The answer is yes. Im sure loads of supporters think they are hard done by but I think we are the biggest mess of a club at the minute. I actually read that Blackpool were after Kirkland yesterday and thought surely we are a more attractive proposition than Blackpool... I was undecided.

I have had this discussion before, there is no way Portsmouth are a club more difficult to support than us. They won the FA Cup in 2008 and made the final in 2010. We haven't come close to that in recent history.

I suppose something like this is difficult to quantify. Off the pitch we are currently quite easily the worst club to support in the league, and have been for around 15 years now. However that hasn't always been the case, so you would struggle on that basis to say worst club in history (however reword to recent history and you would be right).
On the pitch, well there are a couple of teams currently worse than us, so in terms of recent history were not the worst in recent history. However long term there might be something in that. If you were to look back across the club's 132 year history, I would bet that only around 15-20 seasons in that time could be classed as a decent season. On this basis I reckon we must be one of the worst teams in football to support. The sheer lack of victories for this club, dating right back to 1883, is very depressing.

Previous owners were bad, but did they or did they not give us better squads to watch?
Did they ever put us down to our lowest league position since the 60's?

Depends on what period you focus on.
On the one hand we haven't had a top 6 finish in any league since 1970 (the only team in the FL that can 'boast' such an unachievement), have surely the worst owners in the country, and we rent our stadium off an egg-chasing franchise.
On the other hand we have spent 34 of the last 48 years years in the top flight (how many teams can match that?), obviously we won the FA Cup, and have had 2 LC semi finals. We have also been lucky enough in the last 20 years to witness the likes of McAllister, Dublin, Huckerby, Hadji, Keane and many many other top players in sky blue.
I guess it depends on what timescale we're talking about. The title says 'in history' and I wouldn't agree that we're the worst team to support in history.

Pre-2001 - nowhere close.

If you are a fan under 20 then we are putting in a challenge on the worst club to support.
But if you are banging on the door of 50 and can remember Wallace, Hutchinson, Regis, George and John, Speedie, Keane et al then no, there are are worse clubs.
However, sadly the clubs best days seem to be in the past.

To the OP, worst in the FL, yes. But as others have mentioned, it's worse if you're a Stockport, Grimsby, Maidstone etc fan.

Or it highlights our past glories of climbing up the divisions. I'm proud of our club's history and would never swap it with the other teams in this league.
If you knew nothing about football and came on this forum, you'd think that we have been in the lower leagues forever.

Other clubs (Pompey, Luton, Blackpool - ongoing) have had a decade or so of piss poor luck & bad management passing down through the FL like like a dodgy kebab but Coventry City FC has tormented, teased, constantly disappointed over a longer period of time that any other club. The Sky Blues last promotion was in 1967, nearly FIFTY years ago. One FA Cup win gave the city & fans hope which was then cruelly purged from us 2 years later by who? Sutton! Who the hell were they? Now they are on the list of the greatest Cup upsets by beating the City.
We supporters are the equivalent of those self flagellation religious types in the Philipines. We love the pain & think that we deserve it. We have been continually deceived by directors who taunted us 'by doing the right thing for the club' & then have fleeced the club for everything & moved offshore until this "Spectre" (see James Bond villains) like SiSu, an organisation with no interest or experience have taken over & have attempted 'financial demand with menaces' of the city of Coventry. Do we have a transfer policy - or do we just for the cheapest player available. Doesn't matter if he's any good.
If weren't not the hardest club in the UK to support, then we have set the bar pretty damn high for any other club who wants the title.

Until I can be confident that my $ is not just propping up a hedge funds business interests and that each Cent also spent in and around the ground on a matchday is genuinely helping to improve the football club on the playing front then yes we are a very hard club to support, it's as simple as that.

I think there are many clubs who would vouch for this title. Portmouth spent beyond their means and deserved what they got however through fan power are coming out the other end. Wimbledon were blasted out of existance but again proved that they can be reborn. Clubs like Chester who went out of existance are other examples of how bad it can actually get.
Other clubs like Leeds, Hartlepool, Tranmere who are spiralling out of control and dropping through leagues like a bad penny. Finally you only have to look at the club north of the border, now that is a fall from grace.....
