Wasps: Good For The City? (5 Viewers)

A lot of Coventry City fans, including myself, are annoyed that Wasps have bought the Ricoh. This situation could have easily been avoided if there was communication and understanding between ACL, the Council and SISU. But this is the hand we've been dealt and now we gotta live with it. But i like to think of myself as a 'Glass Half Full' kinda guy. So although it causes problems for CCFC, it could generate a lot of income for the local community. Businesses in Foleshill and Longford will get a much needed boost and rugby fans who dont usually see top class rugby played in the city can now get their fix of Premiership action. But i was wondering if you guys agree? For this week's Cooks Question, i want to know, Is the move good for the city or are the consequences for Cov City just too severe? If you dont want your answer read out on the radio show, please say so. If you have an opinion on anything brought up on the show, phone me in the studio on 02476224761. Sports Lounge kicks off at 10AM Thursday so tune in if you can. I also started by new Breakfast show, Good Morning Hillfields this week, so if you wanna have a listen, GMH is on at 7am Tuesday Mornings. Thanks again for your amazing contribution

Find It For Less dot co dot uk - the best place to buy things for cheap online thinks it is a bad move.

Can you read that out? ;)

A lot of posters seem to be happy with it because it spites SISU. What they forget is that it will have a severe effect on the club in the long-term, especially as sisu won't be here forever...also, who is going to want to buy a league 1 club paying rent to a franchise rugby club? We have the most apathetic fans and the worst owners in the country. There is no way Leeds or Pompey fans would have put up with sisu, ccc and Wasps.

Agreed. Lets hope that a Prem League football team move to Cov soon as well so we can get our fix of premiership action

Or just half hour up the road to watch Leicester Tigers?

A lot of people know it is bad for CCFC. However they understand why the decision was made. Wasps and CCFC is best for the city.
CCFC and no wasps would have been fine. However CCFC was adamant is was going.
Wasps to replace CCFC is making the best out of a bad situation

A lot of people understand it, that doesn't mean they're happy with it.

To answer the OP question then yes it's good for Coventry if WASP are here and CCFC are here. The problem is one of those needs far more money to sustain it than the other, they need their own stadium and income streams not just a rental pitch deal.
If CCFC could gets their hands on income from the stadium 365 days a year then it may have a future there but even then you would expect them to up sticks and build elsewhere when they needed it, such as returning to the premiership. They won't want to share the bonanza of premier leagues receipts with WASP will they? As I said elsewhere the council did not give due thought to the process did they?

Surely with PL crowds of 25,000 and tv revenues it won't matter that Wasps are taking most the ACL profits ?

The CCC wanted shut of a "white elephant"--sisu repeatedly said they where building there own stadium
and therefore not interested in the Ricoh.

CCFC fans are left holding both sisu & CCC/Higgs in disdain for leaving us up the creek without a paddle.

Really? Swansea's turnovers the other season was £67m of which £6m revenues generated from the stadium. Do you think taking 10% from a business wouldn't matter or affect it?

Where did you get the £6M figure From?

Last year they made £75m from the playing side alone , quick internet search show that they made the biggest profit, another quick search puts them in the top 50 richest clubs. But in an article for the local press they said.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins said in September that Swansea were "miles behind" most of their rivals in terms of commercial income

"One of the big things we need to do if we are to develop as a club, and try our best to compete with the best teams, is find a way of growing commercially," Jenkins told the South Wales Evening Post

" At the moment, the income levels we have are basically just linked to the football side of things - television revenue and that sort of thing

"The only other way we have got to bring money in is trading players.
"They are the only tools we can use to make money, so the commercial aspect is something we have to look at.
"We have to find ways of bringing in extra income

Not bad for a club that does not own its own ground and shares with a rugby team that screw the pitch so much that it forces Swansea City to play Hoof Ball.

And what exactly would their wonderful fans have done about it? Written a strongly worded letter? Run on the pitch and pick up a lifetime ban?

It's the stadium management company accounts, they may only own 33% but they take all of their income from it:

I'd used this link. http://www.swanseacity.net/news/article/accounts-may-3013-1146109.aspx

Yes they made a lot of profit from player transfers that year.

The council did not give due thought to the process? Sorry? If SISU needed the incomes you refer to, they should have bought them candidly; instead of the pantomime of distressing ACL and their fruitless and costly litigation

Had they been offered at the same price that Wasps got them for I imagine they would have bought them a long time ago.

Ah the good old council, its a good job they love the club otherwise we'd be truly fucked.

They did offer them for £24 million didn't they?

Some of them say they do love CCFC
E.g. Mutton and Lucas ( both council leaders ) and we are still fucked. Leads me to think that the owners may have more to do with our demise than ex landlords.

Yep. Both have spent years going to matches for no reason.

You might not like the decisions they've made but you of all people have no right to question someone's loyalty as a fan, and that includes council leaders.

I have never Met Lucas, but I have had dealings with Mutton. He seemed passionate about CCFC and had no reason to put on an act about that in our conversation. So, I would say that it is an incredible achievement by SISU ( in the negative Sense ) to turn the council into supporters of a Wycombe based Rugby Club. I don't think Mutton even new what Wasps Rugby was when I met him. Now we're getting a bloody great Wasp on our stadium. Yes. I am angry, but mainly with the owners who have steered us up shit creek and seem to have forgotten the paddle.

The fact is that there are very few people that can have an influence on a football team directly with their actions. The fact is that these two, along with SISU, Hoffman, Elliott, McGinnity, Richardson and every other cronie around on their respective watches have failed the club.

True, although the council is secondary. The owners are primarily responsible for our demise. The present owners have had 7 years to stop the slide. They haven't- they have increased the Speed of our decline and should be pilloried for this.

So they can't be full of shit and go to football matches?

It always does touch a nerve with some when you say anything bad (well saying they are full of shit isn't that bad is it?) ;)

Your saying they are full of shit in response to the comment that they are both city fans.

Unless you have become a believer in the "superfan" class of city supporter then you shouldnt really question their status of being a fan.

Nothing wrong with questioning the decisions any fan takes (including council leaders) but to question whether someone is a "real fan" or not is wrong.

No, I am a believer in that they are full of shit in general. I don't doubt they are fans of CCFC, but I do believe they over egged it for PR before fucking the club over with the "we stand on the terraces next to you, we live next door to you in the street" bollocks.

Don't get me wrong, SISU have also screwed the club. They haven't been gushing about how much they love it though just before doing it.

The main difference is you can see why the council did what they did.
Why the bloody hell did SISU keep pushing and not bid when the council warned them their was a deadline beyond which other offers would be considered.
I get the logic why the council screwed the club. I don't get the logic why SISU did it like shooting your own foot.

Wasnt Joy quoted in the Les Reid interview in the CT refering to the club as her "beloved Sky Bkues"? While continuing to screw the club over.
