Coventry City FC chairman Tim Fisher has confirmed the club would pay rent in any new stadium built by owners Sisu.
The confirmation came as Mr Fisher responded to questions from the Telegraph about how any new stadium could be financed.
Sky Blues owners Sisu have long stated their desire to build a new home in the “Coventry area” in order to enable the club to access revenue not available at the Ricoh Arena.
The Ricoh is currently operated by Premiership rugby side Wasps and the Sky Blues only receive a share of the business’s income which is limited to matchdays alone and covers 50 per cent of food and beverage sales, a share of car parking revenue and ticket sales.
Club bosses insist they must own their own ground in order to generate money all year round and become self-sustainable. It could also allow the club to be more competitive in light of strict Football League and Premier League rules which restrict how much clubs can spend on player wages based on income.
But many supporters remain sceptical about the idea and have questioned how a football club which suffered a £6.87million operating loss in its latest set of accounts could afford a new stadium.
[h=3][/h] Mr Fisher said any new stadium build would likely take place under a structure known as a “propco-opco” arrangement.
In simple terms that would involve setting up a property company to raise funds and build the stadium, while a separate stadium operating company – the football club in this instance – would operate the venue and benefit from all the revenues generated at the stadium.
However, there would also be a commitment from the operating company to enter into a rental agreement with the property company to allow the club to receive all stadium revenues, both matchday and non-matchday.
That would allow any debts accrued by the property company – such as those acquired in the construction of the stadium – to be kept separate from the operating company.
Mr Fisher said: “The capital cost would be met by a separate company, a property company.
“That’s the norm throughout football whenever projects like this are undertaken.
“The absolutely crucial thing here is that the football club would benefit from all matchday and non-matchday revenues generated at the stadium.
“Under the rules that now govern football – either financial fair play or salary cost management protocol – that allows us to get the best possible team on the pitch.”
Mr Fisher pointed towards Brentford, MK Dons and Scunthorpe as to what could be achieved under the plans.
Brentford’s plans also include 910 new homes and a hotel – and Mr Fisher claimed residential building could play a big role in any project undertaken for the Sky Blues.
Club officials have insisted talks have taken place with at least two councils over their plans for a new stadium – but every local authority in Coventry and Warwickshire has repeatedly denied those claims.

For me, the club will be dead if they move away from the Ricoh.

They have the golden share. They haven't got the fans behind them though. This is a long death.

We dont own anything at the minute, they have just "written off" £61M and the clown talks about a new stadium! If a new business park with much needed jobs has been turned down at Coventry airport what chance have we of a new stadium?
Fisher needs to shut the fuck up and keep away. A constant prick who just serves to muddy the waters.:jerkit:

Think we have always known we would just pay rent to someone else haven't we?

I too still think the Ricoh is the answer. There has to be a deal to be done there, surely. Especially if we cannot finance a new stadium or even find a location for it..

And if Wasps are not in trouble, why the hell would they do a deal?

If we stay at the Ricoh we will never have a future.

Maybe buy the Ricoh off Wasps? They had their stab at this though? Crooks. Totally wrong approach to getting ownership of that stadium. They used the method of the Lion rather than that of the Fox.

When the deal next comes up for renewal and we have nothing else lined up we will be ripped off to the hilt, particularly if Wasps/Moonshine aren't doing too well.

Oh, this old chestnut again, eh? Yes, I will carry on supporting the club I love. Nothing apparently about it.

No it's called being a realist. Big difference you carry on supporting our god awful owners and apparently the club you love die and fall even further

Why will it?
Fisher claims the football club need a stadium that generates money 365 days a year. So he will need one that has conference halls, a stadium that can be used for "Pop Concerts" with minmum 32k capacity, maybe even a casino and built in hotel and shopping complex right on the doorstep. All this for about £20m........Good luck with that one Fisher.....Hold on a sec....I've seen one exactly matching that description, that was going for mere buttons not so long ago...If only I could remember where I saw it??

Good sensible post (just for a change on this site!).

They can and will make it happen, at least that's what I believe.

Every time this prick opens his big fat gob it makes my blood boil. Everytime that gob opens he causes harm

If he had done his job properly and kept his gob shut he wouldn't have pissed off every fucker from the council and Higgs, and just as importantly the fans, the company he works for only asset.

He could have position the club by building relationships with them to be in a place to buy the Ricoh for what Wasps paid for it, if not cheaper.

The way he has treated the fans with his patronising bullshit has caused irreparable damage to what any relationship was there between the owners and supporters.

Sisu need to get this clown away from the club asap, if they have any wish to try and rebuild something with the fans.

He is an absolute hate figure

I'm not against a new stadium, on the contrary.

They have a spot of reassuring to do mind you and, you'd have to admit, they haven't been overly adept at that!

TBF to you, if that's what you believe then people should accept. For the record I'd love us to have our own stadium. Not sure it'll happen with SISU. However, I do think future owners would also come to the same conclusion rather than being hamstrung at the Ricoh.

True but seemingly Coventry City will never own the Ricoh, how is staying as underlings to Wasps going to be good for us?

I'm a customer along with thousands of others who focus & concentrate on giving our support to the manager & team and not be constantly side-tracked by a crazy obsession regarding our owners (whoever that's been in the past, or for that matter in the future!).

I wonder how much rent....Management fees....interest charges......CCFC would have to pay SISU/Otium per year?.......Rent £1.3m?....Management fees £3m?...Interest charges £1.8m?.....Now I see why they want to build their own stadium......Before anyone slags off my figures, I, nor you, know what they would be. Nothing stopping them charging that much though, is there?...After all, those figures have been quoted before.
