any type of sell on clause.

I think he was genuine :pointlaugh:

Although tbf, he surely knows the answer. Well run club, good players in his team, positive/potential club, looking up rather than down etc, etc, etc....

He won young player of the year, season before last so that in its self tells you something, and I had the pleasure of giving him his trophy.
ive seen Cyrus play since 6/7 year old at London Road Lions and he always stood out in a crop of excellent players, lovely lad and very level headed.

Do agree that his last season with us he wasn't on it, but by that stage he was always leaving, probably trying not to pick up a bad injury, good luck Cryus nice to see a COV kid doing so well !

To be honest he started all 3 seasons for us pretty well, and then faded. Will be interesting to see if that pattern continues. Hope not though, seems a decent kid.

Cyrus Christie... Don't get me wrong Cyrus is a very good athlete, the lad has glimpses last season that he could produce real quality at RWB, however it was just glimpses after his agent turned his head, Cyrus is athletic, strong, quick and is agile to change direction at speed, many Cov fans will always be critical of his final ball, unfortunately I would have to say that Cyrus got into very good positions many times however he never produced.

The way I always looked at Cyrus was that all the Groundwork is there for a decent Wing Back however Christie needed to improve on decision making with the final ball, whether to cut inside or not, to get to the byline instead of smashing in a cross, all these things you can learn through experience and truth be told with Steve McLaren Cyrus is probably in the best place to learn.

soon as it dawned on certain cov fans he was leaving they decided to hate him

I know Cyrus and his family. He was happy here and those saying his agent turned his head don't know what they are talking about, our owners saw money to be made out of him and spent virtually all last season trying to get him moved on for cash, that is when his agent got involved and advised him to wait until the summer which they did. He was part of a poor defence last season which for some reason our manager neglected, the season before he was out a long time due to an ankle injury, remember we are talking about a young kid at that time not a seasoned pro. He has moved to a proper manager who wherever he is gets the best out of his players at club level. I think you have a potential diamond there but I know he is being watched by higher level clubs and Harry Redknapp has personally watched atleast once. His agent has a number of young London based players on his books at Arsenal, Chelsea, QPR. He will play international football imo. and he will make the move to premiership football, I hope with Derby. We have strange fans here who will be hoping and praying he fails, he won't.
