However, this club is unique in that it is the only club not to have a relationship with their council. If we cannot play in Coventry, then we have to play outside.

Am I missing the obvious, that the incentive (for all parties!) should be for both club and council to rebuild a relationship?!?

Frgetting about rights or wrongs, why on earth is there a seeming acceptance from all parties on sides of the divide that this is how it is?

Because they are a bunch of stubborn pig-headed egotistical bastards?
But yes, they should be building bridges not trenches. Perhaps the lovely council could offer an olive branch?

tbf, the closest in those minutes is Kevin Maton being disappointed not to be involved in discussions to date.

Well... involve him. Make a solution.

A lot has been quoted from the Stadium Forum meeting, but this is to me the potentially most important part:

Cllr Maton confirmed that he was disappointed he had not been involved in any of the discussions to date. He also made it clear that in his personal opinion there as nowhere within the Coventry boundary suitable at this present time. He confirmed that land changes status as decisions are made and Coventry does have a tight boundary.
The club will operate in Coventry for the next 4 years. He suggested that decisions are made on the use of the land and suggested that if a hotel were proposed on land close to the existing Stadium that may have a greater degree of success as the Council would see the revenue from the business rates generated.

Yes, it’s priceless isn’t it? I love the fact that he said this having walked into the meeting late and missed what Cllr. Maton had to say!

Too right. Feels like we are in jail and have been trying to throw a double for the last five fucking years.

"Is that Coventry City Council planning office?"

"Yes, how can I help?"

"I was wondering what the chances were of getting planning permission to build a combined slaughterhouse/incineration unit/radioactive disposal plant and lap dancing club in Coventry? Preferably near to a school and hospital?"

"Are you crazy? Absolutely no chance with any of those"

"It would have a hotel attached"

"Oh right, when do you think you could start building?".

I'm still trying to work out why you would come to Coventry to stay in a hotel. Surely it can only be for business. Why would you come here unless you've got family here? I love the place, but let's be honest. There's not a huge amount going on.

"Let's go to Coventry for the weekend" said nobody ever.

Can imagine it now:

Coventry Council Leader: Ladies and gentlemen of the press and tv stations, I'm pleased to welcome you to this historic unveiling. Paris has the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, New York the Statue of Liberty and The Empire State Building, Rome has The Colliseum, London St Pauls Cathedral, Westmister Abbey, and Nelsons column. No longer will Coventry live in the shadows of these cities. After years and years of planning and hard work we are finally able to show that we can take our place amongst the truly great cities in the World.

Stunned hush.

Council Leader pulls a cord and the canopy covering a large building shape falls to the ground revealing...

All: " Is that a Travellodge?".

I dunno Hill, there are coach loads of crumblies turning up outside the cathedral every day! Then there are the thousands visiting Coventry's ever growing student community, all the visiting university academic traffic, all those folk into civic history. Then theres the odd Ska enthusiast, lady Godiva obsessive and insect coloured rugby fans. There might even be someone wanting to watch the football!

But now they are doing so for rugby matches, which I don't think people should scoff at. You never know, maybe some of them will take in CCFC v Hartlepool while they're at it?

This . I work for a company who have an office in Walsgrave triangle. They pretty much have the Hol Inn booked out most days and nights for meetings and rooms for those working there who have travelled. Its only the weekend they dont use it.

SISU should apply to build their stadium in Broadgate. They could just demolish everything that is there now and call the new stadium SISUGate. The Council might go for it as they like destroying anything good in the City. An alternative would be to call the Stadium 'the Coventry University Stadium/Flats" and make the design include student flats which would provide rental income.

The Coventry economy is doing relatively well, so why are people surprised that hotels are need for business people?

Coventry people love slagging off their home without looking at the facts first.

I loved growing up in Coventry but I think I got lucky that my youth coincided with punk and an explosion of bands and activity. Remember going to see The Urge, Wild Boys, Clique, Squad, Vietnamese Babies - even played in a band myself and gigged around. Of course the Specials - saw them in Roots Hall for 30p. Really enjoyed the Rock Against Racism march through the centre following Squad playing on a truck.

But I get the impression it's nothing like that any more.

Now you get to pick up racist literature from National Action...

Back to the OP, i think the council have found a new friend and therefore we are left on our own now. This maybe beyond repair particualrly as both parties are saying there isnt any land within the boundaries. Lets face it if there is a will and all that.....

I think the redevelopment of town is going to help the city alot, the area around the station, catherdral 'Wilkos' Lane redevelopment will both be positive. The city has alot of history to be proud of but we need to sell it more. Personally i think it has more history that the likes of Brum for starters.

The groups that we have attracted to the Ricoh over the years has been great, godiva festival brings alot of people into the city etc.

I just hope our council do not sell the city down the river to Birmingham.

The way local government funding is going, joining up with Birmingham might be a necessity unfortunately. Though I wouldn't mind a Metro link.

Edit: joining up in an admin sense not in a suburb of Brum sense (over my dead body).
