Watford away 5-2 loss in one of our first seasons down, we had Steve Walsh at the back, I think he had been playing for Tamworth before that, and people say we lack quality now! Also, 4-0 away at Burnley, hammered down with rain, we got absolutely tonked, Burnley is like the place that time forgot, even the motorway to it was empty. Charlton away was massively dissapointing, even worse that we got the train from Warwick Parkway and it was rammed full of WBA fans celebrating promotion. I could go on for ages but it will just get too depressing :)

Oh yeah, and then the station we changed at in London their former player, Andy Johnson, was there. He just went down with the fans to watch the game! Baggies fan with 3 teeth started on me in the train as well because I touched his table trying to keep upright (no, that is not a metaphor for his penis by the way)!!

Ooh, good thread. Loads.

Being at West Brom at the end of the seventies wearing our Choccy brown kit and getting hammered 7-1. I was only about twelve and I cried for a week!

Old Trafford 1982. A police accused me of hitting someone (my mate!). He realised after a while it was bollocks, but it felt touch and go for a while. Also, some of you might remember, it used to "rain coins" there as some of the home fans were seated above us.

Victoria Ground, Stoke City, Full Members Cup, 1985. There were 16 of us in the away end. I went with me mate so who were the other 14?

The Dell, Southampton. Can't remember what year, but it was the day Gary Bannister made his second debut after re-signing. They shoved us into a corner and the pitch was at chest level so all you could see were legs. I was also there when we lost 8-2.

Filbert Street, Leicester, Xmas 1984(?). We lost 5-1. Bobby Gould was running on the pitch. Afterwards, even though we could see our car about twenty yards away from us, the police wouldn't let us go through them to get to it. We had to walk all the way round the ground through leicester fans to get to it.

Anfield, Liverpool 1986. League Cup (I think). We lost with a hatrick of penalties from Jan Molby.

Hillsborough, Sheffield, 1987. Semi-final against Leeds. We were one-nil down and I'd never felt so ill at a football match. We'd come so far only to lose when were so close. That all changed when Gynny scored though. Also, the terraces were really steep and I had vertigo.

Wembley, Cup Final, 1987. Being one-nil down in under a minute. The guy stood next to me (who I'd never seen before or since) said "they're going to get ten". I thought he was probably going to be right.

Sutton Utd, 1988. Say no more

Scarborough, League Cup, 1991(?). Travelled a long way only to lose. Rubbish.

What ever happened to orange balls? I remember them using them loads of times at HR as it always seemed to be foggy or snowing.

Remember that fog, didn't some lad from a minibus stop for a piss and ending up going over the thelwall viaduct.

Newcastle away in the fa cup lost 2-0 think andy cole scored wegerlie got injured or sent off stood on my own at the back of the old gallowgate end as there was a big fence splitting it in two. My mates on one side me the other a very cold wind blowing down the back of my neck. And to top it off had the worst coach of the lot and there was a good few of them. Very long journey home feeling glum on a banger of a coach. anyone else there from here as there were thousends of us hence two sides of the fence.Think there was a lot of balloons aswell.

SBS, this was my worst one as well, a terrible day, cold and wet on the open terracing, we played shite, werent in the game, a god awful journey, and even Killer didnt wave to us when he warmed up on the touchline for Newcastle.

Reading away simod cup.two of us stood on the home terracing behind the goal. When Speedie scored we nearly leapt about but thought better of it,gutted to lose that one and be amongst the home fans as well.
Cambridge Utd in FA cup,we missed a penalty to level it,lost 1-0 in freezing conditions and got shoved about and spat on by a group of Cambridge lads.just before we got back to the car my old man spotted the lad who spat at us on his own and said "where's your mates now then?"before lumping him one .

Sorry Torchy I got confused, when you said whatever happened to Orange balls I wondered what had happened to Ken Dulieu, and then I realised you were actually talking about footballs ;)

Andy king got me and my dad tickets for the Everton away game in 1978 when we were riding high in the old first division. Really looking forward to the match I told Andy not to play too well as it was my beloved Sky Blues he was playing against. Had to sit through 90 minutes of torture (in the Everton main stand) while we were beaten 6-0 with King getting on the scoresheet. The crazy thing was we actually played quite well and everthing Everton hit went in.

I recall a visit to Stoke at Christmas 2004, Saturday 11th December to be precise. We went as guests of a work mate of my dad's who got us tickets in the executive area (would have preferred to be in with our own fans, but as this was done through dad's work, it was out of our hands).

I remember the ticket included access to their executive lounge, with full compliments of drink and 3 course Christmas dinner. Now that should have been an great day out. Sadly, it was something of a nightmare. The day itself was bitterly cold. Not the only thing stone cold,as it turned out. The dinner was also. The spuds on the Christmas dinner were rock hard. The meat hardly cooked, the soup had what appeared to be little bits of something disgusting in it. And the match wasn't much to enjoy either. We bloody well went and lost 1-0! We played absolutely horrendously I recall, created virtually nothing all game, and when we finally did get the ball in the net, it was offside anyway. It was one of the dullest matches I've ever witnessed in my life, I seem to recall!

Both me and the old man unanimously agreed that, all things considered, if we did it again we'd be in the away end with our own fans. By my reckoning, even the pies, pasties and burgers you can get at football grounds had to be better than the codswallop we got served that day! No idea who the chef was at the Britannia stadium back then, but they either weren't very good, or severely understaffed. Absolute nightmare! :(

Talking of being cold at games has reminded me of a game at Grimsby about 10 years ago. Was an xmas game. Grimsby's ground is said to be the coldest ground in England. For this reason I got tickets in with the home fans in the stand which covered us from the wind coming off the north sea. We were all over them, but hardly got a shot on target. If I remember right Lee hughes scored for us. Think he also got sent off. I had family and friends looking for me. They saw me when we scored though. I was the only idiot jumping up and down in the stand we were in. After I sat down I got a tap on my shoulder. I thought "here we go" It was an oldish lady. She said they were all from Cov, but were too scared to celebrate :D When I met up with family they told me it was the coldest they had ever been at a game by far. Anyone remember this one?

This shows how quickly things can go wrong for a team. Grimsby have been a non league team for a few years now.

worst game

colchester in the cup on a tuesday night when we lost 3-0.
nightmare of a journey along the m25 during rush hour. finally arrived and it must have been one of the worst performances i’ve seen (i’m 32) funny sight was seeing my mate got told to fu*k off by staunton after he had a pop at him. on the way back, the motor we were in broke down. finally got home at 3 and was in work for 7.
scariest experience

millwall away in 2002.

about 12 of us got the tube from london bridge and the tube was packed with millwall fans who were very rowdy. luckily for us we didn’t have any cov shirts on so we kept quiet, as we walked off the tube the police copper from cov recognised one of my mates and approached us, then this caught the attention of the millwall lot who turned onto us, more police came over and we got escorted to the ground. after the game we got kept in for what seemed an eternity. we could hear sirens going off, fireworks. as we were escorted to the tube station, we had bottles, fireworks aimed at us. poice on horses charged the millwall fans which seemed 100’s. we got onto the tube and same again, loud millwall fans and us lot. was glad to get backl to leicester square.
cardiff away in the cup.

same again, 15 of us went on the train. we got escorted to the ground at 1pm. after the game we came out and were ambushed by cardiff fans, coins and stones thrown at us, they were even spitting at us, the horrible tramps. we were penned in for ten mins, we were escorted back to the station and were been kicked and hit by the welsh police and called english scum.

I'll never forget going to vile park expecting to see the greatest ever escape... didn't quite work out like that did it! Being brought up with great escapes is a big fall to take when it doesn't happen.

Also remember going to a terrible game at pne, made worse by the fact I went with a uni mate who was a pne fan.

A couple spring to mind! my very first away game was about 93-94 Newcastle away! It was early in the season and was a midweek game! ive got family in the area and was staying up there for a week or so, so me and the old fella got tickets for the game....... We got thumped 4-0! Walking around Newcastle as an 11 year old in a sky blue shirt for the rest of that week wasnt the best idea :facepalm:

However my worst away day has got to be Leicester, Jan 08! The previous weekend we'd been to Blackburn in the cup and thumped them 4-1! (misfud got a couple)
So the following saturday we were all up for the short trip to the wank bowl, we must of took 3000 and were rocking the place!!........ We were simlpy awful! Lost 2-0 to a very poor leicester side, two of the sloppiest goals you'll see! I think that was the beginning of he end for Dowie. They went down that season... You all know the rest!!!

Been quite a few shit ones, the last one I could think of was when we got smashed by Crewe, the game where Adams took Shaw off after about 30 mins and it made no difference.

So many poor games though, it has to be said.

Charlton had the potential to be the worst, but I was dressed up, pissed up, and we stayed up.

On a serious note, reading through these great posts i guess you'd have to say we've all been extremely lucky ,when you consider what happened to those poor Sheffield wednesday fans on the M69 2or three years back ,same goes for the Welsh lad @ wembley recently

I have to agree. When I was younger trouble was part of the matchday experience. Something seemed to be missing them days if nothing went wrong. Doing all them miles in motors that took a mile to stop in an emergency and were not reliable like now. You more or less know now that most away games will be uneventful. Now I am older and wiser I am glad things have changed. Wouldn't change any of the experiences other than getting relegated though.

Losing 3-0 away to the inbreds in 2007. Adams had been sacked and Adrian Heath was caretaker manager - even his face was uninspiring.

I couldn't really say any away day in the 90s was more upsetting because at least we were in the Prem. Our team was woeful in 2007.

If I'd have been old enough to go I probably would have said losing to Sheffield Utd in the cup quarters in 97. I was convinced we'd at least get to the final that year. Heartbreaking stuff!

Went to a lot of away games without seeing us win or even score !

3 - 0 at Arsenal, 3 -0 at Leeds etc etc.

Luckily I wasn't at The Hawthorns for the 7 - 1 or Southampton for the 8 - 2.

West Ham in the 2nd round of the League Cup semi final is mine. A goal up after the first leg after a stirring fight back in the last ten minutes. Massive Cov support (10,000) only for them to snatch the winner with virtually the last kick. That's happened too often hasn't it !

Kept in the ground for about half an hour and when we left, me and two mates to walk to the car the coppers said we were on our own. Had a very eerie walk through what seemed to be deserted East London expecting an attack at any second. Turned out they were all down where our coaches were smashing them up so we didn't get any hassle but the expectation was almost as bad.

Saw some nasty sights away at St Andrews in the late 70s. One bloke got a severe kicking on the Tilton End and although it was Cov blokes doing the kicking I remember feeling sickened by it.

Agree away games have best atmosphere and crack. Best ever, well that's United away in the cup a few years ago in Mifsud's heyday. 11,000 of us taking the piss at Old Trafford.

Sutton United - lost 2-1 and nearly got trampled by a horse in the process. Also fondly remember an away day in Brum when we turned up late in New Street and got chased by the Brum crew (I think they were called the Zulus?) - can't remember the score just the terror as we were a very small group of about 6 (all in SB shirts) were chased by a very vociferous number of ardent Birmingham City fans - oh the fun we had in the 80's ;-)

So many.
Oxford in the days of maxwell and the rip off prices to get in there, 2 of the lads got arrested for going to the toilet at the same time (they thought they were gay:eek:) and they were the drivers so we had to get a lift of anyone we could to get back to cov.

Man city when we come out past there main stand and a group of about 30 decided to start following us for some trouble, just like fin coronation street little alliy ways between houses, the car had broken down about a mile away so had to try and find it again, never been so glad to see some coppers although the b******s wern't very happy to see us.

Wimbeldon at selhurst (hardest ground ever to find) park on a cold wet tuesday night, we went in the wrong end at had to be escorted around the pitch while having things thrown at us, spat at etc, and you think the stewards are bad now (fuckers never done nothing think they enjoyed escorting us around the ground).

Trying to get to selhurst park again but went on the piss instead.

Barnsley went the night before and some local let us all crash at his house the nutter ran out of beer so he went and broke into the off license.

Thumbing a lift to man utd on a friday night some bloke picked us up just as we got to M6 longford junction and he took us to manchester and put us up for the night (don't know how we ever expected to hitch hike down the M6 without being nicked or run over)
Just so many, don't remember much about the games as usual to drunk to remember.

Must have been mad but good days and good laughs.

I was going to start a new Thread, Best ever Home day, but i could'nt be bothered.
My worst home day was when i was about 10/11ish and me and my dad had season tickets, but we never ever once used our actual seats as my dad ,who was a cantankerous old bugger, always sat us in the press seats in the main stand so we had a table for the fish and chips he had smuggled in.
Anyway my best mate supported Leeds and when we played them at home we took him as he had never seen them live. Yet again sat in the press seats my dad, who could fall out with himself, started to bad mouth 3 Leeds fans who were sat a fews rows infront of us. It soon got very heated and my bloody Dad got up and went straight up to them and started this almighty brawl. This started to make me cry loudly and my mate could'nt beleive it and was totally bemused.
This brawl went on for some time which made every person in the main stand stop watching the game to look over to us , until the stewards finally dragged him away and made him come back and sit back next to us. By now i had become hysterical and my mate also had started to cry, with people around us trying to comfort us, but my Dad just could'nt understand why we had become so upset. I had never been so embarrassed, and my mate still dumbstruck just wanted to go home, but my Dad insisted we stay and enjoy the game, but the day was ruined for both of us.
We drove home in silence, and when i got home i took my revenge by telling my mum all what had happened, which i knew would hit him the hardest. For some time probably weeks,he had to cook all his own meals and all his clothes washing and ironing, until my mum had cooled down.
