The 51-year old will be in the stands when City take on Barnsley at Oakwell tomorrow night as the Sky Blues look for back-to-back wins...
Coventry City have appointed Tony Mowbray as their new manager.

Mowbray joins the Sky Blues until the end of the current season and will be in the stands when City take on Barnsley at Oakwell tonight.

The 51-year old enjoyed a successful playing career with spells at Middlesbrough, Celtic and Ipswich Town before moving into management with Scottish side Hibernian in 2004.

His success with Hibs attracted the attention of West Bromwich Albion in 2006 and Mowbray guided the Black Country side to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League in the 2007/08 season.

After a brief spell with Celtic, Mowbray moved back to Middlesbrough to guide Boro to safety in the 2010/11 season before narrowly missing out on a play-off place a season later during a three-year spell.

Chief Executive Steve Waggott said: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome Tony Mowbray to Coventry City as our new manager.

"We've secured the services of a highly-rated, experienced candidate for the job and Tony is a manager who has enjoyed plenty of success at a higher level.

"He has experience in coming into a club in challenging times and steering them through to safety and, on top of that, has enjoyed promotion too.

"We were all very impressed with Tony during the interview process and it speaks volumes that the club are able to attract a manager of Tony's calibre.

"We wanted someone who could come in and hit the ground running because we have 14 important games left in this season and the number one priority is to preserve our League One status.

“We have agreed terms until the end of the season and then, immediately after the final ball is kicked, we can reassess and look at a longer term deal. It was just vital, at this stage, to get the right man in to help steer us through the current situation between now and the end of the season.

"We believe Tony is exactly the right man for Coventry City and everyone here, from supporters to staff, will get right behind him."

Neil MacFarlane and Dave Hockaday will be in charge for the game tonight.

A bit worrying he has only signed until the end of the season, probably wants to see if he likes it or not?

Mowbray joins the Sky Blues until the end of the current season

Which one of these applies:

he's here with the job of keeping us up and they've agreed an extension if he does
someone else is lined up but can't come in until the end of the season
SISU are off in the summer
SISU don't have a clue what they are doing

I go with number one. The shouty lot will go with number four.

Happy with the appointment myself, he gets an opportunity to prove himself and whether he is a right fit for the club. Good appointment in my opinion.

SISU are leaving it all for the new owners to sort out, that's why we have only 11 contracted players for next season, they're near enough all academy players anyway.

Seems legit.

I would suspect this is a clause by Mowbray - if we do get relegated it gives him a get out of jail option - if not he can then sit down and thrash out a longer deal on his terms.

Whatever people say his pedigree is pretty high for a club like us.

If true to me this is a bit of a downer, but what do you expect from this clown Waggot. Does it nudge us that sisu could be off at the end of the season and perhaps Mowbray insisted on a short term deal to see what happens. Having said that I don't think our fans will like it to be honest.

think this is about right

if he keeps us up he can renegotiate for himself and team budget

Or it could have been him that wanted the short term contract.

If I were him I would want to see what our owners intentions are once our status is secured (or not). Smart move by him. Come the summer he can ask for clarity on funds.

the more you think about it the more it makes sense from Mowbray's standpoint

if he keeps us up (which im sure he will) it puts him in a strong position

Now that I have got over the initial raised eyebrow of surprise, it would appear to make some kind of sense for all parties concerned. He must see something in the Club to come in the first place, and SW approached him. Keep us up and we will all take it from there.

Gee, looks like we might really need that butt plug. Something's afoot (I know 12 inches). Check the lifeboats, come summer. Women and children first.

I'm not sure a short term deal is very good - on one hand it does give both parties a chance to assess the situation, but on the other it does suggest that one side or the other is not absolutely sure that he is the right man for the job. The trouble with such a short term contract if there are any players not up for the fight and Mowbray pulls them up on it they may think 'fuck it he's probably gone in the summer I'm still not going to bother'.

Haven't you heard? We only do short term deals. Go ask the players.

Can't win 4yrs wrong and so is 14 games according to many on hear, just don't get it!

Great work by the owners and Steve Waggott and a sensible decision to review the situation at the end of the season.

Very Best of Luck Tony, let's hope ALL supporters unite and get behind you, your staff & the players! PUSB

I have to say that City never fail to surprise me. They say that Mowbray is 'exactly the right man for Coventry City' and then effectively appoint him as a caretaker for two months. That shows little faith in him to turn the club around. Or does Mowbray have little faith in the club's prospects of survival and he doesn't fancy managing in Division 4?

We thought we had a decent manager to get us back on track, yet this turns out to be potentially no more than a Don Howe/Adrian Heath appointment. Maybe not quote a loan manager, more of a supply manager.

Not everything has to be one extreme or the other but I don't expect you to understand that.

I suspect talks will continue with a longer term deal but for now he has to first save us from relegation. If he fails he walks easily with no scars on his reputation. If we do OK then the serious stuff starts on a deal. Let's be honest I did wonder how we got him so quickly. It will be up to SISU to back him in the summer and see that is the way to go. Unless TM says he is only here temporary then I see him staying.

Makes sense.

You forgot about the 5 point plan and long term aspirations though, or have you just swept them under the rug for now?
