Whilst i'm not unhappy with the the contribution of SC ,the fact that he goes off on iternational breaks ,and appears to be off in the summer ,i just wonder if we don't have a better candidate in Richard Keogh. His performances lately have been immense conjuring images in my mind of holton and killer, his determination to win the ball atany cost himself would suggest he's entirely bolted onto the SKY BLUE cause? Not very often do we lose Sammy for N.I games so I dont see any issue in him being captain. Changing captain after the season has started is always suicidal, so it wont happen even if fans didnt think SC was up to it.

I personally think he is our best option. I think a CM is always a good choice for captain as they can communication with all other positions where as if its a CB or Striker they cant always communicate enough to players at the other end of the pitch.

You dont want him to be Captain because he is an International?

I would have "experienced international player" high up my list of pre-requisites for a good Captain.

I was going to raise the same point...if you have an experienced player, who is also an international player, AND one of your better players, why would you not want him as your captain? And what does it matter what he does in the summer...during the OFF SEASON...as long as he is fit when he reports back with the rest of the squad?

I guess if you want to avoid the issues that were raised in the original post, then pick one of the players that won't get selected for his national team because he isn't good enough... lol

Saying he'll be off in the summer is pure speculation, however likely it is and, for all you know, so might Richard Keogh if the right offer comes in...
I can't think of a better choice than Sammy at the moment. An experienced, intelligent player who can read a game very well and has international matches under his belt.

The choice of captain is never an easy one. Is midfield a best position to have the captain? He can communicate with the team easier as he is closer to everyone. A defender can see all the players at the same time easier though. To me the captain does not have to be the best player in the side, but respect from the other players is a must. To me the main points are:-

Respect from the other players
Experienced
Good organiser
Not afraid to tell players what they need to hear without going over the top
Always gives full effort

Is he going in the next transfer window? Does he even know this himself? Will he want to leave at the end of the season? I would say if he is the best player to be captain and gives full effort for the cause every game there is no reason to have a change of captaincy. If we have a better season like it looks we could then why would he want to leave other than for a bigger club and more money?

if you justified your reasoning to say that he seemed very quiet vocally on the pitch i may have to agree with you, but to jusify your reasoning by questioning his professionalism is lucrid.

But if he wasnt captain or not here next season yes fine, Keogh would be my number 1 candidate.

Anyone else think Bigi could be our captain in a few years? I think "bleeds sky blue" should be on the list of requirements.

Is this a serious thread??? not have sammy as capt as he is an international and he is leaving?? surely a player who is a international brings the experience you need as captain and when did he say he was leaving??? as for bigi as captain in future your talking probably 8-10 years away if he is still here then !!!

At no point have i questioned his proffessionalism, abilty ,one or two have have missread the offin the summer remark ,however AStUTE i agree with most of that assesment apart from the fact it seems evident he will follow the other three percieved big players away from here ,having not signed yet, sisu will feel the need to cash in ,SHMMEEE i agree BIGI falls into the catagory, but i fear higher council than us or him may prevent us finding out:thinking about:

If you wouldn't select a captain based on the possibility that they may leave the club before too long, logically there isn't really anyone you would give the armband to.

You hit the nail on the head yourself. It seems he will be going. Nothing has been said though. Are we to pick our team on what might happen? To me it seems our club is half run on what things seem and also rumours. Not good for the players and not good for the fans.

THe response that he plays international football and is a quality player is all absolutely correct ,and he's Andy's choice should be enough for anyone ,the point of the OP is to create a debate ,we're all on here thinking of ways to better our club, its gone a bit thin on here now the overranted SISU stuff has been shifted ,so yes the thread is a serious one,no ones said why Keogh should'nt wear the armband ,just that Sammy's an international ,which does'nt automatically make you a leader , keoghs performances are behind the question ,otherwise we,re left with whats on the back of the telegraph ,whats the point of a forum if you dont express yoursef, whether your agreed with or not .

Keogh shouldn't be captain because Clingan is, basically. There's no reason to change captain.

Keogh is a good shout for captain except for 2 reasons:
1] We have a better one already.
2] Despite a good start to the season Keogh is not an automatic pick like Sammy is as there is far more competition for his place at centre half. A dip in form or an injury could see him replaced and unable to get back in the side for a while. The same cannot be said of Sammy who is Thorn's first name on the teamsheet & rightly so IMHO.

Good choice as far as im concerned, espceially as he pens a new contract after leading us on an unbeaten run in 2012 that leads to our automatic promotion.

I'm happy with Sammy as our captin
Think RK would do a very good job too but don't see the need for a change.

Can't see anything wrong with Sammy. Has more experience than Keogh, who is still developing his own game (and at a fairly rapid rate at that). No reason to worry about who's here next year-you pick your captain in pre-season. Westwood was given the armband when everyone knew he was goin, and Sammy is too much of a pro to be distracted by contract negotiations.

Seeing as he's on a long-term contract McPake could be a good choice if/after Keogh/Sammy leave. Presuming he can stay fit, there has to be a good chance he'll get a run in the side at some point in that contract. When fit (and I'm not saying he has been often!), he's the most natural leader we have.

are we happy with the captaincy?

exactly n/l/h/w/c, ideally the captaincy should be with the person who has commited themselves to CCFC for the longest period of time,
however, how good or real is a contract these days ?
and once 'the agents' get their action, how does that affect the situation ?
for my part, the 'true sky blues' should be the candidates, SC should have had a good contract offer, has he ? we don't know,
can anyone seriously believe what s*** trot out,
CCFC fans crave honest & meaningful communications,

I dont think being captain means half as it used to years ago! Id say its just picking heads or tails and havin photos with sponsors after the games are probably the most they do now! Football is much more professional now, players look after themselves more get motivated from money more then another team mate.

The captaincy is still important if you have a good captain. Not all players look after thenselves as they should. Hello Freddie.
